  • Bought this long abandoned barn find 1989 Yamaha Moto 4 250 a few weeks ago. In this video, the Mikuni carburetor will be replaced with a flange and throttle cap modified $20 keihin PZ30 clone. A spare battery was also cobbled in to the holder and wired up. At this point, this ATV self contained starts with an IV gas tank. During the first ride and mild romp, I found this 4 wheeler a pleasure to ride. The suspension was comfortable, it had plenty of power, and the 5 speed transmission functioned as it should. The reverse lockout needs some adjustment.

      Hey Steve, I expected it to be a utility quad, kind of like driving a stuffed potato, I was pleasantly surprised, it is a nice machine all around, enough power, maneuvers easy, tight turning radius...I like it!! Thanks for Ur thoughts, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

    Spend an hour wet sanding and buffing those plastics and paint the racks, and that thing will be brand new. Love the old yammies.

      Hey Refuge! The Moto4 just hit the next stage of its development, it is known as the $ stage.... It needs an air cleaner, fuel line, filter, and valve, 4 tires, plastic clean up, seat repair, brake work, and rack clean up and paint... But, it is well worth the time, $, and effort, it is a well build machine that can be brought back to like new.... Thanks for Ur thoughts, suggestions, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

      Hey Sacred Cymatics!!! I love it when an ATV comes back to life and I figured out how to do that on the cheap.... For this machine, $ time has come! It needs tires, battery, air clean, fuel valve, line, and filter....But, once that is all done, it should be a like new quad!!! I love old quads ATCs dirt bikes in the late 70s early 80s / stand up jetskis and street bikes like my 1980 and 1981
      Honda CB750F and older boats like the Glastron late 70s /early 80s.
      Also jet boats that can shoot roaster tails with those loud engines that I used to wake up to as my alarm clock when I was a kid at the river even if we stayed in a hotel with my mom dad brother and sister and our parents friends and their kids.
      Man I miss my mom and dad

    If reverse isn't locking right in something isn't quite right with the linkage or the idle speed is still a hair high. I like it very much! It's weight, stability, and gearing make it a great farm machine. It can still handle the trails fine as well. They are great machines. Looks like yours is in really nice shape. I'm also reviving a red one and it's transformation has been incredible. I hand sanded out all the plastics and polished them back to a nice shine.

      Hey Fan!!! When I got this machine, my first impression was heavy and with the 250, it would be under powered and hard to maneuver. My first ride shut that down, it has plenty of power, it steers easy, and the turning radius is tight.... I like the machine a lot.... I think the idle is slightly high and the linkage needs some lube.... Given that U R working on one, U must like this project.... I just hit the $ stage though, time for a battery, fuel valve, line, filter, also needs an air filter, a seat cover, and to make it right, 4 tires.... I will have to hold on the tires, need to save some $ for them... Thanks for the info, advice, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

    Love the Moto 4's.... just pulled the head and jug off my 86 because it smoked worse than ten freight trains put together...it ran well with power like new... everything looks perfect... cylinder wall, piston, rings, valves, valve stem seals.... scratching my head as to why it smokes and drips oil out the tailpipe worse than any other atv on the planet.

      Hey Dave! It is a heavy quad, does not seem to heavy, it has a pretty wide foot print, the front wheels and drum brakes are low and heavy, and the shaft drive rear end and frame are low and heavy.... Is Ur Honda a gold wing? My friend had one with over 100K on it, he always said that it ran like new even after all those miles.... Enjoy Ur trip, U will probably be coming back to a polaris carb rebuild video, maybe a first ride.... Thanks for the info, Ur thoughts and encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

    Im in need of your a pinion. This guy has a 2006 yamaha grizzly 660 that has been sitting somewhat under a car port tin top. The plastics is a little sun baked, and it has 200 miles on it. The guy said he paid 12,000 for it brand new and wants 10,000 for it now. I searched up the selling price for them in 06 and it was around 7,000. He bought it from a yamaha dealer, so do u think he wouldve actually paid 12,000. Cause for 10,000 i could buy a 2021 quad for way less then 10k. So what do u think about the situation Harvey?

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  3 роки тому +1

      Hey M610, U R named after my most common nut and bolt!!! In my opinion $10k is crazy $. He is asking a lot of $ for a 16year old atv with baked plastic, old tires, dry seals etc! Have U ridden a grizzly 660? I found it to be a heavy, heavy handling machine, given its power and it has plenty of power, I found it sluggish, hard to maneuver, long braking distances.... I don't know where U live, where U plan to ride, how big U R, and what U want to use the machine for, but, if I had $10K to spend, a used Grizzly would not be my first choice. I paid $1000 for mine, got it running, (they like to eat pulse generators), rode it for 30minutes, parked it out back and have not touched it since.... I keep it because it would make a great plow atv or something to pull logs... BTW, once again, I'm not sure where U live, but, generally speaking, I don't like water cooled machines, belt drives, 2 cycles, or hand clutches when riding tight trails or doing yard work, for me simple is better.... Good luck with Ur decision.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting

      @@HarveySpooner I have been looking at some other 660's, but there been around 3k to 2k. I was thinking the same with him asking 10k that this is a crazy amount. He has this old Polaris ranger so I was thinking he might have been thinking what he paid for it and not the quad. I was looking for it to be cheaper so I could put a little work in it and get a old quad back running. He said in the past probably 2years ago that he got it all tuned up and running about 4 times in the past, but is so busy working he let a lot of stuff just sit. He didn't tell me tho how long it has been sitting. And he needs to understand that the value of stuff goes down for a older quad that's been sitting. I live in Alabama by the way, and I wanted a quad like this for work and some riding.
      Thanks for the info Harvey

      I've bought and sold over 100 machines in the last 10 years. I looked up what they sold for new and if thats any indication of someones honesty, never mind the details, run. Now as for the details, Harvey is familiar with the 600 grizzly, not the 660, I've met Harvey so I'll explain my answer to him also. 4 to 5 grand in amazing condition with perfect plastics and current paperwork would be more then I would pay but thats what the market would stand today. Just my opinion but now is the worst time to buy atv's, if you can't wait, make due with a 2 wheel drive until the market crashes, sell it and put your money into something nice, at a reasonable cost. Good luck.

      @@atvseatexchange2176 Well this is a older guy that has the quad and don't ride it any more, and said he bout it for 12k and wanted 10k for it to get some money back, but he needs to understand that the value went down on it cause it's been sitting so long and don't run. I was hoping it would be a cheap quad that been sitting so I could put a little work into and get going but unfortunately not. But, thanks for your advice on this situation.
