Everybody's standards are different as well as expectations when it comes to sound. I'm sure everyone in that gym heard the music and was able to dance to it on the EKX system. Although they did not "feel" the music as if you would have used an ETX system, they still enjoyed themselves. I believe that knowing your system's capabilities and how to place your speakers in a room is extremely important. In this case I would have placed both subs together side by side to get more bass out on the dancefloor. Every mobile DJ chooses equipment that will reflect their brand and budget. Some DJ's swear by JBL, some by Yorkville or EV or RCF etc... In my case, I currently use and ETX system (2x ETX-35P, 2x ETX-15P & 4x ETX-18SP Subs) and I am still looking to upgrade to the next level (Bassboss). I noticed that the more I spend on getting better sound and lights, the more higher-paying events/gigs I attract and get booked for. Brian I appreciate all of your videos. Keep up the good work!!!
Generally we try to use a passive system with a Rack mount power distribution system. I'm very happy to hear that the Active EV's can manage equal sound to a passive system. I personally use EV's ELX (up to 300). I'm very happy with the EV Quality just as you were. Good video
I appreciate any information I can get. As I am getting back into the DJ world after being gone for 30 years, I find your videos very informative. Of course, one should always hear what is being said and work with it. Make adjustments here and there until you are satisfied with your own results. Keep 'em coming!
@@Fizyxx I was a DJ in college with a degree in radio/television. Couldn't find a job to pay my bills, so I went to a factory job. Just retired at 55; now I want to do what I always wanted. And I'm having fun doing it too. Best part is I don't have to worry any more about the financial side. Have a great day!
Thanks for the video. Nice to see the angled set up to increase the distance the sound has to go before returning to you. If they wanted it louder they could have you plug it through the house PA system....
That is too bad that you feel you would be thought of as creepy for taking pictures. They hired you because they think you are a professional. What would make them think you are creepy for taking pictures of your system or people enjoying your professional show and people having a good time. I do it all the time at my events. I can show other potential clients what I have done. Showing your setup and how people enjoyed your music is not creepy. Keep on doing what you love. I've been djing since 1976. A lot has changed but the love of music and seeing people having fun on the dance floor will never change. Keep up the good work. Much Love and respect DJ Magic Touch Louie
To all the people out there that thinks a sound system needs to have your ears bleeding!!! That is the problem with a lot of you! I do school dances all the time! But not everyone wants the dance so loud your ears ring for a week!!! I did a large middle school. Bigger than my usual ones. So I figured I better take in my big ridge. I had a teacher come up yelling at me "Turn this down" its way to loud! So the next time I came in with my much smaller system & they have been pleased ever since. Going on my 4th year doing all there school dances!!! So I'm not sure why everyone thinks it needs to be super loud! I go to some clubs & see some DJs with there systems so loud people are horse at the end of the night from yelling to each other! Music does not need to be super freaking loud!!!
I own a pair of ETX 15P's and your right, they are heavy. And you are correct in that they can get loud. I do find most of the time, I can get away without using subs with ETX's. But at the end of the day, I'd rather run two EV 12's and a sub. But if the pay is right and the crowd is huge and noisy, I'll bring the ETX's.
I had a larger system with 15" tops and huge 18" horn subs, housed in a trailer. I took it out twice a year. My wedding setup has one sub and smaller tops, fits in the truck, and I use it 25-30 times a year. I sold the bigger setup and the trailer, since I couldn't justify keeping it for 2 gigs a year.
Just watched this old post, you are right about video'ing or taking pictures at a under 18 event. Those djs who post quinceanera videos, school dances or sweet 16's are creepy. The under 18 video vlogs I post are short and sweet and primarily feature adults. But then again I avoid under 18 gigs like the plague.
In Hydraulics liquid/oil is used to transmit power, whereas in pneumatic compressed gas (generally air) is used to transmit power. Liquids are not compressible, gasses are. Air is cleaner and more forgiving Liquid will crush whatever gets in its way. YMMV
Ultimate stand has a hydrolic power sub poles. Thats what I use. Great video. most gyms have crazy acoustics so you dont more sound.. The walls help out a lot.
Brian, Great video. I love my EKX-12p, I had 2 EKX-18sp's and sold them as I was not convinced they were enough for the gigs I do. So if I need subs I rent or borrow some JBL PRX/SRX depending on gig. Id love to say I would try that many people with my equipment but from my experience I would not feel comfortable, I find it does not throw well for voice/microphone, with all the good mixer/controllers. I did a gig with 325 people set up on the short side of a 45 by 95 room and i found for music they could throw the whole room but for voice, half way down they could not be heard well for speeches. At the moment im debating on getting something like your Evolve 50's for weddings and anything bigger user a Yorkville Elite or some other line array when the amount of people is needed. What I find surprising is that I found the subs limit quick and would run out of bass when needing that deep rumble like playing old school hip hop for a 250 person wedding.
Great video as always Brian. Have you looked into the Gator Frameworks sub poles? Also, can you do a video on how to fix a leaning top cab when placed on poles? I have the Ekx 15 tops and have a noticeable lean on one of them.
I too have a disability (left hemi cerebral palsy). I bought the EV ZXA1 sub years ago based on your recommendation of it. Now I'm getting into school dances/proms. I am looking at the EKX 15 or 18 and have virtually the same reasons you have. I'm a little worried that I would regret not getting the 18 (or two down the road). Did you find the decision tough between the two? Is the EKX 15 that much of a change to the ZXA? Thanks!
I have used and love the ETX and EKX systems. An optimized EKX rig will really kick tail. I personally use QSC systems and Meyer Sound systems but I do really like the EKX systems and if you have it optimized then it will easily do 1000
How's it going brother.. Nice info, I kinda have the same problem. I own 2 full range E.V. speakers that handle up to 1000 people just by themselves. No subs either. They put out an Extreme amount of Bass tho. Almost 142 spl peak and 136 spl continuous.. Each speaker weighs 175 lbs.. Bad for small gigs.. Need to get a different set for small parties..
I agree. I also have the ETX 15p & 18p’s and I’m still trying to dial up the best setting. I find the speakers hitting peak/temp peak. I watch the levels coming from my DDJ-SZ2 as well as my Mackie ProFX 12 mixer. I’m open to any suggestions to help alleviate this problem of peaking all the time. 2:25 that is what I call minimalism I only have a pair Alto TS312 for 150+ people and when it is 300+ people I rent some JBL or QSC subs to go do that event
How loud was it on the dance floor ? In dbs..... sorry but 800 people with that rig ... not what a professional would Recommend for that amount of people
@@djchupa69 I don't know if you watched this video in full, or the last video I posted that this one is a Q&A to. The short version is I was hired for a 600 or less student event in a room I'm familiar with. The number grew to 800+, however, the $$ did not increase accordingly. So, I made the assessment, based on the room along with the EKX system I'm familiar with and own & did the event with them. Nobody complained. 800+ kids danced for 3 hours. Nothing clipped. Some students were asked about the SQ afterwards & they thought it sounded fine, said it was loud enough, enjoyed themselves. As I said in the video, I'm NOT suggesting everyone uses this rig in any environment with any type of signal running behind it. I am saying, know your system AND budget your equipment according to the fee you charge / can get from your clients. I also sad that people hear what they want to hear in these videos.
The students and faculty were pleased and happy. Are you the DJ police? Are you ready to run over to the school and demand that they be not happy? "You cant be happy! Cause.....GEEEAAAARRRRR!!!!" Calm down buddy. Not everyone does it the same way.
I did 720 person school dance with 4 Alto TS series speakers, and 2 12'" subs in a big ball room a couple of years ago. Sound was Superb. Many people would say "Oh, Alto, that is not what a professional would use". ...They are brand snobs. The fact is that those speakers handled the job fine, and I had 600+ students dancing the entire time.

Buy what u need and what u can sell ... I rent equipment for my larger events

Bullshit. No reason to not couple the subs. Your set up created whats called a "power alley" and you should admit when and where you are wrong.
