Thank you for this helpful review. I ended up purchasing two 15" tops and 1 18" sub ekx series and I'm impressed. Thinking of adding a second sub but I don't even think I need it. I've played in huge ballrooms and even outdoors at a park and the sound is amazing. I highly recommend these!
Thank You John for your review I also am a consumer and user of various lines of EV speakers. Just wanted to clear up one thing you mentioned. When you were in the Subwoofer portion of the DSP Menu you talked about communication with other speakers. For the record, so viewers of your video aren't confused, there is no communication with other speakers. As you showed not only are there settable crossover points such as 80, 100, 120 and 150 Hz EV has put options to allow people who also own certain EV tops to not have think about what crossover point that should be set. For example if you have an EV-18SP and also are using an EV-15P as a "top" the menu gives you the option to just set EV-15P as your crossover point and not have to think about the frequency that needs to be set. Truth be told it is just a marketing ploy because, depending on the top you use, it is setting the sub to crossover at one of the numerical crossover frequencies also available in the menu such as the 80, 100 Hz points etc. Also the xlr outputs on the sub are not affected by the crossover point you set on the subs menu. Xlr Outputs 1 and 2 are a throughput out. They are connected in parallel inputs 1 and 2 respectively. Whatever signal exists at input 1 is the exact same signal at output 1 and whatever signal exists at input 2 is the exact same signal at output 2. The outputs are not "mix" outputs like some subs from other companies have. The crossover point that has been set on the sub just limits the frequency range of the sub therefore when you the sub's crossover point you also need to set the crossover point on your tops/mains to either the same point or close depending on if you prefer an "overlapping" of bottom end from subs and mains or not. The output jacks on the subs and mains on these EVs are there for convenience so you don't have to run 4 xlr cables from your mixer. Due to the fact that the outputs on these speakers are full range and not affected by the crossover setting on either the subs or mains it really doesn't make a difference if you come out of your mixer into the sub's input and then out of your sub to the top/main speaker or vice versa.
I have the EKX 12p and the 18sp. They sound very great. I've never heared such a good sound quality! They have a good sound, no matter where you're using them or on which volume.
I bought up a whole arsenal of these cabs (4 EKX18sp and 8 EXK15p) for my band for the house and monitors. I am amazed by the clarity. In fact, about 3 local musician friends of mine have bought some after hearing mine.
Just installed a pair of these and one had a dent in the grille. I know it's cosmetic, but when you buy shiny brand new things, you want it to look nice. I was super impressed by the sound quality compared to our venues old PA, JBL EON 615s. They were good entry level speakers, but the EKX are definitely a step up in sound, volume, and clarity. I like the clip feature with the LED light, as a FOH mixer, it helps to see if I'm sending too hot a signal to the speakers. The JBLs we had were almost always close to the limiter with the heavy metal, punk, and rock shows we have had in the past. I look forward to this weekend when we have a band to see how much headroom I have in pushing vocals out. That was always a problem at our venue, the way the stage is shaped gives a very loud stage volume that the JBLs had issues matching or exceeding that volume in order for vocals to be heard. I think the EVs are going to do the trick and I shouldn't have any issues even with the loudest metal/punk/rock bands coming into our venue.
@@jessecoonen7881 They held up pretty decent. I could get vocals out ahead. I did notice if it was ridiculously loud on stage I could still bounce off of the limiter, but they haven't shut down on me yet. I really do not like driving them that hard, or any PA speaker for that matter, as it's not going to sound as good. But, if loud bands want to be loud, that's their choice.
i love the way you got into details of every specs of the PA systems broth front and back which is quite and uncommon thing most reviews do .. Thx and God Bless
Thanks for this review, bruh. I am purchasing mine this week after watching this video and checking them out live. The sound is superb and much better than the ZLZ15ps that Guitar Center has been trying to push. This speaker I will be able to keep for a very long time without having to upgrading. Review appreciated by a newbie. This will be my 1st DJ speaker purchase.
Just wanted to update you all. The EKX-15P is the BEST bang for the buck "if" a person is mostly concerned about having THE BEST sound for the money. I also have a pair of QSC K12.2 and the EKX-15P, by far, is "much better" SOUND QUALITY. Thank you for your review! I just wanted to update you all. Bless!
Great guy, great videos. I DJ'd for over 30 years, to old anymore to take but a few gigs here and there. Where was all this gear years ago??? lol. Thanks for posting these.
I have these speakers and there awesome sound obviously with covid 19 performing the last year and a half has been obsolete for me but I will go back gigging and I would recommend these speakers to anyone wanting to sing etc fabulous I wouldn't change them
Hello I own the EV 15 in powered monitor and went to a show and it would NOT turn on. Replaced the power cables twice, made sure power was everywhere else. Good. It just was sea in the water. My question: do these have a fuse and where? I couldn’t find one by the input power cord plug? Any help would be appreciated.
Just my thought but I can’t agree with small venue comment. Went to an event not long ago and dj had w him 2 15”’ and their sub. Venue was big and speakers used were cheaper or model should I say was cheaper than these Evs. (Won’t list brand model since I don’t want to sound bias.) I was impressed to say the least. I just ordered the 12” and sub (EVs) and am certain it will do well in small venue, hoping for a medium size venue too.
I have a EKX 18p, love the sub. I work with a guy that uses the QSC KW181 and my honest unbiased opinion the EKX 18 has more of a solid punch at lower db's. Looking to upgrade my current tops with the EKX 12's or 15 depending on the deal my supplier can give me.
Not yet, my annual summer gig was cancelled so I didn't want to spend that kind of money. Next year i'll get them. I do have a sweet 16 in Dec looking into getting some lighting. Interested in the Gigbar IRC 2 by Chauvet. Also need to get a wireless mic my other until is kaput.
Nice I have have 2 gig bars and I really like them. Easy set up and gets the dance floor going. KPODJ gave me the best price. I might add a disco ball to them or maybe a scanner but thats more of an add on opposed to necessity
great review! I don't have the tops but I do have the ekx18sp and I'm on my 1st replacement from EV. I've found that the logo plate on the front rattles really bad on the high frequency bass notes. Now my replacement is doing the exact same thing. Have you had any issues like this with your speakers?
+LouieMiLLz : probably not! you know how it is ....the more it rattled and shake the more they love that shit sound ...is like Beethoven to their ears...lol SMH
Thanks for the excellent review and info....enjoyed the review, especially taking me through the settings. There are plenty of quality powered speakers out there and I've listened to most of them. I keep coming back to the EV's for looks, durability, quality and features. I intend to use EKX-12p's and EKX-15sp subs to power my four piece acoustic band.
Great video my man. I just got me a pair of ELX115P/118P and was wondering if I'm better off not using the EQ feature, since I'm running the setup straight from my DDJ-SX. I used them for the very first time last night so I'm trying to get familiar with the output sound.
Good question! If you’re without a sub and are needing more bass power, using the Club EQ preset would be a good idea. If you do have a sub, I recommend using the Music preset. Do some tests with your new equipment! Play some bass heavy music and some not super bass heavy music while these presets are on. It’s nice to be able to know what your speakers can do and what it might need depending on the gig.
Do you have to save your settings with a bank or does it save the settings after the first set up? If you have to bank it do you have to recall it every time or will it just use it automatically? What’s a good volume to set the subs on at first? Unity maybe?
I have the EV EKX 18SP running with RCF ART12A tops. I contemplated a long time between the EV EKX18sp and JBL PRX718 XLF. Decided on EV due to comprobable output, price and size/weight. Everything has got to fit in my SUV. Perfect choice for my type of gigs.
I had bad luck with the EKX speakers...XLR cables getting stuck in the input of the speaker DSP was power cycling in the middle of a gig. Do a show with E40 and the highs was going in and out and it wasn't peaking either....Trade them all in and got QSC
Hey man, sweet review, one thing tho, the music mode is for musicians and bands that are performing, when you’re playing per recorded music it’s best to use club 😁🤙
That’s incorrect, music is for pre recorded music. Live is for musicians and bands. Club changes the internal EQ to have more bass response for working without a subwoofer. This is according to the manual.
Hey John. In your opinion, how would the EKX keep up well in loud environments? Have you ran them for a full band before? I’m looking at the EKX as opposed to the ETX for cost purposes. Wondering if the EKX would run out of gas. Any thoughts or experience?
I beat the hell out of mine and have had no issues with them running out of steam. You gotta make sure you have enough rig for the gig though. If you’re in a bar or club, you’re in great shape with the EKX series from EV.
This single sub is a great buy . I have one single unit and for indoor party gig it will rock the place. Now I play in a 3 people group , 2 guitars and one bass guitar or tuba player. Now when it comes out outside u def need 2 of this or even 4 . 2 on each side. Now we have done gigs with just a single sub ekx 18 but tbh the sound pressure with just a single sub it is not enough when u play outdoors and no walls around u to push or bounce the sound. So we have been sacrificing this baby at its maximum volume with peaking light all the times. Now it had done the job beautifully but now we have move to another set of subs. I do love the clean beautiful sound this produce but for live music you will see clipping and if u run drums on this things. You will need a pair of 4 def .
by any chance do you use a behringer mixer ex xr 18? I need some help mixing some stuff and i just cant get it sounding good with xr 18 and ekx 15s, it sounds really horrid. can mix instruments but not actual music lol
Just got the elx118p but not really sure I want to keep it since it's all enclosed and no vents for the heat. I'm thinking of returning it and getting this ekx18.
John I am still really new to the industry. My current setup is the Sony Shake 99. I am planning on moving up in setups in March of 2019. Performance wise do you still recommend these speakers.
Hi John, I have 4 Ekx 18sp, 2 Ekx 15p and 2 Etx 12p for 350 to max 500 people. What’s the best set up for these speakers i have…? 2 Ekx 18sp stack on top of each other with Ekx 15p on top on both sides, crossover to each other or 2 Ekx 18sp stack on top of each other with Etx 12p on top on both sides, crossover to 100hz
For 500 people you are going to need more all of your speakers. Option 1. Put the 2 Ekx 18sp on the left with a 12p and 15, and 2 Ekx 18sp on the left with a 12p and 15p -- have the 12 p face in toward the dance floor in a angle and the 15p face forward (this will cover all angles and fill up the room). Option 2 - put all 4 Ekx 18sp in middle of the dance floor and put 12p and 15p pair on left and right -- have the 12 p face in toward the dance floor in a angle and the 15p face forward. Option 2 will have hard hitting bass that will fill up the room. I would suggest using 80 hz cross over, it will sound much better. I also suggest looking into getting 2 Yorkville ES21P Elite Series 21, with 2 RCF 945A tops (this setup will out perform 4 Ekx 18sp, 2 Ekx 15p and 2 12p by a lot, and less equipment to carry around).
Thank you very much John. Seriously means a lot, also have been using option 2 all along but i will try them on 80hz at my next setup. I live in Denmark so Yorkville speaker are impossible to get here
@@djtafdollar1162 80hz will be a more balanced sound (when using 12" - 15" tops), and 100hz will have more boom, and may sound louder (I use 100hz on 10" tops, depends on the type of music, I switch back and forth according to the hall or room). Go by ear when you are doing a sound test in the room - test out a song that has a lot of bass. I mostly use RCF speakers now, and I just leave the subwoofer crossover at 80 hz for hip hop, R&B type of music - to my ears that sounds good.
thanks for the review. it was very informative. i usually dj weddings up to 500 people and i want an upgrade my set. how many EVs mids and bass ((like the ones you have)) would i need to achieve a solid sound?
Hi John, great review! Quick Question - Do you run your EKX Rig directly from your DJ mixer/controller, or pass through a mixing desk console or dbx? If so, what DJ mixer/mixing desk/dbx do you use?
Thank you for understanding that holding a phone up to an 18 is dumb. I look for speaker reviews hoping to see the drivers and crossovers and whatnot but they just have a 21 second video of nothing but distortion.
Hi my friend! I am doing dj in korea! I'm currently using two Ev-zlx15p at the party. But I'm feeling the limits of the speakers! So I'm looking for different brands of speakers, and I'm thinking about the Ev speakers and the sub-woofer combination. (Ev-zkx15p + Ev-zkx18sp) The price of the ztx series is too heavy. How many people do you think can be used at outdoor and indoor parties as zkx speakers? And I wonder if there is a difference between a 12-inch speaker + 15-inch sub-woofer and a 15-inch speaker + 18-inch sub-woofer. I'm going to set up my own speakers, and I wonder what kind of combination would be if I could only weigh the effectiveness of the speakers at the party without any inconvenience in size. I want to see the best efficiency in a reasonable price speaker.
Party Loud Events no this thing is like a cardboard box compared to the KW181...it is much lighter which it doesn’t hit as low it’s incredibly lightweight which is why it has no casters. This will also limit quicker than the KW181.
greetings from romania bro a question please 🙏 .. for live music I'm interested in sounding good! which speakers do you recommend passive or active? of 12 or 15.
I work at the Nautical Pool in Lake Havasu City over the summer and play twice a week at temperatures over 105 degrees. I only hit thermal overload after about 6 hours of heavy play. I have been using 2- ekx18sp and 2- zlx15sp. I just ordered 2- etx18sp and 2-etx15sp hoping they pound harder then the ekx subs. I was not happy with the zlx honestly. The sound has never been crisp and clean for me.
I also own a pair of ZLX's, the EKX boxes are far and away better than those. The ETX is even better than theEKX's. I don't think you made a bad choice.
i belive djs in particular buy these boxes and do things with them that they weren't intented to do, for example I've seen a lot of djs buy the zlx and play them full range for 300 plus people in large rooms. these boxes were made for more intimate shows if your using them only. i believe in bring more to a show than i need in terms of sound meaning bring the sub, u can always turn it down. but you can't turn up what u don't have.
For live and acoustic the more appropriate it's the 12" speaker because it reproduces the mids better than the 15". 15" it's suitable for subwoofers than monitors. Look it on youtube for more details - Live Sound. DO NOT Use 15"+ Horn 2-Way Cabinets By Scott Grove
The volume knob on the back appears to be a rotary encoder. They can be vibration sensitive, which you can probably confirm if you observe the volume stops fluctuating after the volume attenuates. It might be the rotary encoder or the cable connecting the encoder to the circuit board (assuming it isn't soldered directly to the PCB).
If I were to buy the EKX 15 passive sub would I need an amp or can I just hook it up to my powered tops? also do you think the 15 passive sub can support a ZLX15p on top via pole mount? the top speaker would be 50 ish pounds
Yes you would need an external amp. I supposed the EKX 15 could handle a ZLX 15 on top as they aren't that heavy. My suggestion would be to go with the EKX 18 to get more frequency response. Assuming you got a pair of the 15's paired up with the ZLX 15's you already have would make for a ton of mid bass.
I use these with subs all the time. Any speaker can be prone to clipping, you have to make sure your gain structure is right. I haven't had any issues.
nice video...... i say look at jbl prx800 series also :). i own a set for 8 years now and they still rockin :). for a little more, srx828 and two 815's costs about 5 k........ i have heard the ekx's..... definitely not as clear and musical as the jbl boxes.... vocals thru jbl just sound better....in my opinion :)
I own the ETX's 35P and 18SP's they are outstanding after mods. I play clubs and large events like live bands at maximum volume. You cannot beat the clarity and throw in the price range. The JBL SRX's are of similar quality but the EV's are cheaper and JBL Compression drivers are notorious for failing. $150 a pop. I have owned most brands of speakers in my career and I tote no flag bought lots of JBL C.D.'s. I also have the EV live-X 18" sub, it is a solid sub and you can tell the difference but it's a much lighter box and for the money, I'd buy the ETX's and replace the driver with a heavier magnet speaker like a Peavey Lo-Max, I've done this because the driver in my sub and 35p's both failed under warranty. when I got the replacements i pulled them and put 18 lo-max in the subs and 15 eminence Kilomax in the 35p's. The performance of the 35p's had a marginal improvement, noticeable, slightly, but I'll never blow it up. The 18sp ETX however gained a great deal of thump and very accurate tight bass with less farting at max hip hop. Very sweet indeed and of course I'll never blow that beast up EVER since it handles 4000 Watts continuous. EKX's will never beat the ETX's, it's the amp and size of Cab that makes the difference.
The only problem I have with this speaker is that the HF is only 1" while the QSC has a 1.75". I guess EV is taking their chances using the built-in DSP
The EKX and K series aren't even in the same family. The EKX are 750 watts continuous, 1500 peak. The k series is 1000 watts continuous, and 2000 watts peak. The SPL is pretty close however. Both are fantastic boxes. Keep in mind that when you push them to their limit, EKX will shut off, but the K series will lower themselves. But like I said, both are great boxes.

Unity maybe?
have you listened rcf art 735 & rcf sub 8003? looking forward to buy those which you reviewed or rcf
looking for advice
great video
I have the EV EKX 18SP running with RCF ART12A tops. I contemplated a long time between the EV EKX18sp and JBL PRX718 XLF. Decided on EV due to comprobable output, price and size/weight. Everything has got to fit in my SUV. Perfect choice for my type of gigs.
Glad they are working good for you!
Great infor.... what advice can you give me for using EV ELX Series.
I had bad luck with the EKX speakers...XLR cables getting stuck in the input of the speaker DSP was power cycling in the middle of a gig. Do a show with E40 and the highs was going in and out and it wasn't peaking either....Trade them all in and got QSC
That sound like more of a cabling issue. What brand cables where you using? Sorry you had bad luck.
I was using Monster XLR cables....It happened twice with two different speakers. The cables were excellent quality
Thank you for the information
Hey man, sweet review, one thing tho, the music mode is for musicians and bands that are performing, when you’re playing per recorded music it’s best to use club 😁🤙
That’s incorrect, music is for pre recorded music. Live is for musicians and bands. Club changes the internal EQ to have more bass response for working without a subwoofer. This is according to the manual.
thanks man excellent review 👍
thanks for watching!
Great video! I'm a singer, does this speaker have reverb?
What size of audience can it cover rightly about?
Nice review! is there a sound difference between going from sub to speaker or vise versa?
I wanna know too
by any chance do you use a behringer mixer ex xr 18? I need some help mixing some stuff and i just cant get it sounding good with xr 18 and ekx 15s, it sounds really horrid. can mix instruments but not actual music lol
Just got the elx118p but not really sure I want to keep it since it's all enclosed and no vents for the heat. I'm thinking of returning it and getting this ekx18.
DJTRANZFORMED the ELX IS a good sub but the EKX is far superior.
Dj Woo Pig I def agree. Gonna have to do the switch.
John I am still really new to the industry. My current setup is the Sony Shake 99. I am planning on moving up in setups in March of 2019. Performance wise do you still recommend these speakers.
Fern Entertainment hell yeah!!
Thank you John!
Hi John, I have 4 Ekx 18sp, 2 Ekx 15p and 2 Etx 12p for 350 to max 500 people. What’s the best set up for these speakers i have…?
2 Ekx 18sp stack on top of each other with Ekx 15p on top on both sides, crossover to each other or
2 Ekx 18sp stack on top of each other with Etx 12p on top on both sides, crossover to 100hz
@@quadvr So i set everything to 80Hz if i understand you correctly 12” tops, 15” tops and 18” sub right?
@@djtafdollar1162 correct, let the subs play everything up to 80hz and below, and let the tops play 80hz and above.
thanks for the review. it was very informative. i usually dj weddings up to 500 people and i want an upgrade my set. how many EVs mids and bass ((like the ones you have)) would i need to achieve a solid sound?
I would say 2 boxes per side. You could get away with one per side if you had them high enough.
thanks a lot
Also the EV ETX35’s are a great upgrade for mid high 12s and 15’s. Sacrifice a little clarify for warm low mids and punchy bass.
can I install them horizontally or they have to be vertically.
help me with this please.
thank you!!!!
Hey thnx for amazing review ! if i buy the ev ekx 15p and some good subs for our rock band, for how much people we can play? Thnx
Hi John, great review! Quick Question - Do you run your EKX Rig directly from your DJ mixer/controller, or pass through a mixing desk console or dbx? If so, what DJ mixer/mixing desk/dbx do you use?
@9:36
Thanks for the prompt response John! What dj mixer do you use?
Is the EKX 18SP in the same league as the QSC kw181 when it comes to lows, for Modern rap and trap style edm bass?
Party Loud Events no this thing is like a cardboard box compared to the KW181...it is much lighter which it doesn’t hit as low it’s incredibly lightweight which is why it has no casters. This will also limit quicker than the KW181.
greetings from romania bro a question please 🙏 .. for live music I'm interested in sounding good! which speakers do you recommend passive or active? of 12 or 15.
Me personally I'm a Peavey man myself, PA Speakers. What do you think about the 3 way dual SP4 4000 watts... I'm thinking about getting them.
MAN, these absolutely crush peavey. Not hating here, just plain old truth. These EV's are the sheeeit!!!
Have you ever ran this combination off a small portable generator? If so, did it run ok?
Multiple times, no problems at all.
Does one need to be a sound engineer to hold nor have a sound company??
Thank you for a very good review..
Thank you for subscribing!
Have you heard the seismic Audio mainshock 15 yet.Just wondering what they sound like.
What about ev zlx15bt? If you put good subs under it can u handle about 200 people inside for a band?
Cool Video. Very informative 🙂👍
looking to upgrade to these
hello frend how you conect the drive rack to the speakers electronic vioce can you show please because you explain very well thank you.
Ive actually gotten rid of the driverack since recording this video. An industry expert told me it is not needed for my setup.
is this still working till now?
Could you advise the drive rack settings you are using for these speakers?
no more drive rack.An industry expert told me it is not needed for my setup.
Is the 15p a good monitor to vocal and acoustic guitar? Thanks.
Can you add casters to the 18s?? I know the etx has casters
No casters on the EKX, might be something you can get directly from EV.
The volume on my speaker goes up n down by itself do you know why that might be?
The volume knob on the back appears to be a rotary encoder. They can be vibration sensitive, which you can probably confirm if you observe the volume stops fluctuating after the volume attenuates. It might be the rotary encoder or the cable connecting the encoder to the circuit board (assuming it isn't soldered directly to the PCB).
i got the tops in passive mode i like Ev
NICE!
What brand/type XLR cable do you use for your setup for speakers?
Whirlwind
Hi guys, up to how many people can i play music with 2x EKX 15 and 1 EKXsp ? Thanks...
great vid
thanks!
Hello sir I'm need Microphone Ev
So how much?
Very good stuffs I liked your video
thanks for watching!
I thought it was a working review !! Same old same old 😤
How are the EKX 15's without a sub, and do they clip?
I use these with subs all the time. Any speaker can be prone to clipping, you have to make sure your gain structure is right. I haven't had any issues.
and what is the right gain for ekx?
My sub really don’t bump that much
Ha, the auto subtitles said "crime entertainment" rather than Crown
😂😂
Can I connect the EKX 15p with the makies thump 15?
you should be able to!
great video
thanks!
Do you use two or one sub?
nice video...... i say look at jbl prx800 series also :). i own a set for 8 years now and they still rockin :). for a little more, srx828 and two 815's costs about 5 k........ i have heard the ekx's..... definitely not as clear and musical as the jbl boxes.... vocals thru jbl just sound better....in my opinion :)
nice video..EV aint no joke. I got the TX
The ETX series are a great choice for powered speakers!
ever use these for live sound?
Michael Chandler I've used this setup several times for live sound at outdoor events for local productions with no issues!
arrright, thank you. nice review
nice video- im think im going here..
They are a great choice for sure!
EV ,Klipch, both good on Arkansas USA product
YES SIR!
Ev it's China made
All speakers need to go to 11.
The speaker doesn't but my drive rack does!!
+Dj Woo Pig lol! If you have some time, check out my videos.
+tbmproductionsdj1 will do!
These do man. Trust me. If you're on the fence about these.....GET EM
The only problem I have with this speaker is that the HF is only 1" while the QSC has a 1.75". I guess EV is taking their chances using the built-in DSP
I think you are right. the new K.2's have a 1''HF driver and now have built in DSP. I think the EKX was ahead of its time.
Rms?
ev ekx or qsc k12?
ricardo fogaça EKX and it ain't even close.
But like I said, both are great boxes.
i have both boxes, and I've played through limit with the EKX I've never had them shut down. i agree with u there both great.
They trew a bunch of these away at my dads job because of damaged boxes literally
