      @@TheMoose5 Pilots get the destination airport's weather by tuning to the ATIS frequency. Whenever the ATIS is updated, it cycles through the alphabet. When the pilots contact the approach controller they state which version of the ATIS they have received so the controller knows they have the most current information. This pilot forgot which ATIS version they had received.

    Just a note....at 4:28 the control advises that Portsmouth has a longer runway and is 30 miles away. The subtitles read Portland Airport which is further away and is a shorter runway than MHT.

    • @AirTrafficVisualised
      @AirTrafficVisualised  5 років тому

      Good catch. Not sure why I thought Portland made any sense given it's on the other side of the continent. I'd blame transcription fatigue but it's less than a quarter of the way through the video!

      @@AirTrafficVisualised Portland Maine (KPWM) is about 65 nautical miles away so it isn't really that bad but Pease (KPSM) definitely has the longer runway. I live in Maine and grew up flying around the region so it was a bit obvious for me. By the way I love the graphics and the audio.

  • @OutbackCatgirl
    @OutbackCatgirl 6 років тому +3

    I love how well made these are, and how well they showcase the not-quite-day-to-day abnormalities pilots everywhere are trained to handle, and really gives a glowing display of just how safe flying really is. Every video makes me feel that much safer with flying, and as someone brought up watching cheesy movies, overdramatized 'true disaster' documentaries, and overly-dramatic news coverage I thank you.
    Have you ever considered expanding those horizons to occasionally cover other sectors like rail and marine events? though these might not have much audio to spice up, your visual style seems like it would be a great aid in, for example, visualizing interesting ATSB, NTSB, or other transport safety organizations from ountries besides, their incident reports and the like. I know for sure I've seen a lot of very interesting and thoroughly detailed breakdowns of events both minor and major, though most would be inherently less interesting in a way, since there's a lack of audio accompaniment and a good amount of guesswork in extrapolating data, especially from older incidents. Plus those may not be your area of interest, and that is perfectly reasonable. ♥
    I simply find all sorts of network mass-transportation systems and the layers of training, safety etc that go alongside when small incidents of human error, infrastruture failure, or system failure occur - or *nearly* occur, as near-misses are often very interesting and invaluable to the understanding of safety - to be quite fasinating reading, and feel they might be a neat concept to try on if you ever feel the need to shake up the usual content with a departure from the norm on special occasions.

    • @AirTrafficVisualised
      @AirTrafficVisualised  5 років тому +2

      Thanks for the detailed comment. As for exploring incident reports, I have done a few of those in the past - check out Aircraft Loading Error (ua-cam.com/video/dC-740IWL1U/v-deo.html) and Separation Fixation (ua-cam.com/video/HTxNruF8nK0/v-deo.html) for examples of that kind of content.
      Regarding rail and marine incidents, I'm reminded of season 3 of Air Crash Investigation / Mayday where there were some of those episodes thrown in. I think the producers at Cineflix ended up feeling about those experiments the same way I did - they're not worth pursuing. Not that I'm ruling it out completely but my area of interest is predominately aviation. Additionally, as you said, there's much less opportunity for including real world radio transmissions for that sort of mode of transport, meaning it'd be on me to make it interesting! If there was a particularly interesting marine or rail incident I might consider it but for now I'm quite happy covering aviation. If there's any specific incident you have in mind (aviation, rail, marine, or anything else) feel free to suggest it.
      Many thanks again for the well thought out comment, really pleased to hear that people enjoy my work. Usually people say they feel less safe flying after watching my videos but really I think they illustrate how safe it is. You can just hear in the pilot's voices when they declare an emergency - they're calm and ready to respond.
      Cheers!

    Outstanding level of production. Don't you burn out from the effort you put into these videos? :)

    • @AirTrafficVisualised
      @AirTrafficVisualised  6 років тому +5

      My secret to not burning out is multifaceted: I only make videos that I'm interested in; I only make videos when I feel like it (thus why there are sometimes pretty big gaps in my output); and I've got a lot of templates, batch scripts, and workflows that I've developed over the three years I've been making content that really help out with the more finicky and time consuming aspects of production.

    • @eternal404
      @eternal404 6 років тому +1

      @@AirTrafficVisualised Would you mind giving us some insight into your workflow? Especially the real-life data processing and representation. I'm trying to achieve this myself for my personal flights.

    • @AirTrafficVisualised
      @AirTrafficVisualised  6 років тому +1

      Sure. Like I said, I've been developing my workflow for several years so it's not straightforward, but for someone looking at map-based visualisations I'd recommend you look into QGIS. I use OpenStreetMap data as the base map layer (styled in QGIS). For someone just starting out, I'd recommend trying to get a static image visualisation first - get comfortable with maps, projections, styling, etc.
      Animating the data is a whole next level of complexity, if you're not already familiar with software like After Effects then you're going to have a rough time. My work heavily relies on expressions (a type of JavaScript coding in After Effects) to drive the animations, cameras, and visual effects. I'm still actively developing my workflow a lot each time I work on a video and I've been at it fairly solidly for a number of years, so it'd be an extremely steep learning curve for a newcomer.
      Anyway, I hope this helps you get started and hasn't put you off too much!

    • @eternal404
      @eternal404 5 років тому +1

      @@AirTrafficVisualised thanks. I am actually somewhat familiar with AE and expressions, and I managed to make animations based on real-life data ("black box" recordings): ua-cam.com/video/6W7kWo9q_9A/v-deo.html but I find the workflow finicky and time consuming. I haven't tried in some time but I remember having issues with poor rendering performance, object tracking, and some bugs. So far I have been using an AE plugin for maps. I'll check out QGIS :)
      May I ask where you get your data (traffic, weather, airspaces)?

  • @steveJM9231r3
    @steveJM9231r3 5 років тому

    Only thing I failed to understand is why they just didn't burn fuel while at the same time going towards their destination instead of going in circles in the midst of a weather system. I understand they wanted to be close to a landing strip, but between NH and FL there are many many places they could have used if things became dicey. I'm sure they had their reasons, I just don't know what they were.

    So SWA2515 declared an emergency but no indication on their tag that they changed squawk codes. I realize this is a reproduction but I am curious whether it is typical to highlight an emergency aircraft tag on live ATC tracks or if that's just done in certain reproductions.

    • @WayneM1961
      @WayneM1961 5 років тому

      The last time a plane was brought down by lightning was way back in 1963! Planes are designed to discharge lightning with no ill effects, yes you might see a big flash, you might even hear a bang, but you are not in any danger. A plane gets hit by lightning everyday somewhere in the world. You have a greater chance of being killed by a lightning bolt hitting you on the ground then you have of being in a plane brought down by it. See this, maybe things will be clearer for you ua-cam.com/video/olxaFBtCV4Q/v-deo.html

      The vibration they got immediately after a lightning strike was enough reason to call an emergency. You don't take any chances with passenger's lives when you're in the air. This was handled very professionally by everyone concerned, no one died, and the plane sustained no further damage. If only all emergencies could end this well.
