    Here is a detailed look at the MSR Windburner 1.0L Integrated Camp Stove. I have used this stove from 12,000 ft elevation down to Sea Level. I have used it in Negative temperatures up to 100+ degrees. Extreme winds(Really extreme) seem to not even exist when you're using it...most likely the best Backpacking Stove I have ever used!

    I agree with your review (including your dissatisfaction with the MSR lighter). I’ve used the Windburner for five years in heat and cold, and I’m delighted each time I use it. I don’t have the press, but I recently added the skillet to my kit. It has some quirks and a learning curve, but it’s been a solid addition.

    If you want to use your own pot or pan with that, take a solo stove (great back-up) or just the top part to set on top to bring any pot or pan. Fits better upside down.

    Thanks you for a great review. No fluff just facts. MSR makes great stoves but they are on the costly side. Have had a MSR whisper lite since 89, stove has never failed yet but the pump on the fuel canisters can be a annoying.

      Buy once, Cry once! It has always worked out well for me in the Outdoors gear department. You figure you spend x2 or x3 the price for the higher end gear...but it lasts 5x-10x as long...so in the end you save money. Though price doesn't always mean Quality...so information like this review is necessary.

    Agree that this is THE one to buy, but surprised you didn’t mention the elephant in the room regarding anything comparable...i.e. Jetboil. This is superior in performance and RELIABILITY versus Jetboil, and it’s clearly worth comparing. Jetboil works, and you may not have an issue until it’s gets really cold or long term durability becomes an issue, then you’ll wish you bought an MSR.

    Jet boil first to come out. I've switched to MSR to try out.
    Msr needs a separate lighting source, spark ignition waste a lot of gas before it lights.
    I use mine during training, active calls, family trips. I've gone through 4 jetboils due to certain times needing to be hasty, over 8 yrs. They dont break just bend out of shape and need to cannibalize old to repair new but they keep working.
    Had one in the back of the rig during a campaign melted but still worked. Fire season is starting, I'll see if this msr holds up.

    This is a great review. Seems like it might be slightly slower to boil than the Jetboil Flash I bought, but the Jetboil's internal piezo lighter broke on my second trip. I've been using that MSR piezo stick for it, and it lights right up. I prefer the Windburner for all the accessories, and the finish of it is just so much easier to clean. I just wish lighting it was easier and built-in. I'd rather use lighters and matches solely as a backup.

  • @OleOlson
    @OleOlson 4 роки тому

    I'm considering switching to the Windburner (it seems better than Jetboil, and MSR is a quality company worth supporting), but my only concern is the cost of the fuel and waste. Right now I'm using a Whisperlite International and can refill my container using cheap white gas and just pump it up to pressurize. These smaller Isobutane containers can technically be refilled with just butane using adapters, but it seems like a big hassle. Still might be worth it despite the cost and extra garbage of the old containers just for a single cooking system though, as my stove plus container plus nested cookware/bowls/cups set is heavier and takes up at least twice the space.

    > In all tests that we have conducted with the two comparative products that we reviewed (Jetboil FLASH / MSR Windburner / MSR REACTOR) the slowest to boil (same amount of water) was the Jetboil Flash. We prefer the MSR models which can easily be lit with a match/cigarette lighter, because the problem we have found was with the Jetboil's piezo lighter is also NOT consistent, they break, and they also don't last for ever. You will notice that Jetboil DON'T sell just the Ignitor/Pot Support as an accessory/replacement part, at least nowhere that we have found. Both the MSR Windburner/Reactor wins hands down in this race of the highest standards for: quality, longevity, ease-of-use, weight, and robustness for backpacking/rafting trips in the wilderness with groups.

    I`m a kind of MSR Fanboy since more then 30 Years. I've had many different Stoves, but mostly from MSR ( 3 different Versions of the XGK Multifuel, a Whisperlite, 3 time the Reactor, etc. ); now I have this Windburner in 1L & 1,8L Version, as well as my beloved Reactor with 1L & 1,7L Pot, as well as the XGK newest Version.
    And I have to say quit honestly, that the Reactor ( especially with it's 1,7L Pot) is still much more Fuel efficient ( up to 25%) then the Windburner, and fare ahead above the Jetboils. Also the Reactor builds significant lower in its total hight, when operating as the Windburner, and I only use a stand underneath the Reactor, when operating in snow. The Windburner gets much to much Top heavy when in use with a full pot.....so it definitely need it's foot stand.
    And I also constantly read that the Reactor couldn't simmer......what is definitely NOT TRUE !! I use it since 2008 and never ever had a big problem simmering.
    But to be fair.....this kind of stove is not intended for fine queasiness cooking.......
    I use it mostly in north Scandinavia ( ICELAND ) under very harsh conditions, far away from gas supply or tech support. So it has to be reliable, very fuel efficient, easy to operate, less parts, that could be lost ( especially if they are small ) and weatherproof under all circumstances.
    Everyone asks for a build in piezo to be perfect..................BULLSHIT......I have never seen a Stove, that piezo is working properly for a longer time. Try to get it operate in rainy wett conditions.....it will fail for sure !!!!
    So make yourself a favor and buy a small fire steel ......it couldn't`brake, and if it is weet or dirty.....wip it of with your shirt and it will work and start all kind of Stoves without a problem, even in heavy weather.
    So my kind of choice : The MSR XKG for deep winter long range trips without support, Reactor (1,7L Pot) for equal trips, but only between 1-3 weeks with temps down to -10 Celsius in a max. Short Trips up to 1 week or where gas supply is not a big problem......then take the Windburner.
    DONE :-)
    Just my 50 Cent

    Good burner but way too heavy for my taste. Just the burner weighs 230 g.
    Another issue is the vessels. You have to buy also the dedicated MSR skillet to cook. No other skillet/pot/bowl will fit. I have it, I use it just for short, sunday picnics around the house. For trekking/hiking serious burners, search elsewhere.

      I would respectively and highly disagree, thought the proprietary pots and pans piss me off, that I agree on. The extra weight you carry for certainty of a hot meal/coffee in some very cold locations...is worth every extra oz. Yes there are some pocket stoves that work well too(in ideal situations), but they also waste a ton of fuel just trying to boil water in any type of tough climate or situation involving wind of any sort. The windburner is very quick and utilizes much less fuel for similar tasks. So once you factor in all the extra fuel you need to bring to make your pocket stove get each task done...the weight is actually heavier long run to bring more fuel for 10+ day trips.

    A rocket stove works much better and uses wood

    • @GY6outdoors
      @GY6outdoors  5 років тому +1

      I've used a rocket stove...yes they work well when you have enough dry wood to keep it going for the time you need it, but smoke and open flame in outdoor adventures can be a NO NO depending on where you go. This stove is acceptable damn near anywhere, and works 100% of the time in any environment as long as you have isobutane.
