How to set-up and external mic on a DSLR

  • Just a quick video answering comment that asked how to set-up an external mic on a DSLR. I'm using a Canon but most brands with manual audio settings should be the same (ish). The most important thing is to turn off and attenuation and set the gain to manual. If you don't, when your silent the camera will raise the gain to find sound and introduce noise. Thanks for watching.

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  6 років тому +7

      You may have to go down a bit more with the gain on the camera. The noise floor may be a bit lower. A few other possibilities are a cheap battery of a faulty mic/connection. The easiest way to see noise is to be silent and watch the levels. If it is not on zero or slightly above there is noise. It could also be an interference issue. Something interfering with the audio. I hope this helps. Thank you for commenting.

    Thanks...works well. Unfortunately, with the microphone I bought, when I mount it to a camera connected to AC rather than battery, there is terrible hum in the audio. Is there any way to eliminate that? I use two cameras in my work, and I have them connected to AC adapters so as to not need to change batteries all the time. They are Canon SL1 and T3i. I just tried it on a separate SL1 running on battery power, and sound is good. I like to record product videos in stereo, and these two cameras only have mono built-in mics.

      All shotgun mics will pickup noisy autofocus. If I use a shotgun mic while using autofocus I use a quiet STM lens. That is a Canon thing. I’m not sure if Nikon has an equivalent. An off camera mic is the only cure for not capturing focus sounds.

      Its kind of a feel thing when setting the audio level on the camera. Perhaps you may have to set yours a bit higher to get the audio levels you desire. Just watch the noise that is introduced as you bring up the audio levels. When noise begins to creep in drop it back one notch. If your audio is set too low you'll introduce distortion noise which will defeat the purpose of setting the levels to begin with. I hope this info helps.

      The camera used is a T6i canon. I don’t own a Nikon so I cannot create a video for it. However, the setup should be fairly close. The movie menu should have an audio tab. Inside of that tab choose manual sensitivity and set your gain to the onscreen audio levels. I hope this helps.

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  Рік тому +1

      Some mics just are not clean sounding. I've found you need to really be aware of your input volume. Generally, you can set your cameras input volume to about ¼ to get proper levels. When you are not speaking there should be very little movement of the levels gauge. Once you are speaking it should run to 12db or slightly above. Getting the ic as close as you can to your subject helps for not having to crank up the gain. FCPX has some great audio effects that help remove dead zone noise automatically. Unfortunately you need a Mac to use it. I use Mac exclusively so it works for me. I hear premier pro is also very good. I hope this helps.

    Hi! I'm using rode videomic on Canon T6i, but the sound capture is too low. I was using at the first line to avoid the noise. At the other hand, when I use at the middle as you show at the video the inner hiss is too high. It's really strange beacuse once I forgot to turn on the mic, obviously it didin't record any sound of me, but the hiss was present. Do you have any idea to solve this problem?

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  5 років тому +1

      Its really trial and error for the levels. Just below half is a good starting place but you can see the noise on the levels indicator so be on the lookout for that. One thing I do that may or may not help is I use a lithium ion battery in mine. It works well. Again I'm not sure if it actually helps but it doesn't hurt.

    Hi, I’m a novice to sound and DSLR shooting. I have the same RODE mic. What settings did you set the mic to? You know, the tiny buttons under the battery compartment? And can you explain the difference between turning the mic on to I vs O on the back? Thanks!

    • @NoProJoe
      @NoProJoe  5 років тому

      The switch on the back is 0-off, I-on flat filter, and the bent line is the high-pass filter on. It can help filter traffic sound, or something like an A/C unit. The switches inside are sensitivity switches. Most of the time you'll just leave it on 0 db. If you are recording in extremely loud conditions you can lower the sensitivity of your mic to avoid clipping the audio signal. Clipping will give you distortion and won't sound very good. I hope this helps.

      Unfortunately, the T3 doesn't have a mic input. It leaves only one good option for a cleaner audio capture. You can capture the audio in a iPhone or sound recording device.
