- Starting Flint & Steel Fires without char cloth using Stinging Nettle Tinder that has not been charred. Detailed, full tutorial. How to harvest and prepare it to successfully catch a spark from a Flint and Steel.
We also reveal a few new tricks for preparing our tinder, as well as what we believe to be the most important contributing factor that determines whether or not Stinging Nettle will catch a spark.
Natural Plant tinder that can reliably catch spark from flint and steel has been a difficult thing to come by in the past, but we have found three in our own backyard that consistently work. This video covers one of them which is stinging nettle and coming soon we will cover the others in detail.

Just having the know-how to make a fire when you really need one and can’t,is priceless!!!…I’m glad I got into this hobby!!!
At 71 I’m more than impressed . I thought I had some knowledge but this is upper story .😮😊
Best fire making channel ever hands down!!!!
Much appreciated!! 🔥🔥
Everyone is a student in nature.
Great effort!
This is excellent work, your attention to detail in terms of showing the tinder catching properties of different stages of nettle growth is super helpful. You guys really deserve tons of subs!!!!
Much appreciated. Have enjoyed your content many times. Thanks!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was so frustrated because I couldn't get my nettle to catch a spark and now I see what I need to do. Your attention to detail and helpfulness is an absolute game changer! If there was a bushcrafting achievement award you deserve the highest!
Fantastic guys, wooly here from Red branch Bushcraft
Always good to have multiple resources 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome video. Very thorough. I knew nettle was used by native americans for cordage, and it's a healthy snack. Now it's a top notch tinder bundle!
Outstanding research! Living in UK the most part is char cloth so this information you have provided is life changing thank you for your knowledge.
Thanks! We always appreciate the great comments and feedback.
OMG !!!! This is incredible work...OK I haven't actually tried it myself YET...but OMG. Like you say, the fact that nettles, of all things, something as common and easy to find as that,....well done guys, I think you may have nailed it. Next day off from wizarding is dedicated to this - I truly hope it is as you say. And the pestle which remains from a broken mortar in my kitchen is now going into my knapsack as a must carry Item too. Worth the weight lol. This dilemma has been on my mind for a very long time - how to make the fire that makes the char which makes the fire? - Our ancestors would probably laugh like hell if they saw us poncing around like we do. If I get results with this, I will celebrate with a nice cup of nettle tea. I think a few comments are kinda missing a point, saying it requires time to prepare etc - it only needs to work once and then you can make char with the results. Wizard is impressed👍.
Great comment thanks! Nettle has been very consistent for us. In the last 2 years we’ve discovered several more plants that work. Hopefully you got to see the big list video we did here’s the link in case you missed it:

As I remember in your flint and steel video, you could process both water leaf and burdock with your hands. I don’t have any nettle at my house but a lot of burdock, and I think a little water leaf. So I can’t wait to see the other burdock a water leaf video
I have hand processed Burdock and got it to take a spark. But only the brown dead leaf which is dry. Tried drying out a green leaf but it would not take a spark. Video is on my channel. Hope this helps.
Thanks Charles!
Very cool ideas, now my work begins 😄😂
Fantastic video, thanks so much for offering such important details.
Please show us how you make those awesome stone grinding bowls!
THANK YOU for the detailed video!!!
This is a video I like to see. I like that you showed all the processing procedures.
Fantastic, I tried this with the winter nettles, nearly broke my heart. I also tried cedar bark and mullen leaves , mullen leaves took a spark from a Ferro rod but not from the flint and steel
Ya the Winter nettle looks and feels like it should work but it’s definitely not reliable. Haven’t tried cleavers yet but it’s on the list. Keep us posted!
YOU guys are AWSOME!!! ❣❣❣Thank you for this hard work❤🧡💚
Good on you for making a follow up video on this subject. I went out and found the driest stalks I could find.
Could not get them to catch spark.
Was starting to think you were utilizing witchcraft! I see now I have more work to do.
It definitely took us some time and practice (and patience) as well and sometimes it does take a few minutes before we can get it to work. Hope you stick with it.
Blew me away!!! I collected the very old winter dead standing nettel from last year and it looked exactly like your's and didnt work. Big thanks for the link to this vid!!! Waiting for the right season now 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Y’all are blowing my mind! 🔥👊🏻
Always excited to see a new fire making video!
This information is worth a push so i writte a comment to do so :-)
Thx for Sharing
(And If the big Channels dont Link this Video soon, i dont know what to say)
Greatz from Germany
and have a nice Day
opo
Hello from Bavaria, amazing exciting and real good fun when the nettlefibreroll catches a spark...thank you very much ..
Couldnt do it with my springnettle, but i know from harvesting my spindle from a plant called dipsacus silvestris
That the harvesttime matters and did not give Up! In German stinging nettle ist called Brennessel is burning nettle..you did a great Job
Stay safe
Albert Hell
Great video!
Just tried it for about 50 minutes with dried sting needle fibers.. i harvestet them yesterday evening... dried them for 20h in my house..
Maybe i've overdried them?! It just doesnt work o.O
I prepared them for like 15min with my hands... ill let them dry again now for like 1h and try it again 😆
Kind of frustrating to see you beeing so successful 👍
As always thanks for the great video
Ill keep trying ^^
Ps: im from austria and its pretty tricky to not get confused with the words: try, dry, dried and tried 😆
Wow! I will definitely try that. Have you ever tried Japanese knot weed? It’s an invasive plant here in my area. I’ve been removing that stuff for years and noticed that it burns very well went green. Was just wondering.. thanks great video!!😊
nice video
Yes! Thank you been waiting for this!
Now yall need to experiment with fibers and the Rudiger Roll a.k.a. the Fire Roll.
If you need a reliable reference, use BoggyCreekBeast here on UA-cam he was the first to introduce it to UA-cam and has already tested a fair amount of fibers and "accelerants" or fillers.
I believe you could easily use just the nettle and nothing else and get an ember. Could be incredibly useful If you need to make fire and lost your flint and steel.
fantastic info thanks for sharing
Nobel prize 🏆 just saying...
That is really interesting.
You might not remember but we had a brief conversation in the comments last year in your first nettle flint and steele video. We were discussing about the condition of the nettle, old or new.
Now, I tried it again this summer but failed miserably. I used great, healthy, flowering summer nettle, picked around two weeks ago. Immediately peeled it and leaved to dry in sun for a couple of hours. Processed it thoroughly, to get this fluffy bundle. And still, after all that, I couldn't get any of the sparks to ignite it. And there were many sparks. From last year I upgraded to a new striker and got a hold on to real flint rocks. Now it makes me wonder, does flowering have something to do with it? Probably not because you used one as well. But I am not done with this, for sure. :)
I do remember. Sounds like you’re doing everything right. Definitely don’t give up on it. It’ll be a great moment when you eventually get it!
Excellent video can't wait for the next 🔥 video 🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍🌱🌱💥💥
Good info but how about doing an Arizona desert version?
Muito bom
I got some stinging nettle and dried it for a little bit, don’t know exactly, then I worked it in my hands, rubbed by on the finer side of a farriers rasp, then tried it out. No luck. Gonna try it tomorrow but no luck. I’m gonna try some burdock soon though.
Thank you. I will share on FB with my British counterparts and see if they are successful using your prescribed processing methods. I still need to locate nettles in my area but am anxious to try it myself.
That’s great. We’d love to hear about anyone else’s experiences with nettle or other plants.
I am curious as to why winter nettle can't catch spark as well as spring and processed. If would be interesting if you would find winter equivalent to charless flint and steel tinder.
Hello, I have been enjoying your videos lately. I found your information very intriguing. A question that I have can nettles be found in Wyoming. I have been obsessed with bushcraft fire making. It's just not a good day without creating a fire without matches or a lighter. So, with watching your experiments with stinging nettles, I have got to learn how to do this. Where can I find this wonderful plant in Wyoming?
Try this map. Click on Wyoming and you should be able to see which counties in Wy have stinging nettle. Great to hear about your fire making obsession!

Ive tried nettle on two different occasions using chert n steel with a failure each time. It lights with a ferro rod though. Theres something im doing wrong.
I 'll keep trying. 🤔
Can you use other things then neddle to make tinder
Definitely. You may enjoy the discoveries in this video: Flint & Steel Complete "NO CHAR" Tinder List...Declassified
ua-cam.com/video/i1N0voqDk0Y/v-deo.html
I'll have to check out some of your other videos, but have you tried Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus) or Hemp (Cannabis Sativa)? Don't ask me how I know Hemp works.
We did try Mullein but were not successful. Have not yet tried hemp. Thanks for the suggestions.
Do stinging nettle leaves (dried green) work?
We’ve tried the leaves but they did not work like the peeled fibers.
ما هو إسم العلمي لهذه النباتات
Is it faster just to make fire with fire? You still have the process of getting your tinder ready with stinging nettle.I mean don’t get me wrong you don’t like having making fire with fire but the amount of time is needed to process stinging nettle I would rather keep some char cloth on my tinder pouch.👍🏻
Have you guys tried cleavers
We’ve tried about 80 different plants now and made some exciting recent discoveries, but I don’t believe cleaver has been tried yet. We have a lot of it and it would be an amazing addition to the list if it works.
@@wildernessstrong6131 I tried it, goes very hard and straw like when dried, I'm thinking that it might need to be processes fresh first
I'm confused. Do you use the outer skin, the inner part, or both when you prepare it?
We peel the outer fibers off the nettle stalk, then dry and process.
This os absolutely revolutionary, a great survival knowledge and a question arises: did our ancestors know this? Could they have used this for lighting their fires? It surely seems more convenient than charing materials to start a fire. Thank you for sharing!
A great question. It’s certainly been more convenient for us. We love researching and learning what methods were used in the past and it’s especially exciting when we learn that something we’re doing that we thought was original was done way before our time.
Why did you have 30yr old needle. Much less knowing when it was harcested.
Next up: flint and steel without steel.
🤞working on it! 😄
Processed green nettle good, processed dead winter nettle bad! But as a tinder bundle Winter nettle is good?
Have you tried dogbane? I have heard that is also a very good substitute for char cloth.
Yes dead dry Winter nettle will make a great smoldering tinder for matches, friction Fire, and ferro but won’t take a spark from flint/steel consistently unless charred.
We’ve only made a few attempts with dogbane unsuccessfully but plan on trying again in the future.
