- It's our first day in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Siem Reap certainly has a reputation for being the most visited city in Cambodia because of Angkor Wat... but today, we want to explore a more local side of Siem Reap and give you our honest first impressions.

I traveled to Siem Reap with my wife in 2015, in general Cambodia is a nice and friendly country, and we like Angkor Wat very much. Just one thing I felt unhappy was the experience of visiting the floating village on the Tonle Sap Lake. We hired a boat going that Tonle Sap Lake trip. When the boat passed a floating "school of orphanage", the driver parked the boat right across the "school" by a "floating market" without asking us. And he told us we could buy some supply and "strongly" encouraged us to buy large packs (20-50 kg) of rice/flour to donate for the kids in the school. Interestingly, the floating market was full of openly raised crocodiles and pythons, I felt strongly they used this way to threaten/scare tourists.
I was born in China of 1980's (when our country was not rich), I knew very well how some touring business worked in such a situation. And my wife was brought up in an army family, and we did not scare of crocodiles and pythons. Then we insisted not to spend a penny in the floating market and treated those animals as zoo touring. Our "innocence" kept for 30 mins or so, and the driver tried 3-5 times to persuade us to donate, but after then he brought us back to the yard without further touring and an obviously bad face at all (at least he reduced the touring time by 1 hour or so). The point is - when he went further physical threat in the floating market, we might have to buy. We don't want to risk our life just for a pack of rice or so ... ...
So the lesson is - be careful about taking those "lake tour" alone, you feel different when they leave you in a isolated floating market on the lake and force you to buy.
But again, this is the only thing I felt unhappy of Cambodia, in general, it is a very nice and friendly country. I still miss those ancient temples in the forest, as well as the beautiful sunset in the area! I missed the tricycle driver who took us touring Angkor Wat. He earned about 5 dollars a day and his dream was to be able to rent a second-hand car to be a taxi driver. I still remember his happy face when he received the milk and cake as our brunch gift (when we heard he never had lunch during work). However he did not eat them at all, he said his son has not ever eaten cake at all so he would bring them back to share with the family. Though experiencing the difficulty of life, he was always punctual and did not try to charge us for one more penny, what's more was he had always smiles in his face, What a diligent and honest man, I think this is the real face of Cambodian people!
Hope china will help in lifting Cambodia out of poverty as well like it did with it's own people. Though Khmer rouge was supported by china & usa .
I had exactly the opposite experience on the Tonle Sap. Our guide was great, no forced sales and the great sunset. One of my best travel memories.

I was in Siem Reap back in 2011 and really enjoyed myself. I'm sad to see the economy has taken such a hit. I hope the tourists come back and spend money there. The people are so kind and despite everything they've gone through. I hope you visit Angkor Wat as well

Siem Reap! Probably the most touristy place in Cambodia. Probably the most annoying tuk tuk drivers on earth, but this country has gone though some seriously hard times. We hope you enjoy the video ❤
For your knowledge, when you enter the religious building, a sign of respect is to remove the cap from your head, it's always appreciated. I think it's kind of like that all over the world. Great video!

The King first residence is in Phnom Penh Royal place , Siem Reap is only the second Royal residence when his royal majesty visits there. ❤

If you want to see a rural part of Siem Reap or more of how Cambodian people lives are like, I highly recommend visiting a village called "Preah Dak Village". It such a very beautiful place to see, but very underrated ( At least by foreigners).

I went to Siem Reap around 10 years ago but never get closed to the local community. So thanks for showing the places I didn’t explore at all, it’s interesting! For me the tuk-tuk was fine as we basic book one driver for the whole day so no other bothering. Some kids would push for souvenirs but understandable somehow. I bought some postcards for 1 or 2 dollar.
Angkor Wat is amazing to see but personally I liked the most was my visit to Beng Mealea, which is a bit far from the city. This is more of a ruin still and it feels like playing Uncharted in real world jumping on the rock pieces. It makes you feel the time and what time really means for civilizations.
I also went to a Landmine Museum a bit out of town and it was my first real contact with its tragic history. We made a small amount donation though it must be too far from getting the problem fixed. The history needs to be remembered and hopefully it would never happen again.

Hi Luke and Naomi. Glad to see you having fun in Siem Reap. I like the nature and these amazing temples. Even though there’s not much going on in the area, I must say it’s very clean and beautiful. Anyway, I hope you keep enjoying Cambodia but be careful of your belongings like your backpack, if possible put it infront and don’t stay too late at night especially in dark areas. I heard not so nice news happened with my cousin and friends during their visit there. Anyway take care and enjoy. Cheers!

Had a real good Cambodian friend in highschool, I've always wanted to go see it for myself!
I've been to siem reap twice and no bad experiences. Unlike others here I went on the floating village tour and had an amazing time was never borhered. And unlike OP i had 0 issues with tuktuks i found their problems pretty surprising.
32:00 I usually do not bargain and casually buy whatever comes to me that I think fit because it goes to local people anyway. But you do make a very good point. 👍🏼
Tourists shop owners are not poor anywhere in the world unlike independent small sellers .
I used to travel around to experience different countries and cultures, but unfortunately I was impressed by the religion and ritual culture, which were really good, but in the end, when I wanted to stop and rest, I felt the warmth of humanity is the greatest culture and heritage of a place.

So many place to check in Cambodia, I suggested you to stay with long journey in this country.
For the tuk-tuk issues, you just ignore them or make body language with your hands and keep walking. They just try to make a living and it happened to the locals as well.
The king resides at royal palace in Phnom Penh by the riverfront most of the time.

Careful with the tuk tuk, just say no, never say 'later or we'll come back later' then you will have problems with them. They'll insist that you have promised them later. Also the gems street just beware of fake gems and silver wares. Have a Cambodian friend along if you really want to buy some

@@TwoMadExplorers Yeah! it actually happened to me at the hotel, I told the tuk tuk driver there 'maybe later'. He was on me all the time after that I say 'no' then he screamed at me 4 letters words and said that i promised him. I spoke to the hotel owner after then only did he left me alone.
The Siem Reap river actually started off as a man made channel during the Angkor period.

@8:10 the Royal Residence is simply a getaway or temporary residence for the king, whenever he visits Siem Reap. The main Royal Palace is, of course, in Phnom Penh.
@29:50 the market there is called ‘The Old Market’, and at night it turns into a ‘Night Market’. Like most Southeastern Asian countries, shopkeepers try to make a few extra bucks (especially with tourists). It’s a bit annoying, but again, like other Asian countries, you just need to bargain with the pricing.
Some of the very obnoxious things in Cambodia, especially in Siem Reap are the tuk tuk drivers. I could only wish the city of Siem Reap would do something about it.
I’m in Phnom Penh, I’m not sure if you’ve already passed it, if not if you wanna hit me up and I’d like to buy you guys some coffee.

A lot of Cambodians do not walk anywhere, they will ride a moto if they are only going 50 meters. So when they see you walking they think you are strange. Yes talk about all the garbage everywhere.

First one
A simple way to get the tuks to leave you alone is to just learn how to say 'no thank you' in Khmer. They'll think you're an expat and not a tourist and not bother you.
City used to be swarmed by Chinese tourists till pandemic, due to incidents happened to them done by Chinese gangs , Chinese tourists have not returned like before.
You can see pictures and videos of Ankor wat frok few years ago, you wouldn't be able to see a single spot that's how crowded it used to be. Hopefully normalcy will return.
If you are there still. Make video about coffee. It is for sure to be tasty but is forgotten in shadow of Vietnam coffee

Another big business in Cambodia are the private schools and English and Chinese are taught there. If they learn English they know they can get a job and higher pay.

True. My cousin when visiting the country, his phone was snatched when talking photos by 2 guys on scooter. It was around 10 at night. Suggest that they don’t go late at night. (Different from China)
