Most rod bearings have been replaced by now so this problem will soon be forgotten, similar to e39 vanos troubles. F10 rod bearings also fail, the f90 will follow suit.
as a 16 year old in high school, the E92 M3 is my dream car. i've always loved that car, that V8 rumble, the downshifts, the cracks and pops. easily my favorite M3 generation.
LegendInThaMakin it pops naturally from forced induction😂? I’ve driven both and the older is still more fun, gets more attention, and makes you feel like your in a BMW not a spaceship. It’s simple to get a tune for cracks and burbles
As an owner of an E92 M3 ZCP, Yes the engine is so satisfying. On cold starts it vibrates the car and it rumbles. When accelerating slowly it vibrates and rumbles. Sometimes when downshifting you hear the loud pops like a race car, sometimes it happens when you up shift. The v8 burbles but it is very minimal.
As a former E92 M3 owner, I just posted my review of a M4 CS this morning. I agree with your assessment, the F80 M3 CS is a great car but I sure do miss my E92 with a manual transmission
I bought an e90 m3 two years ago and I’ve been through hell and back over it but it is by far the most rewarding car I’ve ever owned. It revs to the moon and the driving experience is second to none. It’s practically a super car on paper that doesn’t need clutch replacements every 10k miles. I’m running mine into the ground and I’ll maintain it the whole way it’s just that awesome of a machine to own and drive daily!
Personally I would choose the E92 M3 as well mainly because it’s only generation of the M3 to boast a V8, but I do appreciate a good inline 6 from BMW, also you can get a manual depending on which iteration of the E90 M3 you get, the design is relatively modern, but subtle imo, and they aren’t as pricey as an F80 definitely not a CS for that matter. Also love the frozen paint work on both M3👌🏾🤓
Wow! You took the words out of my mouth... so well said! I just bought a 2011 6MT and honestly think I’d the greatest all arounder maybe ever conceived.
I own a e92 m3, and im quite happy with your thoughts on it :) a few years ago i managed to snag what i would call the perfect car. Manual Transmission, No dynamic damper control, no Infotainment system and no M button. Only thing i missed on my wishlist was manual seats, but i guess you cant have everything when you arent buying new :D
I had a 2013 M3 competition w the m performance exhaust and it was amazing. But now i have a 2018 M4 competition with the M performance exhaust and its on another level. The F8x series is so nice. But yes the F series needs a good exhaust. I loved my E92 but my F82 is amazing.
Same, owned an e92 for 3 years... it’s crazy how as soon as I got a zcp m4, I didn’t miss my e92 at all. The f82 is better in every conceivable way tbh.
Good review of both cars. I understand the F80 will never be the V8 it replaced, but once you embrace the fact it’s only 6 cylinders it doesn’t sound too bad. I enjoy the “farts” from the exhaust when coming off throttle.
at this point its just cool to hate the f80 exhaust that its kind of gotten way blown out of proportion. In person it sounds fine, yeah its not a V8 at 8000 RPM.
The E92 M3 (now my daily driver) sounds better and has a better road feel than the F80. I also special ordered and owned the E60 M5 when it was new, it sounds the best of all and has the best driving experience - the 50/50 weight ratio was nailed - I still miss it... BTW they are all Manual transmission, "sticks" for total control and high-rev driving
Ive had the pleasure of seeing this exact m3 cs in real life in Westlake Village California roughly one month before this video aired. Small world man.
Imagine paying 90k for a bmw that sounds like farts and wind blowing through a toilet paper roll but less than half the price to sound like a beast and have as much fun
I’m biased , but the F80 is a bit boy racer , E92 looks classy and it’s fast enough , having said that the Naturally aspirated engine sounds amazing . I’ve got the ‘slower ‘ manual version and it doesn’t disappoint . Fuel consumption is high and I’d advise a main dealership warranty but it’s a fantastic bit of history . Very good video , definitely saving it .

That’s what I was wondering. I get it. Everyone loves the sound of a v8..... but literally in the US everyone has a loud v8. I don’t think the e92 distinguishes it’s self enough from all the other NA 8s. In my opinion, straight sixes sound very unique and beautiful especially in the US. Top that off with enough power to roast most American muscle.... that in my book is a recipe for fun.
Hey Parker, what an awesome review and comparison! Thanks for putting it together. Having dreamed of owning an M car back in my 20's when I first laid eyes on an E36, I'm finally in a position to realize my dream and buy one. I've been looking at two - a 2013 low-mileage e92 limited edition in white and another low-mileage 2015 M4 (also in white). I've been on the fence and there's not much difference in price (the M4 is around $4K more). But after watching this, I think that 4.0L V8 wins - how amazing is that sound? Wow!
Having owned both, I’ll take the F80. The E9x is a fabulous car but the tech, power, brakes and interior finish (full Merino leather in mine) in the F80 tilt the scale in its favor for me.
i've owned then sold both. There's no chance i'd pick the E92 over the F80. If i had to ditch my model S and go back to an M3, it would be F80 for sure.
