“All of combat is a violation of expectations.” 👍🏻
“Dogs and cats living together.” 😂

Yeah trained Kali and other Filipino arts for years. Every knife sparring devolved into either tag or a tangled mess. All those beautiful drills out the window. Spent an afternoon with a friend throwing just about everything away for empty hand knife fighting. I use Forward pressure with the "Dog catcher" technique (One hand pointing down, the other up, elbows touching, like a pair of scissors.) Crash the knife arm with forward pressure, get control of the knife arm,and do whatever throw and or maiming technique presents itself after control is established. Of course, if I have distance and can pick something up from the environment, I can do a one and a two (X pattern,) on the attackers blade hand while I keep distance, but that's a different range and a different scenario. It may change into the "Dog Catcher" technique if the attacker breaks my distance control, etc... The bottom line is knife fighting is messy. Use and practice something simple, and avoid it at all costs for real.

I say probably not, if you’re already cut, stabbed, bleeding profusely out of your eyes or nose, grappling with a determined attacker. I practiced HEMA knife for some time and just the stress and minor pain in a competition setting makes regular things difficult.

I disagree. I’ve seen it numerous times in real situations but you have to train according to your experience.

@@systemacanada I have no real world knife fighting experience whatsoever so I’ll defer to you

@@anonymousbosch9265 I’ve had a half dozen experiences working security. Mike has much more from SWAT but nevertheless you need to train what makes sense for you. Our point here is not to say that it’s likely , only that it’s possible and assumptions in training or worse still rules like: you can’t do that-can increase the chance of our expectations being violated and us being surprised

@@systemacanadaThat is more unbelievable. Like saying i have been in so many gunfights but still here.

@@Bible-Christian no one is saying that. We’re saying this is our experience. Training with confidence that someone will never or can never switch hands is a big assumption taught by many that doesn’t match our experience. We’re saying we see hand switching all the time in high pressure testing and we”ve seen it in real world situations. Moreover, far beyond our personal experience, there are many documented accounts of hand switching. This has nothing to do with our ability-rather it’s the probable capacity shown by average attackers.

Train ugly, that's why martial arts fail by applying muscle memory solutions instead of dealing with what's in front of you in that second.

Most people cannot trick change hands in a knife fight... but a few? Can do ANYTHING with a knife. I know in wooden sword training ive had dude grab my 1 arm with both of his arms and I just dropped the sword into my other hand instantly and got a free kill point. (I like to wrestle over the sword sometimes just for fun in training)
