Back when I was a kid in the 50’s and 60’s in upper East Tenn, ,when I’d go hiking with the Boy Scouts or just my friends , we’d find stills out in the woods . Sometimes we’d hear that thumper going and we’d turn around and go another way as they didn’t like it when people showed up when they were working. I had a friend whose Uncle made shine and now I wish I’d gotten him to show me how to do it . Good Video. Brings back memories

For the men that would come and cut the Hay on Dad & mum cow farm.

It's a damn shame that old school's contents got erased and they renamed to old school grower instead of still old school. That was a fabulous reference channel, as is this one.

Hell yeah!!! I'm a admirer of the old school at 44 now and always have been. The greatest lessons I've learned were taught by older gentlemen.. I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with us so that we can hopefully continue the old ways and by doing so previous generations never go anywhere and stay relevant

You cut a v in the end of the pipe that's in the Trumper that let's the vapors escape into the liquid it heats up the liquid doubled distills it .I was thought this method 40 years ago by old-timers in the woods one setup that most ppl never seen is slobberbox .

Reminds me of great and great great granddads discussing whiskey making. Great great died in1959 age 100, greatgrandad died at 87. They used malted wheat and barley. Hard to find sheetcopper these days. Think I will have to build a still. Thanks for the memories. I do remember them talking of building a hidden tank on farm truck. Never got caught. They also made white lightening,sugar yeast water. They used charred oak strips to quick age the whiskey.

It’s great to see the old pros sharing secrets. Question? You talked about methanol. Isn’t methanol wood alcohol? I thought were trying to get ethanol. But thumpers are not that obvious so it’s great to see how this works.
I'm a beginner and I want to tell you thank you for your information thank you for putting it where I can understand it I'm a backwoods country boy and I have to actually do something to understand it's better if I put my hands on it to do it I will learn a lot quicker and I'm now beginning to understand what a thump keg does I sure didn't start with but but can you add anything else to the thump keg for flavor

love the barrel thumper,how did you build that?
I bought it from etsy. It's a 10 gallon that had 100% corn likker aged in for 3 years
Good information on the slow heat up, that's the best way.
You talked about how long or deep/position the vapor arm of the pot still goes into the thumper can you also discuss the length and depth/position of the vapor arm that comes out out the thumper and goes into the condenser.

A couple of questions; Copper pipe size into and out of the thumper are different size. Why? Also, at what point does the thumper get too full of distillate, creating a pressure buildup in the main pot? Thank you!
145F-155F is in reference to the temp in the boiler not in the top of column correct?
Good stuff.. Does it do any good to use foam plumbers insulation on that horizontal arm going to the thumper to maintain temp going to the thumper?
Yes, I've seen people use those foam water noodles too.
Would it be possible, to have a peated Barley only recipe?
Absolutely, my recipe is half cracked corn half malted corn. You could have all peted, half malted or any combination you want to chase the exact flavor you want!

Yep you can run without a thumper, and yep you run it twice

@@jbrown1971 gotta let room for flavor, I could run a 1.080gravity with dady yeast and get same thing. I'll take flavor over proof, the extra work to run it twice is time well spent
@@PoppaLongroach why when I'm Geting high proof and full flavor with one run I'm running 100 year old recipe that was my grand pas one grain I use a d I'm sure you heard of it hog shorts most shiners now never heard of it makes the achol context super high.

I heat my 5 gallon still to temps in about 2 hours.....I take the first 4 ounces out as heads....too lsow?

I put high shots in it. 1/2 gallon of 150 to 160 peoof

When running corn liquor can you put corn in your thumper for added flavor?
Yes you can.

@@johnpaxton1549 I would use corn from the mash. If you use fresh corn be sure to soak it overnight.

Question for ya. The money I spent on this 20bgal pot still I am not impressed with the thumpernsize. I'm guessing it is 2 gal or under. I have an old Keg I want to use as a thumper is it bad to use that size thumper with a 20 gal
A 2 gallon thumper is too small for a 20 gal still. A 5 gallon still would be the minimum size. 10 gallon would be the top end side. I think a 15 gallon keg might be larger than needed, but I would try it before I ruled it out.

Old timers sure can tell a story. Too bad so much of it just flat out wrong. Tell me the methanol story again grandpa, that's my favorite fairy tale! And if you don't put me to sleep, tell me again what temperature the mythical methanol distills at? Lol, just no. How come nobody is calling him out? Just because he's old?
I agree with you about the methanol, but old beliefs die hard.
The thoughts of methanol have been all wrong. It is produced the entire distillation process with the highest quantity being the tails. NOT the foreshot. Also not enough is produced to be harmful. Blindness and other issues came from people using lead and radiators in still making.
