Awesome! I'd love a more detailed breakdown, particularly adding distortion for NIN type sounds 🙂

First things first, pick an instrument and stick to it. Piano will give you the most versatility as most midi controllers are keys, which will allow you to play any instrument as long as they have a vst. Also, music theory is based off the piano and way way easier to interpret musical concepts when using them in conjunction.
Next, music theory, the process of learning it will give you a direction and just by experimenting with various concepts will give you a good idea of how to create music. Music theory is a tool though, as time goes on you'll find your sound just by experimenting and appreciating the results. Beyond that, learning about mixing and mastering will allow you to actually record, arrange, and produce a track.
Don't be like me and try to learn to many things at once, because it'll be a slow, arduous progression that some times kills motivation. If there's one thing I could differently, it's stick with one concept/instrument, then see it to the end. Drums were one of the instruments I ended up doing this with. Didn't do anything else and just practiced that 30-1hr a day; within a year, I felt pretty comfortable. Now I'm learning how to play piano and guitar, but honestly, I'm planning on setting one down to focus on the other, which I'll probably focus on piano for the reasons stated above.
