Global emissions are reaching record levels and show no sign of peaking. The last four years were the four hottest on record, and winter temperatures in the Arctic have risen by 3°C since 1990. Sea levels are rising, coral reefs are dying, and we are starting to see the life-threatening impact of climate change on health, through air pollution, heatwaves and risks to food security.
The impacts of climate change are being felt everywhere and are having very real consequences on people’s lives. Climate change is disrupting national economies, costing us dearly today and even more tomorrow. But there is a growing recognition that affordable, scalable solutions are available now that will enable us all to leapfrog to cleaner, more resilient economies.
The latest analysis shows that if we act now, we can reduce carbon emissions within 12 years and hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C and even, as asked by the latest science, to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Thankfully, we have the Paris Agreement - a visionary, viable, forward-looking policy framework that sets out exactly what needs to be done to stop climate disruption and reverse its impact. But the agreement itself is meaningless without ambitious action.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is calling on all leaders to come to New York on 23 September with concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020, in line with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent over the next decade, and to net zero emissions by 2050.

I went to see Greta's speech. I was very motivated. I decided to ditch vehicle altogether. Right now I am still walking to reach home. Your response is a templatized one, used by many people who find it too hard to face the reality she is presenting, and are too lazy to take action. It's pretty much the "why bother?" template. Why bother accepting the uncomfortable reality of anthropogenic impact on the world. Activism, The Inefficient Solution
Activism is a large part of the political world these days. People participate to help bring attention to issues, and show their support. But despite the idea behind activism, I'm here to explain why when it comes to modern activism, we’re not coming out ahead.
I want to start off by analyzing a current activism icon, Greta Thunberg. Greta is a 16 year old from Sweden who has recently garnered large amounts of media attention from her speech at the Young Climate Activists summit. First, we need to understand why Greta got the attention she did. Her speech at the summit, was short, full of emotion and called out politicians who continue to do nothing about our growing climate change problem. These are things that our media eats up in general, the speech is short, so it's easy to repost and rewatch, it’s full of emotion, so people can feel interested and connected to Greta and finally, it calls out all activists #1 enemies, politicians. Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t necessarily bad things, but they are distractions. This is where I dive into the downfall of activism. People have described Greta as “the embodiment of modern activism”, meaning what she does is fairly similar to what most activists do. And at the root of it all what did Greta do? She complained. She stood on a podium and talked about how awful climate change is and will be, then she left. And that satisfied people. After hearing what Greta said, no one continued to care what other people at the summit had to say. Greta took the attention from children who had invented a strain of algae that would eat the plastic in our oceans, she took the attention away from a group trying to publicize carbon-panels, she took attention from the solutions. The sad part of it all is, after 20 minutes of research, I was unable to find the name of the kid at the climate summit who created the algae, and chances are, before I brought that up just now, over half of the people in this room didn’t know about it. What I'm getting at here is that modern activism is emotional and media-friendly, but because of things like the media, everyone's attention is focused only on the emotion packed speeches like Greta’s, and not the things that are being done to solve the problems we complain about so easily.

Lot of people attacking the speaker rather than the argument here. If you disagree with what she says, then produce a countering argument. Personally attacking the speaker only gives the impression that you don't know enough about the topic to produce an effective counter argument. Go away, research the topic (using peer reviewed sources, News outlets are biased) and then comeback and share your opinion. Avoid letting your emotions hinder your ability to properly debate.

She knows that she's privileged, she pointed it out herself, and her point is that if her dreams and childhood have been stolen from her because of climate inaction, just imagine what it must be like for people who don't have the same privileges. It's terrifying. People have nowhere to go. The climate crisis will only get worse. People will become increasingly desperate. People will flood other countries looking for basic needs because they no longer have their basic needs covered. Our food supply will start to run out because the oceans, air, land is polluted. The technology is there but our government aren't passing/enacting laws fast enough to save us from ourselves. And that is not likely to change anytime soon which the point of all of her speeches and movement. She is 16 years old and instead of going to school and doing normal things, her childhood is speaking in front of the UN, marches, fighting for awareness and climate action. In eight years she'll be 24. and it will be too late. All of this generation has to live with the repercussions of the baby boomer generation putting their heads in the sand for decades. We knew what would happen back in the 70s and we did nothing. That's why she's angry.
