I second that emotion. Mr. Stout your arrangements are so fluid and you could not pick a better style to perform. This big band jazz will never go out of vogue as long as you continue to influence guitar players.
Love Jonathan Stout! His playing is just fun & joyful! Found a "39 one of these in natural at a local shop. It was on consignment at a super bargain XX dollars, but the owner's widow would only take cash. I flew down to my bank, made the necessary withdrawl and burned rubber getting back to the shop before it closed. Beautiful instrument; and like most period archtops very LOUD! Happy Birthday to Jen and John!!
I'd love to see some photos of it! Is there a way you can share them? I too found a gem of an L-5 and there's just nothing like having "the real thing" right? It's such an iconic guitar. Congratulations, albeit a little late!
Not just a good sounding guitar but great playing too Jonathan. Happy birthday Jen and John. You really are the star of the show behind the camera Jen. Awesome video work.
I actually have a 35 L-5 Custom, my dad got it in the early 70's and had been thru a fire, the pickguard got melted to the top. He sent it to my uncle in California who had it refinished. But in the hands of a master, they sound great, but not so good when I play it!🤣
This is one of those rare guitars I'd enjoy seeing all your friends [and employees] who play the guitar of the day, play. I'd love to see Bonamassa, Geissman, Rogo, etc. play a few tunes on this amazing guitar.
Happy Birthday, Jen! Happy Birthday, John! I hope you had an amazing birthday today. That's some sweet playing from Jonathan Stout on a very sweet instrument.
Not that familiar with Mr. Stout's style of early jazz musicianship. But, after watching this video, I have to say the he's one hell of an incredibly talented acoustic guitar player. The two pieces of music that he played here, especially the last one, were stunning. I'll definitely be looking for his music. Thanks to Norman for fostering such a unique online music experience. Your "Guitar of the Day" videos are a priceless treasure for the layman like myself who is not a musician.
Happy Birthday Jen !!! n Happy Birthday John (the most underrated guy in Norman Rare Guitars) Ownstanding videos, from Jen and all these wonderful instruments.Today's Gibson L5 played by Suburb player. Guitar of the Day makes my Day !,
The combination of a great player plus a great carved top vintage instrument with carrying power and tone in equal portions equals a sublime post. F-hole Friday indeed!
Man, can Jonathan play! He honors legends like Charlie Christian, Les Paul and Django. He's employed as a tech, but they can play too. Reminds me of when I saw Chicago and Little River Band in 2000. LRB's bass player/ frontman joked that they were so cheap they drafted their guitar roadie for "Hang On" and "Nightowls". I say it was awesome. Wish Chicago had done so when their legendary tech was still with us
Stout is perhaps the only acoustic archtop player (and musician besides Winton Marcelus) who understands and can capture the feel of early American jazz and deliver it to modern ears. But Stout does it all on vintage 30's archtops. He is also an encyclopedia on just about everything there is to know about vintage Gibson technology and methods. His knowledge is mind-blowing and probably equals that of college professors in their fields. Plus his interpretations of vintage jazz on guitar surpasses anything in record archives since recording equipment then was not like now. He is a living museum of a long bygone music era. You can turn on a radio anywhere or buy an album to hear what classical music would have sounded like live, but the same is not true for jazz from the early jazz era. And for not Stout, we would probably never hear what early American jazz era compositions would have sounded if guitar players back then had been proficient enough to play them.
And I forgot, all those collectors out there who can't play but have hoards of archtops in display cases and vaults only to show off their collection or keep as investments .... Well, Stout is no doubt guitar poor but can actually play. It just doesn't seem fair.
@@whimpypatrol5503 But just as you said - you dont need a vintage gear to make great music .. 🤫 At the very least - those rich collectors preserve great old instruments in good shape - for next generations

Sounds great here in Philly, Jonathan, I’ll absolutely be buying your chord melody course and anything else you’re selling. I wish we could have a couple hours of you at Norm’s!

That does not have a pickup in it, you should do a sound engineering episode every now and then to show how to mic what you need in a board mic preamp etc.
Johnathon is a Superstar who clearly arrived in a Time Machine, his playing puts a smile on my face instantly. Very cool .
Jonathan Stout is a guaranteed thumbs up every time!!!

That’s amazing. Jonathan is a true gem today to preserve and teach this style of playing.

This guy can really play. He's not just some guy playing a pentatonic minor every which way up & down the board. A true musician.
heyyy ive made hundreds of dollars playing one position pentatonic scale!!
He plays that guitar the way it was meant and done in 1935 😉

Brandon’s natural panache in front of the camera is a huge plus to the NRG. Love the whole sha-bang of this channel!
