Thanks to youtube video recommendation algorithm 🥺 it's been a long time since no one making videos on these topics! I'm currently studying BIomed Engineering in Taiwan and planning to study phD at UC Berkeley. Of course, before I clicked your channel, I didn't even know how to get into the right path to study higher degree In the states. Keep doing man! Your information is so helpful. Thank you so much!😇💪🏻
Interesting videos! I'm not even planning to do a PhD atm. I'm currently working as a software developer and have a master's degree. I think these videos are great. I think you could talk about all kinds of things.
I honestly dont think its worth it to do postdoc anymore, like, Im 28 at best when finishing my phd, I NEED a stable job with a decent salary, Im no longer a kid in their early twenties with no obligations, im a adult looking for a house and a stable income to support my family, whatever form that family may have, I literally have spent 1/4 of my productive life studying, I dont need temporal positions with little pay
Awesome stuff! I have a silly question: what would you say if I am considering going back to graduate school (master's then phd) at the age of 29? I'd obviously miss out on a lot of financial earning potential, but I have always been interested in research and attempting to advance a certain field through research. Thanks!
No I don't think it's ever too late to go back to grad school if you think it will help you advance and it's something that you would like to do! I've known a few people who have entered the program at that age so it's not unheard of. Thanks for stopping by!
I’m a 40 year old PhD student. I’m 😅n academia and non-profit and the only reason I am obtaining a PhD is for career advancement. Personally, I wouldn’t do a PhD unless you need it for career advancement. Otherwise it’s expensive!
Hey Jon, thanks for the video! I recently got accepted into a PhD program at a top 30 institution in the field of Mechanical Engineering. I do have plans to pursue academia after (postdoc, and then a professorship potentially). I noticed that the new faculty hires for a lot of institutions are from the top 10-20 universities. Does this mean my chances to potentially join a faculty are doomed, or at the very least, significantly lower?
Hard to say. I think for the field you study, it is easier to get noticed if you work for a professor who is well known in that particular field. It is not necessarily the ranking of the University itself, but how well known the school is for what you work on. That being said, great talent can come from anywhere and you have a shot no matter what school you come from, if you are able to do good work.
Hello Jon, first of all thank you for creating such platform. I've a question for you. What do phd students do during summer season? Do they only focus on their research and academic stuff, or they hangout sometimes?
Hi Shassatha, a majority of phd students do spend time continuing their research. However, occasionally, they do get slated to do other things, such as internships or teaching a summer session. This is also something the student needs to work out with their advisor. Cheers.
hey Jon, very informative video, i am currently doing MS in experimental and Clinical Neuroscience and want to persue Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience or any field related to neuroscience, after that i want to go in industrial jobs, could you please comment that whether field of neuroscience would help me grab an industrial job in future.
Hey Jon!!!!Your videos are damn interesting man!!I'm an undergraduate in computer science field now , my persuasion and passion is doing research in computer science. I'm interested in fields that includes psychology ,human behavior with computation .What filed should I choose ? Also I'm not interested in teaching .Could you please give me some suggestions.
That sounds very interesting! I'm not super familiar in the psychology field but I recommend asking some of the professors in your school's psych dept to see if they are doing any interdisciplinary work that would allow you to leverage your CS background. All the best!
Hey Jon. Great video as always.Thanks. One question, is there any way to know your chances of getting accepted at a PhD program at a university which would allow me to shortlist professors and universities? Do let me know if you have already a video on that? Thanks
Hi Jim, do you mean selecting your profs? Some schools have rotation program that allows you to rotate between profs your first year and you can select advisors based on that. I also have a video of choosing a PhD program, if that also helps answer how to pick a school. Hope this helps.
Can anyone tell me how to apply for a Postdoc after PhD in commerce from a central University? Or are there any positions open now? Any country would be fine.
Usually people would like to go into top ranking University under famous Professor for a Postdoc. This type of people are usually very intelligent and can do well in a big competitive lab, these Postdocs will return their country and become a research leader. If not fit into above category, people usually would do a Postdoc in a country, which you would like to settle down or get faculty position. There is a lot of Postdoc position out there, but Postdoc is hired by PI, therefore connection is important. Or apply a Postdoc Fellowship with a PI that you would love to work with.
Ok, thanks for answering. Actually I was asking it for my sister, luckily she just got selected for ICSSR post doctoral position but can't do, as she is teaching on contract now in a state University. So let's see for future, may be ur advice works.
hey thanks for your content. there are very few content creators for EE and you are one of the top, i imedeately subbed lol. Just wanted to know what were your stats for stanford PhD admission. I understand if you dont want to tell, but please give a general average stanford profile if possible
Yes, I do know several people who work for a few years between college and PhD. Sometimes, it can even help provide you some new valuable perspectives before returning back to school!
Ah interesting. I think I knew one person who went to a national lab right after the PhD. I think she said in her case, it was similar to industry with a lot of security clearance involved. However, I don't have too large of a sample size to say if this is generally the case. I think some of your profs might also be knowledgeable of such experiences and might be able to give a better answer. Thanks for reminding me.
Haha. I was gonna keep it a surprise for a future video if you don't mind waiting. However, you could shoot me an email also if you like through the channel. Thanks for stopping by.
Jon is the cutest PhD holder I have ever seen😍😍
Haha I'm flattered! I hope you found the video useful.

Thanks Jon, This is very useful video for me ,I am planning to do my PhD in Machine Learning !!
Glad this helped. Best of luck on your studies!
Startup is the way to go as in my country industry is pretty much nonexistent and looking for job would almost 100% chance ending with bullshit jobs
Wow, interesting.
Needed this video - thanks for addressing the topic!

Hmmm. That's me right. Age 29 and considering masters degree. Masters should be doable. PhD who knows?

I am doing a masters degree in one of the top universities in France. Have you ever stepped upon phd students who did their masters in france?

Probably in developing and testing of drugs

The name for the field is: Human-Computer-Interaction or Computational Neuroscience or UX Design
Hey Jon. Great video as always.Thanks.

Does PhD from top school matters vs like top 40?
Hmm, I would say what you work on at the school is more important than its actual ranking. Talent can come from all different schools. Cheers!

How much is the total cost for the program (for the Ph.D. program)? Do you have a Ph.D. degree? What is your email address? July 19, 2021.
Great content but also wanted to say...how cute you are
Haha thanks. I am also glad that the content is useful to you!
Is it common/reasonable to take 2-3 years off after undergrad to work and then do a PhD after that? Thanks for your videos!
Yes, I do know several people who work for a few years between college and PhD. Sometimes, it can even help provide you some new valuable perspectives before returning back to school!
Man you should be actor or something
I think I want to work at a national lab. Does what you said about academia apply to that as well?
