Anthony Monaghan is from the beautiful West of Ireland. Due to the poor economy, he had to leave home at the age of fifteen in search of work abroad. After many hard years, he found success in America and earned enough to buy a house back in Ireland. Nonetheless, he was evicted and, once again, did not have a home in his homeland. Now, he is going back in search of answers. He travels the country and talks to Irish people from all walks of life, from a homeless Dubliner to John McGuinness of the Irish Parliament. My Ireland exposes the corruption behind the displacement of thousands of Irish people through economic migration, wrongful evictions, and the homeless crisis. It tells a story shared by countless men and women who, like Monaghan, lost their homes in Ireland.

I run a business and my wife is a designer working for a reputable firm. We have no dependents and no loans repayments and yet we can get a mortgage. The bank told us our ability to pay 1700 a month on rent for over 7 years isn't an indication that we could repay a mortgage of 900 euros. Planning to sell up and move abroad within next 12 months. I love my country but by god do I hate the c**ts in charge. I've paid taxes since I was 16 and yet we can't afford a home.

It’s obscene. Criminal actually. My American kids in their 20’s own their own homes. My son and his fiancée bought a 4 bedroom house in Connecticut one year out of college with almost no money down and yet my highly educated nieces and nephews from Ireland have had to immigrate for the reason you mentioned. Even with €80,000 to put down and great jobs my niece and her boyfriend could not get a mortgage. That’s just insane. Now they live in Canada. My other niece has moved to Australia and my nephew is in Belgium.

Indeed i live here and we are living day by day. I have a wife and two small kids. We are living in a freezing cold extremely damp house that we rent. Since winter set in the house is also now infested with mice.
I really believe owning a house should not be a luxury for the well off. It should be a basic right. After all we are all just looking after the property for a short time we can't bring it with us.

That's our free market for ya.
€400 per month used to be considered reasonable. Rent sould never be more than a quarter or one third of our monthly pay. But the pressure to not wind up homeless or back with the parents is so high - that alone gets exploited, cause we're such a good country for investment.
I'm sharing €900 per mo too out of €1800 for a 2 bed flat. And everyone I know said I found a bargain. ...
It is ridiculous. It's the market. 85% 9f residencies in Dublin are for rent! It's the hollow lie of jobs and prosperity and "foreign direct investment" that nobody knew they were asking for.

I'm the only person I know who's seen this movie and it's been released years now. If the man behind the film had any brains he would make it free on UA-cam for every Irish person to watch and make money from the adverts. That ship has sailed and this will be another movie that could have had an impact but achieved very little..... Apart from a bit of ego stroking by showing it at artsy film festivals.

@@empressironbladder8942 This film could have been relevant years ago, the film maker clearly doesn't understand if he wanted to make an impact he should have put it on YT free for anyone to watch. • @StNick119
      @StNick119 2 роки тому

I won't argue for or against making the movie free on UA-cam, but it sounds like you think ad revenue is much bigger than it actually is. It varies greatly, but one figure I got from the article "What is the Approximate UA-cam Ad Revenue per View?" on ViewsReviews is that it can be less than 2 cents per view per ad.
If that were the case for this guy, if all 5 million or so people in Ireland watched it once, and the movie had one ad, he'd only make about €5,000. Meanwhile, if people paid, say, a fiver each to see it in cinemas or to get a DVD or to stream it, then he'd only need 1,000 people to see it to make the same amount.

I can remember this happening in the late 80’s- early 90’s. Everyone I knew left for England, Canada,, US, Australia or South Africa. Ireland repeating the mistakes of the past. When will things change? Kids are living with parents in to their 30’s. Our children cannot earn a living wage. The cost of rent is as high as SF, or NYC. There is a huge problem. The taxes are very high. Our kids and a friend tried to rent a house on the south side and the owner requested that the parents sign the lease as guarantors. It is disgusting.

Rent in Dublin is much higher than NYC. My daughter lives in Williamsburg Brooklyn and her and her friend have a huge apartment, 3 enormous bedrooms, a large kitchen, a dining room, two bathrooms and a large patio. They each pay $850 including utilities. The total rent is $1700. My highly educated niece in Dublin could not afford to rent a dump and was living home at 28. She has now moved to Canada. She has a gorgeous apartment in Vancouver which is the most expensive state in Canada and she can still afford to save most of her income. She is willing to live there away from family for 5 years because that’s the only way she can save to buy a house back home. ,

I agree Liam, traveling broadens ones horizons but it should be done by choice. Ireland youth have been chased away for far too long now searching for opportunities. It’s wrong. Our country needs to do better. Why try to better yourself in a country that does not back those who do. In Ireland you need to be very rich or unemployed to have a roof over your head. That’s not right. The ones paying all the taxes are the ones who are penalized the most. It’s why I moved to America, my kids are thriving here but if things were different in Ireland I would be home with my family and friends in a country I love dearly.

In most states even if you are a year behind the bank must work with you to bring you current and let you keep your home. If you become stable they put your arrears to the back end of your loan and bring you current. They are required to do this by law. In Ireland the banks and the politicians are In each other’s pockets and the citizens are left unprotected. Then the banks sell the defaulted properties to the corrupt politicians become land lords and charge astronomical rent. It’s criminal.

A lack of confidence in ourselves lingers still, a type of willingness to accept systems that are okay, though not as good as they should be. Speak with confidence at your peril. Notwithstanding all the challenging issues we as a country are facing right now, I still believe that living here in Ireland isn't as negative as portrayed by some.
For example; yes, our education and health systems need major improvements; but it is somewhat extreme to refer to them as of "third world" standard?? As someone who has worked in " third world" systems abroad, the flawed, and often inefficient systems that exist here are way superior in comparison.
Homelessness?? Yes, we have to do more to address this; but, let us not delude ourselves. Many factors contribute to homelessness - not just unaffordable rents and government mismanagement.

Around the year 2000s, the problem was close to being solved by this nun or was pretty low. Immigration started up again and homelessness increased. I went to university in Galway and I remember counting at least 6 homeless Syrian looking people on door inlets. And that same year I heard these dumbasses on the news saying they have accepted more refugees to the point of filling up hotels and hostels, and obviously contributing to the housing crisis. 20000 new homes needed. All because the EU is jabbing us with a stick to fill some figures on a spreadsheet. Like bruh, cmon, we need to take our time and build houses. This is just common sense

We have a housing crisis going on, houses are extremely expensive in part because the government is determined on letting the free market roll, investment funds are buying up lots of properties as rental places, meaning young families and people can't afford a home. Families of 4 or 5 people living in hotels because they are homeless. People not able to start families or plan for the future because they can't afford to move out of the family home in they're mid thirties, sometimes 40s.
Public healthcare has been a shambles for a long time and getting worse, nurses are over worked and under paid, and so many emigrate. So we train them up here, then send them on they're way. Elderly people left on Gurney's for 24 hours in a and e departments because there's no one to attend to them.
A project to build national children's hospital went over budget by 2 billion, no one got a slap on the whatever the reason might be, no one was reprimanded.

Wow, its scary to think because we are all free to comment and say what we think, some Irish people think they are to represent their country by being the biggest racist tosspots possible to some foreigners commenting under this video.
This might have been made for the Irish by the Irish,it does not give anyone a right to be disrespectful and cruel to others. As a foreigner, I can say I love this country more than some can even understand and living here means the world to me.
I didn't run away for better opportunities,my country is great and I would be employed back home too. Not to mention I do as much as possible as a citizen for this place. I love this place ever since I learnt of it's culture and history and I have to say I've never been made feel so unwelcome as reading what some people really think of me and my fellow foreign people. I can't believe the hatred and disrespect, call it biggotry against other nations.
Some people here are fixed on thinking unless you are from an english speaking country you are second class. Well screw them all. I love Ireland and real Irish people. The ones who live up to their reputation of being kind and welcoming.
And lastly, this sort of 'if you dont like it then leave' kind of comments are as useful as a matchstick in a house fire. I'm really really shocked at this. Who the f these people think they are? None of them own this country like. You are born here by chance so be glad you like the place you were born in.

@GR Liverpool oh no, sorry if that was not clear. I meant fuck the people who hate me sinply because I wasn't born here😔 by all means anyone can dislike me I accept it,but hatred, blame and vile racist things I don't think me or any other foreigner deserves.
I can only talk for myself but other then my birthcert (which is essentially just a piece of paper) I feel as Irish at heart as any. I always did.
I do see what's going on and it angers me as it would if I would see my country go through this crap. I feel for the people of this country. For the young ones because of their future is limited and for the old ones because they deserve better in their old age. Its madness.

Tax tax and more tax. Say goodbye to the skilled and educated youth just like the 80’s. Not enough people to tax so we increase it and all you’re left with is increasing numbers of social welfare sponges that span generations that have no intent on working an honest day of their lives, give no shit for the crisis the country goes through, the environment or anything else as long as their job seekers allowance, dole, unmarried mothers, rent allowance, child payment isn’t touched but increased in every budget. What do they honestly contribute to society. Foreigners come into this country seeking work to which there is plenty of and are gobsmacked at how easy we make it for these social welfare lifers. Shane on us for not insisting they work and contribute to society and taxation.

Over the past 50 years the cost of housing has increased around 100 fold. Earnings have not increased even remotely close to this. Perpetual debt has become the standard. A common tragedy is that when someone spends half their life paying a mortgage on a home for their family, the home cannot be passed to their children, because the inheritance tax is so extortionate, the house must be sold to pay it.

It's not just governments fault, the people were irrationally exuberant, the greed was rampant, the partyimg without care, the rush for housing, 120% loans people wanted, everyone went nuts and played a party in the global crash. I personally didn't, warned it was going to crash 3 years befure it did, fell out with people, I was a complainer, no fun, fuck then, get what you deserve, don't shoot the messenger. But even after all that, the people voted yes to austerity in the referendum. I'll never forget asking friends and family after how they voted, I was sure it would be a unanimous No, but it was a unanimous yes, dear God the stupidity. I never felt so surrounded by zombies in my life, like an episode of the walking dead. @@johnduggan8398 you could say we have global fascism, pockets rising up in Austria, Australia and many other areas or if not fascist, totalitarian. If you look at the now evident forming of a one Worid government or at least one that is authoritative over many countries and even continents, its imposing itself as a single nation, suppressing opposition, centralising control, and severely regimenting economics and social policy. Its different than 1930s Germany but very similar in many regards. National politics, the nation state and democracy are now tainted ideas that don't exist. The illusion of democracy persists but not the reality. Having locally elected representation means nothing when you have authoritarianism, assuming new emergency powers. Agreed, neo feudalism is rising, but I was warning about that for years also. I live in Ireland, I rented for 4 years, rent increased 15%. I paid it with some difficulty. My landlord, an Irushmen with many properties and driving an 85k land rover, served me notice to leave because the new legislation protecting renters from the ever increasing rent hikes (limiting to 4.5% increase) was brought in. I had to leave, he was within his rights, gave sufficient notice. I had to return to living with my parents, I couldn't find any other accommodation. The landlord raised the rent by 50% as soon as I'd moved out. He was capitalising on people's struggles and the demand. His mortgage on the property was no more than 40% of the rent he was charging. He blamed government levies as his reason for evicting me. He stands proudly at every Ireland rugby match. I do not think this man deserves an Irish passport, he is a traitor to his own and that selfishness and greed is destroying Ireland and many other countries. Its an insatiable appetite for more that the empty vessels of this world can never adequately fill.
