- The Scout is a wide, stable, 10-foot kit boat that's a blast to sail and row. Weighs only
~70 pounds and makes a great tender, yet has enough dry stowage below deck to take on a beach camping trip of its own.
Available as a kit boat exclusively from Duckworks.com. Learn more and order at duckworks.com/...
I came here from Sailing Magic Carpet where Aladino is building one. Looks like a fun build and a nice little boat.
same here!
Us too.
Thank you, and welcome!
I saw that same pair of build videos. This little sailor looks strong and durable. Built for fun. Definitely not trivial to build but the steps look very straightforward.
I think we all are...
I'm not far away. I should check out the kit.
Congratulations DuckWorks, you have pleased the Swiss maestro from magic carpet, and seemingly thereby introduced the whole sailing youtube community to your well designed and practical dinghy.
Thank you very much!
What an awesome video! Thanks for posting. The builder did great job on this boat. Looks like a lot of fun!
Hey thanks Will! Yeah Eric really hit this one out of the park. We all had a blast sailing that day!
If Aladino bought one (Sailing Magic Carpet) you can be sure of the quality.
Thank you -- we're pretty tickled over here by how much he seems to be enjoying his Scout build! :)
@@duckworksboatbuilderssupply ...and the brilliant way Maya filmed it!
@@charlenetownsend8895 indeed!
Reminds me of the Spindrift 10 DIY.😊
Looks like a fun project. Happy sail8ng!
Beautiful lines and sweet looking sail
Thank you kindly
Really nice simple boat. I would love to see more about how the rigging works. Looks like a jib setup rather than a main.
It's a rig based on a windsurfer set up. Bob Pattison from Neil Pryde Sails worked with us to build a super simple and efficient sail, rigged in such a way that is really intuitive, even for novice sailors. We'll be sure to do a rigging video as well as an on the water highlight of her sailing capabilities.
Also here from Sailing Magic Carpet. Aladino is amazing....
Great little boat, reminds me of the Mirror Dinghy of my childhood here in the UK. The simple carbon mast is way better than the Mirror's timber gaff rig. Perhaps some one can help you make another video.
You need to interview Aladino and link his videos.
I also came here from Magic Carpet. Do you have a distributor in Europe ?
Hi! We don't have distributors, but we do ship worldwide! :) You can email us at support@duckworks.com for a quote.
Info on the 14' show kit
That’s a crazy price for a kit
The cost of okoume marine plywood these days certainly hasn't done us any favors. But other than that, you'll find our kits are in line with (or lower priced than) the competition.
Do you ever sell a completed boat?
Bravo! Le même emboîtable 🙂
How much does it cost for the kit?.... Thanks, John, Ontario, Canada
Hi John, thanks for asking. The CNC cut runs $2,099 USD, the whole package, CNC, epoxy/glass, sail rig, hardware and lines costs $4,054 as of 3/3/2023.
Would someone please comment on the use foam as core material in certain places (deck especially). What type of foam is used? Thanks
Good question - it's a rigid and lightweight PET foam. Some parts are make from recycled plastic bottles, others from new virgin foam. The virgin foam is more resistant to denting, but mills a little rougher than the recycled foam does, so you'll find virgin foam on the structural components that need more impact resistance (deck and the transom doubler). The recycled PET is used for the breasthook, gunwale, daggerboard and rudder. Hope that helps!
SCOTT!
Hey Greg, good to see you here!
As a fun thing it looks great (I too saw it on Magic Carpet), but the low freeboard looks an issue...I prefer the nesting dinghy that Sailing Yacht Florence has...
Hi Marc - the freeboard on the Scout is in fact quite comparable to the nesting dinghy that Sailing Yacht Florence uses... and both boats have a typical amount of freeboard for a sailing dinghy in this size range (I don't have hard specs on theirs). When you're using a boat as a tender you don't want the freeboard to get too high or you lose efficiency in your rowing performance, so that's a tradeoff that designers make when balancing both rowing and sailing capabilities. Another consideration is that while nesting dinghies are great if you're short on deck space, keep in mind that they don't offer as high a degree of flotation as the Scout. If you're concerned about capsizing, the Scout is actually better suited for capsize recovery since it has built-in flotation tanks under the deck/seats. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your informative reply. We are looking at which dinghy to go for and want a sailable one. What size motor can you fit to the scout? Thanks
@@marclawyer2789 2hp per USCG, which is all you need to reach hull speed in a small dinghy like this.

Thank you.
I wanted to see the bike & trailer towing it.
I know, missed opportunity! We didn't realize we hadn't gotten footage of it until Eric had already ridden off into the sunset. 😂
