I knew Asia wouldn’t disappoint. If you think this was rough, imagine seeing it in the theater in Dolby Stereo back in ‘79. People were passing out, running out, yelling at the screen. It was insane. It’s kind of normal now, but there was nothing like this before 1979. We weren’t ready.

Just in case no one has shared this, the way the director filmed the alien-bursting-out-of-the-chest scene was brilliant. He told the cast to get close, and the first props were set to go off very weakly, with little movement/blood. The second time they went to film it, the cast got closer like he told them, and then the props went off full. Those reactions were real. The cast was freaked out.

37:00 The signal wasn't to lure anyone _to_ the planet; it was to warn others _away._ If you go back to just after Dallas, Lambert and Kane left the ship and wandered out of communications range, you'll hear Ripley telling Ash that an analysis of the signal they received seemed to indicate that it wasn't a distress call at all but a warning message to warn others to stay away from the planet. Setting up that warning message must have been the last thing the giant alien ship pilot did before one of the creatures burst out of his chest.

Jonesy the cat tried to warn them at least twice. When Brett went to get him he was hiding, hissing & scared. Brett didn't even look behind him till it was too late.
And when Ripley was safely in the shuttle (or so she thought), ready to leave, Jonesy was growling again. He knew the alien was in there.
Whenever there's a cat or dog in a scary movie, they usually try to alert the people...hissing, growling, barking etc. And we silly humans (the characters, at least) ignore them. Just like the characters always split up instead of staying together.
Oh, well. If they didn't do those things I guess it wouldn't be much of a scary movie. Less suspense, less hand-wringing & fingernail chewing.👀🤣

Your adrenaline will be pumping. Very different than part 1, but in a great way. All the other Alien movies, part 3, 4, alien vs. predator, etc, are entertaining for sure, but NONE match the directing prowess of Ridley Scott and James Cameron. Not even close. Also the blood-splattering wasnt told to the actors, so a lot of things indeed came by surprise to the actors. The shock and surprise on their faces are real, and the director kept that footage in the movie, so it feels more realistic, and its even more relatable for the audience. This movie was released in 1979...the year I graduated from High School. The special effects was ahead of anything ever done before it. Another movie that came out the same weekend as Aliens was "Prophecy" starring Robert Foxworth and Talia Shire. If you see Prophecy, you will understand how so far ahead the special effects was. You have to see Aliens which is the next movie to react to. You'll get some answers.

Fun fact: When Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) shoots the Alien (Bolaji Badejo) out of the shuttle, he was sitting on a rolling chair and the crew just yanked him back. When she turns on the engines, it's just lights and water that created the effect.
Bolaji Badejo was a graphic designer from Nigeria and was discovered in a British pub, as they needed someone who was extremely tall and thin to fit into the costume. It was his only role.

Truly a directing lesson, on how to "build up tension" in thriller movies. That's how movies should be made, show as little as possible, but keep pumping up adrenaline and building up right to the finish line.
Right back in 1979 its absolutely INSANE how they made managed to pull this off with the technology of the 70s, and how this still holds up so well even in 2023. Mad quality of film-making. Just MAD. Ridley Scott. What a master. With this and blade runner, he showed everyone what can done in the sci-fi genre in the late 70s-early 80s. What a legend. Even today's films have huge trouble reaching this amount of quality in film-making.

Ash was a android where as an Android works similar to a robot it's an artificial life but all organ's are man made, the brain is a computer and not artificial flesh. But the company planted Ash there to get the life form and bring is back to the company for study at the expense of the crew. Where as a company can write up a work place death story later to cover there ass. And I forget who picks her up on the next movie but in this time period there's hundreds of companies working in space it happens in the not to distant future. I mean space is the last wild west there is. All it takes is one element or alloy to be discovered that the military can't live without and you'll witness hundreds of company's out there in real life. So high probability (without the alien) of course.

I love the setting. A lot of sci-fi up to that point had been of the high-minded type, to put it one way - idealists in pristine ships looking to boldly explore new worlds and such.
Alien was the first to my knowledge to have the crew as more working-class types. The Nostromo wasn’t an exploration ship, but a commercial towing vessel - the crew were essentially space truckers hauling a load of ore back to Earth, wanting to drop it off and go about their lives until the next job came up.
The Company obviously had other plans…

They had a good sci fi with working class characters called "Outlander" with Sean Connery about a cop on a mining colony that came out about two years later. (At least I remember it being good)

A bit of trivia - about that scene where the alien burst out of the guy's chest - none of the actors knew what was going to happen, so their scared reactions are GENUINE! Aliens (sequel is plural) is EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST!!!! Ripley is a Rockstar superhero!

I always fast forward to the dinner scene for the reactions to this. I'm 51. Saw this back in the day on VHS when I was like 11. Scared the shit outta me. Slept with the lights on. Couldn't seep until the sun came up. Epic fear. Your reaction was the best I've seen lol.

This is a Horror classic by Ridley Scott.
The sequel is an action adventure classic by James Cameron.
2 genres based on a theme, but both classics in their own right.
I wish they'd left it at that.

Kudos to whoever edited this. You kept the big jump scares in. I literally yelled out loud a couple of times. My gf was like what the hell are you watching? I loved the fact that you didn't question the obvious outdated technology they are using even though it's taking place in the future. You guys just let the experience pull you in. I love it.

In 10 minutes...you won't need a rocket to fly thru space...is the perfect line. This movie is full of jump scares and drama. All those dark corridors and shadows just makes this the perfect popcorn movie. Too bad you didn't see this in the cinema, back in the day. I never thaought they would make a sequel to this perfect movie....but they did!....Great channel..keep up the good work.

No way I'm going back for a damned cat. A near perfect film though, from music to direction to the design of the alien. Saw this when it first came out with no idea what it was about and the chest bursting scene didn't just make people scream, it put them into shock. In a large, sold out theatre the response was electrifying.

Most Humans put self preservation of themselves, friends and family before everything. Yet there are heroes among us that do not. This is an ultimate hero move. Ripley understands if these creatures get to Earth and multiply. We could be over as a species. She is willing to die to stop that happening.
