Miracolo vocale. Questo ruolo era scritto per lui. Bravo.
This was a singer. Comparing this wit the same Domingo clip i saw yesterday makes me appreciate old voices. The real ones
He gives me chills; what a thrilling sound.
Sherrill Milnes was a great singing actor - perhaps the finest. And we have not heard his equal since his retirement. There were certainly some other great baritones active during the earlier days of Milnes' career. Robert Merrill left the Met in about 1976 and Cornell MacNeil in 1987, by which time Milnes had been there over twenty years, to say nothing of greats from other countries: Capuccilli, Quilico, etc. One can make the argument that this one had the best top notes and that one had the best mid-voice and so on. But no one gave more complete and convincing performances on stage.
The 70s and 80s are the golden age of opera for me. Certainly of Baritones. Adding to your list Pablo Elvira, Ingvar Wixell, and Juan Pons
Fantastic One of my favourite baritones Love his voice ! Bravo 👌👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Istòrico Baritono Verdi. Sempre, sempre, Bravo !
What a baritone. Il grande baritono.
His '72 "Rigoletto" and '76 "Puritani," both with Sutherland, are unmatched.
He sounds so natural with exceptional musicality
Bravo Maestro Milnes!!!!! Haven't heard any baritone sing this so beautifully.
Then you have to listen to Mr. MacNeil. Awe-inspiring!
Grande Milnes 653 perfomances at the met.
Also Cappuccili
@@byronjackson7602 Cappuccilli is great, but Milnes, Guelfi, Manuguerra, MacNeil and Zancanaro are even better!
They are all different and bring a unique quality to dramatic and Verdian singing, as does Bastianini and Peter Glossop as a couple of others.
What I do know is that they are all fine exponents of old school 'bel canto'. Which is in decline both on the stage, training programmes and education.
There are less and less true Verdian baritones emerging.
But that's my opinion. I'm only trying myself.
Too many teachers resort to "listen to the old school" but that's only part of the battle. Not many can teach the tools necessary.
Bravo, Maestro! ❤❤❤
Fenomenale! 😍🥰❣
The best Miller!!
Never better, and I heard him in the house many times.
He is the best! I was fortunate to have seen him in this role at the MET in February 1988: his last performances there as Miller. The last (and one of the greatest!) Verdi baritone.
I heard and saw Milnes as Iago in Chicago in 1985. He was a little past his prime, but the voice was still enormous--
You can see why he was a stare at the Met for a long time!
Imádom!
Bravo!!!
The last great American Verdi baritone.
The last great baritone.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Probably. I was lucky to hear his Macbeth and Rigoletto in London in the 80s. Marvellous. He had a magnificent stage presence too. No one around today of this quality.
Mr. Milnes is truly "in his prime" here (The Met's 1979 "revival" of Luisa Miller. Mr. Milnes perfectly meshes his voice, inflections, and emotions as revealed in his convincing and sincere facial expressions, as he emphasizes the importance that a father's daughter not be tainted by any "macchia." Bravo!
@Barone Except not on the second verse here lol
Is your point that he is ignoring the double ‘t’? I think even a native Italian would have problems given the shape of the music.
Toujours aussi impressionnant Sherrill Milnes !
Bravissimo
It's almost as if this cabaletta was written for his voice! (Can you also upload the aria right before this, "Sacra la scelta"?)
Don't cut videos short at the end---we want the applause and the curtain calls.
The best
I love to notice these little things, but doesn't he mess up the words the second time through at the beginning? I don't know what he sings, but it's not "ah, fu giusto"...anyway, I absolutely love this performance...he is one of my idols
Yes, he accidentally sang, "Ah, tiranno..." Whatever. He's one of my idols, too.:)
@@ILNEMICODELLAPATRIA bravo, concordo.
The Met's last truly great Verdi baritone. Chernov had the potential to be his successor, but did not completely fulfill it.
Agreed Vitellio.
Yes the last true Verdi Baritone.
@@ozielich Actually he is a lyric baritone, but a well-developed one.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Lyric, but still Verdian. Agree with you.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Would you not agree that his instincts for the music were very idiomatic. All the ‘accenti’ are in the right place. Unfortunately the tone eventually deteriorated to the point where it no longer mattered much. But this to me is real bravura singing.
il piu' grande di tutti...x me
Who sings like this these days???
Bravo!
This must be very early - pre-vocal injury. He sounds great.
This is 78, the whole performance is available from the Met, Milnes, Scotto, etc… all excellent, Domingo painful to listen too but it’s worth it for the rest.
2:35: High A Flat
Wonderful interpretation, infinitely better than that show-off Leo Nucci
Pressed, held, uncentered: overrated
