Jack Nicholson's style of speaking should be adopted as the official American accent. No English accent could compete with Jack's confident aged Bourbon undertones.
Damn! Nicely put! 'Bourbon undertones', I love it!
And Michelle Pfeiffer too
I would kill to have a voice like him. Even if he wasn’t good looking that voice would have women following him.
2:15 "If you can live with the humiliation..." That actually sounds like good advice in many respects!
The calmest talking angry man I have ever seen
Jack Nicholson is THE BEST! Also, is it me or does he remind you of John Malkovich in Empire of the Sun?
This man would be first choice at my final supper.
All work and no play makes jack a dull boy

Why there’s no interviews of Jack on Carson or letterman
Because he didn't do any. He never went to any TV show
Do you think we'll ever really get to know Jack
Acting is a genuine lie
YES! Yet, the best actors must be searchers of absolute truth.
it’s crazy how he almost got the lead for godfather and he still thought it would be better for an Italian. man just loved movies
He didn't have the look of Michael
@@hoangngochaivn he'd fit vito more than michael
Jack was spot on for not doing The Godfather /The Sting instead to nail perfectly China Town / The Last Detail. It's a mark of a complete actor to know when NOT to do certain projects. PERFECTION.
Applied to professionals all sorts.
Nicholson is that rare example of a person who is completely comfortable in his own skin. Probably a big part of why he is such an incredible performer
Interviewer: "Why do you call him [Marlon Brando] the 'big man on the hill?'" JN: "Well, he lives up the hill from me."

What does it mean ? I didn't get it.

There's something so admirable about Jack. So cool and down to earth.
Never really saw him talk candidly like that before. Yes he does seem really down to earth there
He's sinister even when he's being courteous. He's one in a million.

People don't get how cerebral Jack is.
Everybody pretty much acknowledges he’s the man, and yet I still feel that underrates him.
I think I do. That's two of us.
"I thought the part in The Godfather should have been played by an Italian"
Holy shit, Jack Nicholson saw the importance of proper representation and actually DID something about it by turning it down, mad respect Jack.
In another paper interview, he said "Back then (70)s, i thought that indians should play indians and italians should play italians....look, a lot of actors could have played Michael , myself included, but Al Pacino WAS Michael Corleone...i cant think of a better compliment to pay him".
Now there is a man who is too cool for school.
I thought he was being interviewed for a job at the overlook Hotel 🏨
How can one man Be so fucking cool
Jack was born, to do what he does ...he has actor written all over him
" I'm a goddamn marvel of modern science." - R.P. McMurphy
This is total self-mythologizing on Nicholson's part. He probably played football in NJ, but he did not grow up with the conventional middle American life. He was the son of two professional stage performers, although his precise paternity is an issue of some debate--again, not normal for middle America. Nicholson keeps his skeletons in the closet so that they can fuel his inimitable and dangerous acting style.
Exactly! He made himself the legend he is now. He believed in the tale before everyone, that’s why it worked so well.
Well thank goodness we have you around David to set the record straight for everyone on UA-cam. Please enlighten us all with another self aggrandizing tale of middle American life.
@@jeffdekimpe1746 You're welcome.
Brando also said the only reason I’m in Hollywood is that I don’t have the moral courage to refuse the money.
Jack sounds like the smartest man who knows he knows nothing. Great voice.
This initially looks to be the time in and around The Shining.
It is! I'm fairly certain this interview was done either on set or immediately after The Shining wrapped.
He turned down The Godfather so Al Pacino can get it that's great.
China Town was a very interesting movie. I'm glad he steered clear of the Godfather.
I think he knew what he was doing. He wanted to be a star. I recall him saying in an interview he knew the moment it happened. He was watching Easy Rider on the opening night, or something like that, and a specific scene in the film caused a reaction in the audience. Then he knew he had made it 😎
This video makes me realize how few film interviews were done with Jack throughout his career.
He’s clearly well read and considered. There’s a cynicism in him which predates acting I think. He’s a great actor.
Thank you, Jack Nicholson, for everything that you gave to the world.

This almost seems like the interview scene in the Shining. His style is so natural it's so hard to tell the difference!
Am I the only one who pauses these videos with 1 second left to avoid the f**king ad at the END of the video?? Drives me crazy
I appreciate the poster putting the ad at the end of the video rather than halfway through but maybe that’s just me
Just skip to the end of the video and then press reload and BOOM no more ads 👍👍👍
The Joker that influenced all other Jokers.
Jack is AWESOME good person to talk to about acting.
The Last Detail is one of the best films he's ever been in. I'm glad he chose that.
You know boy, you’ve got a knack for killing the conversation
My favorite quote from Jack is when he was asked in a Playboy interview, why men divorce so much in Hollywood?…his response was ‘ because men get tired of having sex with the same woman’.
wow so epic he said exactly what anybody else would say
That line about the watch seems like such a throwaway thing to say....but it's actually a profound statement about acting. It's basically everything.
Be in the moment, know your character, find something to do with your hands, and above all, be generous in every way with your fellow actors and crew.
Love it!
"He lives up the hill from me." There's something in this that captures the essence of Nicolson. He can come across intense, but then he's suddenly disarming and direct.
Awesome actor with great voice
Jack Nicholson what an amazing actor and full of wisdom! Have enjoyed all his films... Watched Hoffa recently, he killed it as usual!
I had the privilege of working with Jack on batman. First time we met he called my name out walking to me then hugged me. We talked alone two hours while he shared his Marlboro,s with me then in our scene he directed and said we don't need the director I've been doing this long enough,,, Scott Moy

Jack Nicholson is our (Boomers & up) generation's Humphrey Bogart. A true legend, talent and treasure.
Love Jack 🥰 but Old interview
A parallel universe exists where Nicholson played the Godfather and everyone there is like "No one could have pulled this off but Nicholson!"
He didn’t know that his father was Italian at the time. Donald Furcillo.
@Shoot Me Reviews You’re exactly right because Nicholson is the embodiment and master of realism....sprinkle in a heavy dose of relaxation and that’s how you get one of the most versatile, unique and competent actors of our time.

There will never be another Jack. Damn... he was cool before anyone knew what cool was.

What about Christian Slater?

I don't get it.... Jack was offered to play the lead role in Godfather but one of the reasons he turned it down was because his character didn't have any scenes with Brando??
Which role was Jack offered? And didn't Brando have the lead role??
Pacino was probably considered THE lead, and if you watch the film there aren't that many scenes with Michael and Vito together. There's a good one towards the end but that's about it.
That was GREAT. More, please! Thanks!

I'm 45-years-old and have seen many Jack Nicholson movies and have always enjoyed his acting. I think he's golden, but I don't believe his reasoning relating to The Godfather. I believe that's one movie he wished he'd have said yes to:)
I’ve heard that Jack was considered but Coppola stated he wanted an Italian that looked Sicilian so there was no chance for Jack to get that role, thank goodness.
Jack is the......king.....I just saw one flew over the cuckoo's nest....classic.
Love that film!
Few good men was awesome
Gimme the bat!
I’m probably in the minority but I think Chinatown is better than both The Sting and Godfather. Godfather is way overrated in my book. It borders on boring but Chinatown is good from start to finish
I like The Sting best of those three, i'd probably put Chinatown and the Godfather on par with each other myself. But there are pleanty of movies i'd rather watch instead of these though.
I think the reason why some people say its overrated are because they come from the casual audience.
The Godfather really is not like what movies people are used to seeing today.
When people think of a mafia film, they expect to see some people action, bloody gore, and hear the F-word every 5 seconds, right??
..And that's the thing, Godfather isn't like that. It’s more “realistic” if that made sense. The casual audience today with their short attention span are so used to fantasy movie universes that this movie really wouldn't work for them.
The only successful cinematic universe besides MCU is what? DC movies??
People's tastes have changed overtime, and now people are honestly used to “popcorn fillers” or mindless entertainment that have a lot of action and quips that when they see a 3 hour movie of people just talking about the Mafia world and building characters…. they lose interest and say its boring because of the pacing SMH
Casual audiences dont watch movies to be “enlightened” or “think a lot”, they watch movies to be entertained and laugh and forget about their real problems.
Which is why, according to them,The Godfather is overrated because it has "sluggish pacing" which causes them to not really watch the entire movie.
Me personally? While I dont think Godfather's best movie I ever saw, it is however a GREAT movie that IMO revolutionized Cinema forever.
The script, most of which was written by Mario Puzo, was very, very good. The novel, also good, reads like more of a pot boiler (or “plot boiler”)… Puzo said it was essentially a first draft, which he sent to the publisher, who printed it anyway without a lot of editing. The Godfather screenplay, therefore, was essentially a second draft of the story and is much better for it; it has less emphasis on goofy subplots and instead focuses almost entirely on the story of Don Corleone and his three sons (four if you count Tom Hagen).
A man and his three sons? Sound familiar? It should. Because it echoes what some people consider the greatest drama ever written: King Lear, Shakespeare’s tragedy about a king and his three daughters, all vying for power.
As a novel, The Godfather reads a little like a cheap thriller at times, although certainly a big cut above other crime novels, because of its insight (thanks to Puzo) of the actual workings of the Mafia.
But as a film, with the enhancement of 1) Coppola’s insight, 2) Puzo’s revisions, and 3) Brando’s performance, not to mention Pacino, Robert Duvall, and others… it becomes positively Shakespearean in its feel. It feels like grand opera, with its eternal themes of family, loyalty, betrayal, revenge, and power. Except it’s realistic and believable.
A final observation: The Godfather has one of the greatest musical soundtracks in film history. Godfather II has a soundtrack that’s even better, as it incorporates musical themes from the first movie. But I have an observation about this: It seems the greater the film itself, the more it inspires the composer to rise to a level of greatness. You almost never hear a great soundtrack to an otherwise unmemorable film.
@@Tusc9969 Wow that's certainly a long message. Possibly the longest comment i;ve seen on youtube. I'll just say yes there is still a fair amount of swearing in the Godfather mostly courtesy of James Caan. I preferred the sequel alot more than The Godfather, I thought Brando's performance was overrated.
Well, you (the interviewer) can‘t handle the truth.
He's lame...him wasn't even a nice old mean old uncle grandpa ok...
Here is something I think everyone should learn in their Early twenties. Everybody is an actor.
Acting is a confidence to be and a courage to explore yourself, for an audience. And then there is more or less 'mastery' over it.
PS : 3:39
.And yet when he was in Doctor Spivey's office in Cuckoo's nest he kills a fly by pounding the his fist on the desk. The actor playing the doctor said there wasn't a fly. And he did Prizzi's Honour, breaking his rule about Italians playing Italians.
He didn't say he had a rule about Italians playing Italians. He said he wanted an Italian to play Michael Corleone.
As far as the fly, fair enough, but Jesus Christ, you don't have to be THAT exacting. Nobody is 100% consistent
@@sguraya7223 I accept your correction relating to the Godfather. But with all the girls giggling in awe and nearly clapping when he made his 2.17 watch comment, my fly still doesn't exist.
@@scottypersia5715 Yeah but, like I said, no one is 100% consistent
@@scottypersia5715 your fly? How do you know the other actor just didn’t see the fly. It is after all, a fly. And improvisation is not actually the opposite of realism, if you do it realistically, which Nicholson did. I believed there was a fly there.
