Incredible that O Brother wasn't mentioned even once, even though it's the only Coen film besides Lebowski whose soundtrack got any sort of recognition. That had to have been deliberate.
This was especially fascinating for me because I've been composing and arranging music since I was 16 years old. I'm now 68 and have been a Coen bros. freak since "Raising Arizona" was first released. Such a pleasure to see and hear Carter Burwell for the first time, too.
This is also the longest Joel and Ethan have ever tolerated this type of format to my knowledge. They are without peer.

I believe that Malcolm McDowell actually improvised the "Singing in the Rain" bit after Kubrick was dissatisfied with the way the scene was playing and suggested McDowell try singing something to amp up the sociopathic cruelty of the character of Alex casually and lightheartedly committing a horrific violent rape. Apparently "Singing in the Rain" was the first thing that came to mind to which he knew all (or most) of the lyrics. I've also heard Gene Kelly was disgusted by the use of his signature tune in this way and angrily refused to speak to McDowell when the two later met at an event.

It's their biggest box office hit by far, was critically acclaimed, received multiple Oscar nominations, was nominated and won many other international awards...and to you that's "really unappreciated"?

They left out some of the movie clips, some important examples of the video's subject. I assume this is because of copyright issues. Why? The Coen Brothers agreed to the interview and the clips would encourage people to see the whole movie.
Some of these copyright restrictions are ridiculous.

Quite a sobering production tale from Baldwin and Coen Bros. about popular music (particularly classic rock) being prohibitively expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the budget of films like _Goodfellas_ and _Casino_ went directly towards securing rights to all of that music from the Stones, Who, Devo, Carlo Buti, etc.
It depends upon whether a director (or whomever) goes for already super well known songs - which makes their film more immediately accessible to viewers ie basically a very commercial, crown pleasing source; or whether they select much less obvious popular songs. Also, as Quentin Tarantino put it - they turn up the soundtrack to create a false energy, or a period feel.
And also hope to MAKE money by flogging 2 CD soundtrack sets.
Or they could do things differently, and much more originally.
Take Pulp Fiction, for example.
The ENTIRE budget for the film was $8.5m To give context, made in the same year were
Dumb & Dumber budget $17m
Shawshank Redemption $25m
Forrest Gump $55m
And Forrest Gump used popular music. REally obvious popular music eg
Aretha Franklin's Respect
Creedence CR Fortunate Son
Elvis Presley Hound Dog
Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama (a song so overplayed it's virtually impossible not to hate it)
Which of these films had a really memorable soundtrack?
The one with the smallest budget.
The music wasn't used to "signal" the year. Indeed, it gives the film a timeless quality. Or out of time quality.
Tarantino also had an especially excellent music supervisor, Karyn Rachtman. She got the job on Reservoir Dogs because SHE was able to get "Stuck in the Middle with You" for 10K , which the man who HAD had the job said wasn't remotely possible. SHE was willing to do the work...including getting the 2 composers to agree, which, as they had fallen out badly and wouldn't speak to each other, was very tricky.
Like low budget film making in general, a lot depends upon how hard people are willing to work.
Take the Merchant Ivory films. Howard's End, made in 1992, for $8m, was a freaking "costume drama" ie everything was super expensive - clothes for everyone even extras, vehicles, trains, furniture etc..And it had bloomin Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Simon Callow in it.
But Ismail Merchant worked REALLY negotiating everything. He's negotiate for each car, and location, and anything. He famously used to cook the food for cast and crew as well.
Film makers don't have to spend a fortune on their soundtrack of pops songs, unless they want to be obvious and unoriginal.
If they want to be super commercial and, frankly, lazy, then Yeah, they have to pay.
Indeed - they don't really need to spend huge amounts of money full stop.
The Coens are FAMOUS for being "low budget".
Fargo's budget was $7m, in 1996
Millers Crossing was $14m
The thing that stands out about all these lower budget films mentioned above...they're better, much better than the typical "Hollywood" big budget, bland, boring, bombastic 6ullshit.

First. I want to congratulate the people involve in the making of this video. But the hiss sound is just so annoying it is hard to watch the video without being distracted.

The Coen brothers, along with David Lynch, and a few others revived American film. So inventive! Who else comes to mind? The old guard of Scorsese and Coppola faded into stylised predictable fare.
It's too bad they didn't take the time to react to the kid's story.

The neurologist guy's presentations are totally irrelevant. And Ethan is clearly laughing at some of the baffling questions from Baldwin. But any rare chance to hear the Coens talk at length is welcomed.
Great interview. I love Carter Burwell's music score for Gods and Monsters. Having a drunkard as the host is a bit disappointing though.

I would love to have seen a scientist host this rather than Alec Baldwin. He kind of derails the conversation wenever it starts to get interesting. Still worth watching though.
