Zuckerberg met with Cook and asked him, face-to-face, CEO-to-CEO, how Cook would handle the fallout from Cambridge Analytica? And Cook, acidly, told Zuckerberg that Facebook should delete any and all data collected outside their own apps. Zuckerberg was… stunned, obviously ignored the advice, and would go on to tell an employee that Facebook needed to inflict pain on Apple.
Apple… well, Apple just decided that if Facebook wouldn’t delete our 3rd party data, Apple would let us delete their access to it, with iOS 14.5 and App Tracking transparency. They could still track what we were doing in their own apps, but if they wanted to keep tracking us across the web and other apps as well, they had to ask our permission first.
Now, 95% of American iPhone and iPad users, and roughly 88% of global users, are hard nope-ing out of 3rd party app tracking on the daily.

🔒 Have you turned on App Tracking Transparency?
Congratulations on surpassing 250K subscribers. You deserve it. I wish you soon reach 500K.
Yes congrats, I have turned it on, but not expecting anything.. Cook is a master-liar...
How do I turn it on?
Thanks for the thorough information. Although, Facebook & Google do use our microphones. Ive had too many experiences to believe any different
Love how u said Tim Apple lmao 🤣 I call him the same too.🤷🏽♂️
Zuck... the guy who infamously taped over his laptop's webcam. Yeah... privacy for thee.
I mean, he'd know, right?
@@ReneRitchie to be fair he would give you tape, but it be transparent tape.
and later apple made a colored green dot to show the camera is in use, wow that took a while for apple to finally invent what 1980s VHS cameras had before, a red dot
@@Kitty-oy5nj Later? That light has been around for years on Macs with cameras. Maybe do your research before commenting nonsense.
@@XMGi00 lol, do the research yourself. He's talking about a green dot on iOS 14 screen when the camera is connected even if you're not using it, and an orange dot for the mic as well.
“And Facebook, well, they’re losing their shit… BROUGHT TO YOU BY BRILLIANT.” 😂🙌🏼 best ad placement ever lol

My brain’s attention is the product. I’m the manufacturer of the product which Facebook is the reseller for. Advertisers are paying for my product. I should be getting paid for my product’s sales. This is great, Rene! Spot on.
You should check our Brave - you can get paid in BAT (Basic Attention Token) each time you're shown an ad.
How does Rene make money on youtube dude ???? think man, its just like FB, there ads on YT and Google is older and knows more about you than FB
Renee uses its users’ data to analyse and grow its channel … you are the product but not getting it paid by Renee or utube…
Generate just does that.
I stopped using Facebook and any of their services years ago now. It was less for the ad tracking and more about the flattening of my social connections. The guy I went to third grade with is not just as important to me as my grandmother.
I deleted my FB and Instagram accounts in Nov 2020 . I wish I knew how to back up all photos from G photos and G drive. I also wish there was a UA-cam alternative. But here we all are posting and watching UA-cam
I had no idea that they met face-to-face. Man, to be a fly on the wall...
If the fly survived, right?
What ?

Around 2004 to 2006, I had a conversation with a friend of mine. We were talking about Facebook and Google and their data harvesting of our online behavior. I mentioned my firm belief that the users of these online services should get together and file a class action lawsuit for royalties on the data gathered and monetized by them.
Sure about the years? Facebook didn’t take off until later than 2007.

So you take off.
I don't think you could file a lawsuit because it is us who accept those terms and conditions before signing up. If we don't agree, we should just not accept those terms.
There were other paid alternatives already but no one used them
It’s hard to believe the ad business after all these years is still worth so much. I don’t think I’ve ever bought something from an ad
Maybe not directly but for sure you were at least pushed towards a brand more than others by the effectiveness of ads

It’s battles like this that make me feel that much better that I was the guy in my company who got to fire Facebook as a client. What a glorious day.
Even thought they denied, they might recording us on microphone anyway, for example, I was talking about Ford Truck with my little brother, never post about it on Facebook, never talk about it on instagram, suddenly my FB account is full of Ford's ads.
Goes back to the old adage, 'You get nothing for free' - If you're getting access to something for free, it means YOU are the product.
This is why I built an Apple smart home; I can trust Apple not to be nefarious with my personal data; Amazon and Google - absolutely not.
Yup , all home automation is HomeKit or nothing for me.
I remember watching Rene almost 3 years ago when he made an Argument:
„Android is all about choice. So why not make a choice and try something different like Apple“.
I bought an iPhone XS when it launched because of this statement. I don’t want to go back.
It has been a blast and man I am so glad I made that choice!
Facebook doesn't want to share the money. That's why all of us creators are on Youyou

This is a video I was waiting for. I personally feel that my data is safe when I use an iOS device and I trust that I’m not being used
Thanks Conor, appreciate you! It's hard when for many people Facebook is the internet, right?
@@ReneRitchie for sure it’s a really difficult thing to manage so that’s why we have to be extra careful those people who might not be as informed don’t get affected by an issue like this
ah. okay for starters if you have read privacy policy you'll know that apple still collects data on ios users just that it it only shares data with so called trusted 3rd party companies which no one know who they are. coming to safety apple amd icloud has been hacked many times. I am apple user myself. my point here is just do not trust any company. we don't know what really happens under the hood.
his channel is based on Apple products. obviously he's going to take sides. do your research because that's the only way to be sure of anything
"Tim Apple"... It just never gets old xD
Rene always explains stuff so well!
Classic RR. Killer vid, analysis and commentary.
Thanks so much! Which videos do you prefer?
@@ReneRitchie yeah really all of your videos are great, the only video i didn't like was when you overloaded the video with a transition that took over the entire screen for 3 seconds. But you QUICKLY fixed that, so props!
Selling data and selling advertising are two different things. When people run ads on Facebook, buying clicks or conversions is not buying people's private data.
I also opted for not tracking me one thing i want to tell the day i got my iphone xr and the day i paused my all google history believe me i am getting ads that are nowhere near to my interest nowhere near to where i visit etc. And i love that.
Been saying PAY ME since day one - no one wanted to listen to me. How the world turns! Thanks Rene! Big fan since day one of your journey.
Thanks so much, and seriously. How much should they be paying?
Jaron Lanier has also been pushing this model of user micro-payments. Search on "Jaron Lanier NYT"
Oh, how the turntables
Try brave browser atleast you will be payed when you get an ad through bat token.
But I was not asked if I allow certain sites or apps to track me before ever since I updated new iOS. Was it automatically done? However, I was asked by sites if I allow cookies.
same...im not able to turn on this feature...it is weird
Deplatform FB!
Ha! Ironic or poetic?
This is good stuff, Rene. EVERYONE should hear this, and pay attention.
There is an odd perception that Facebook can’t track you without 3rd party trackers enabled in IOS. Google already does that without needing to use that level of integration and Facebook isn’t that far behind.
>Dunks on Facebook.
>Proceeds to hire Facebook's Ad Guy anyway.
the guy who got caught using signal over his own messenger has this kind of audacity 😂
"mark facebook" im dying
What is even more scary is TikTok gathering your personal data.
Why is that more scary?
FB collecting data on people more than what people want is already as scary as it can get.
@@Soosane its even more scary bcoz behind the tiktok there is chinese government
🥸 Why is any of it scary? Intrusive yes, annoying yes, invasive yes, but scary? I don’t understand why it’s scary. We know it’s happening. We allow it to continue happening by using their website and their apps. When we do, we give them more opportunities to be nefarious and more permission to their maleficence. Every time we log on, we may not like what they’re doing, but we condone it by using their services and consequently being the pawn in their schemes. The only way out is to get out.
@@SS-gw3cb and? I'm asking because I hear a lot of fear mongering of the Chinese government through American media.
I personally think they are both equally as scary.
@@RobertGaron
"Scary" might be too strong of a word. I do believe some of the tactics used by data collecting companies are creepy though and can sometimes cross the line of ethics. I'm ok with companies collecting data for personalised ads and browsing history (within their apps) but the problem is it doesn't stop there and they try other techniques to collect more data.
eg. fb's emotional experiment in 2012,
silent audio file "bug" used to keep the app on constantly, tracking browsing data outside their services.
But I agree we do need to boycott and stop using these services if we are against what they do and don't want them to collect data on us.
not Tim Apple and Mark Facebook LMAO
Great video. Quick question? Where did you get those spot lamps in the background of your video? Do you know the name of the lamps? Cheers.
I don’t mind ads. Especially first party, if it keeps it free, that’s fine by me. I just don’t want all of my data from anywhere to be stolen
Time to create a "content consumer" category and allow those of us that lend our eyeballs and time to be able to monetize as well.
Companies: "keep an eye on this Rene Ritchie"
It’s sickening .
Tim Apple and Mark Facebook 😂😂😂😂
Apple Cook and facebook zuckerburger
Lol… “Mark Facebook”
I'm calling Facebooks bluff on this. I bet if you did a poll of FB users and asked if they would leave if there was a viable alternative, 90% would say yes.
Problem is an alternative without ads would have to be paid
@@ayhamkadi7464 they can still run ads, just not targeted ads. I’d also love to see them charge iOS users, they’ll loose millions of users.
@@genericglass-8883 but without targeted ads they wouldn’t make nearly as much money as Facebook and they’d be at a significant disadvantage
@@ayhamkadi7464 They can target ads to us based on what information we have with Facebook. The real issue is they're tracking us on EVERYTHING. Our personal messages, emails, google searches, etc. They're spying on us at every point in our lives.

the way you segue to the brillant ad is so seamless. everytime. 👌
Here’s what I think about data tracking and the companies who do it: either pay us for the data you want or stop tracking me so much beyond essential purposes required to run a service but nothing else.
As I think people need a choice now on this. Both my iPhone and iPad are set to prevent all apps from tracking me across the web as I think app developers are collecting far too much info on me for no clear reason.
Your title doesn’t fit. That is overly exaggerated and use that when it actually happens.
As a VR/AR developer, it saddens me that Facebook is so invasive with the Oculus. I personally consider the Oculus Quest as an excellent headset and a great deal considering its specs, but as an Apple loyal fan I can’t stand FB anymore…it’s time for Apple to release their headset! 🙏
"Facebook and Instagram aren't services that were ever built for our benefit." If there was no benefit in using those services, those services would not have any users.
They aren’t beneficial. They’re just extremely addictive. Like cigarettes
I see it like this: Apple has proven again and again that they're not into actually gathering info on its users against their will. So I'm actually GLAD they're investing into their own ad business. If they can grow this up into a healthy business arm that doesn't harm users' privacy, game (and other app) developers can use that instead of all the kraken ad networks within their free apps. You know: A healthy alternative.
You deserve more subs 👍
I think the industry is too harsh in judging the motives of Facebook - at least the primary initial ones. These services at the onset weren't heavily monetized and they were built for people to make connections with each other. I'm sure they realized very early on that they had a ton of data and could make a ton of money advertising if their platforms became popular. No argument there... but I do think a lot of effort goes into these platforms by individuals to make a product for that initial purpose. Some realize they're feeding an advertising stream. Some, I would bet, are genuinely working on cool features for people that want to join social circles with others who share their interests.
Rene Ritchie . Thanks for all your UA-cam videos you do I have learned a lot off you with everything that you cover.

at if you’re not paying “... wow. such honest framing...
~10% of the Fortune 500 companies still exist since it was tracked in 1955. Primarily, the reason is that companies which were dominant, didn’t want to change, adapt, or cannibalize sales for a new business model, and after a new player did, they were too late and large to adapt fast enough. It’s a common pattern and I can’t wait to see someone pull this on FB. It will happen. Mark my words.
PRO TIP: When a multi-billionaire like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates can’t seem to manage details well enough to get a decent haircut, it’s probably not a good idea to trust them with the details of your life.
I agree and have been saying that since companies put their logos on clothing! Pay me to advertise for them!
So, Apple is also in the ad business, you say, but I don’t think I ever encountered an ad when I was browsing the App Store. Maybe because there’s a turn on/off switch for that? And also, could governments ask for that tracking data that Apple has collected to serve their users ads? Is it possible for that data to be end to end encrypted?
Great video. Well put. No one is in the right here as long as advertising plays a part.
To be honest Apple has had advertisers crying since the release of ITP in 2017
Nice job with this channel man.
Informative and tastefully uncomplicated.
Facehugging Parasite though?
Could be misunderstood as bias, pretty sure that was unintentional/nor in bad taste haha
Why would I bother joining any social network, when I can be arbitrarily deleted without any appeal just for voicing any ideology they don’t approve of.

If Apole wants me to buy a subscription to the News App then they will have to remove all adverts. Jus too many adverts.
To be honest, I'm with Tim, I hate to see those personalized ads, I would rather buy stuff from the app itself, not from those ads, how about you?
Which is why I don’t use a single Facebook service... or any of their affiliate companies.

This goes to further show that Tim Cook is a hypocrite. He's literally throwing stones from a glass house.
I believe Apple should get out of the ad business entirely.
facebook and Instagram can rott for all i care. i've never trusted those. so many people are cautious about not to show their tag number or give out their address when they have a vehicle or something else for sell. but they are quick to put all their business on social media. ive been over relatives house and seen their page. they got their. kids everything even schools and everything just listed for all to see. so much meta data in pictures like that. i just wish people would Ask them selves questions before they do stuff like that
