HUNTING classic cars in Devon & Somerset | GREAT FINDS

- Classic cars, garages and workshops found in Devon & across the border in Somerset make up this car discoveries upload. I wasn't sure that we'd stumble across much of interest during our time in the South West of England, given that we weren't actively looking for old cars most of the time, more just keeping our eyes and ears open to any opportunities that came along.
I needn't have worried, classic cars in Devon are definitely there for the finding.
Included are five - yes five - Austin A40 Farina discoveries, including one seen driving along in Dartmouth and tracked down to a nearby car park for a closer look. Three others were found in a wonderful old 1930s garage, that also was home to an amazingly-equipped engineering workshop - heaven for anyone with an interest in running classic cars. We got to hear about this place after chatting to the owner of another garage we stumbled across, demonstrating that getting out and about talking to fellow classic car enthusiasts is a great way to track down amazing places and car collections.
A preserved garage from the 1930s - once frequented by Laurence of Arabia no less - is another unexpected sighting covered in this video.
Other classic cars spotted in and around workshops in the area make it into this upload too, including a near-unique coachbuilt conversion of an already oddball French classic, a Silver Shadow in dire need of restoration, a crumbling VW camper, a spider-friendly Rover spotted down a quiet country lane, a 1950s Cadillac, a V8-powered Rover P4, a late example of Marina Coupe, a patina-laden Mk1 Cortina, a selection of American pickup trucks, plus others. We also grabbed a little footage of a '49 Chevrolet that loomed into our mirrors while driving along, and take a walk around of a vintage toy shop.
My thanks to everyone who agreed to me mooching around their classic cars, grabbing some footage for OCC followers to enjoy, and taking time out of their day to have a chat.
Footage taken in a Devon classic car museum will follow on later in a separate upload.
Where should we next go hunting classic cars? What parts of the country do you recommend? Let me know in the comments please!!!!

Great video, brilliant trip down memory lane. I live in Teighmouth and can highly recomend going to the museum at Mortonhamsted, makes for a great day out. Also thank you for show my 49 Chevy Fleetmaster at the end.
Ha brilliant, we were just lucky that we spotted you in the mirror and my youthful assistant grabbed the camera in time. It looked great driving along behind us! Did you just watch the vid and happen upon the clip, or did someone you know tip you off about it? Thanks for calling by and leaving a note. PS museum vid goes live on Sunday btw.
AWESOME thanks for sharing 😊

Still have many Dinky toy and Corgi lorry models so your toy shop tour was very interesting . Thanks for the memories. I have been following your channel for a long time so keep them coming Ed 40 S of Vegas in the desert of
Great back catalogue of vehicles there Ed, a vid of our old Venom was one of the first uploads I ever put onto the UA-cam channel.
That second vintage trading post you visited used to be a garage. My first job when I left school was there. We were Ford and Austin dealers. Where the horse stood used to be a set of three petrol pumps. Happy memories thanks.
Excellent and different video! I'm looking forward to the Moretonhampstead Museum video. I live in deepest Devon and I am ashamed to admit I have driven past the museum many times, wondered what it's like, but never visited it. I dare say your video will encourage me to make the effort. I chuckled at the Harley Davidson club at Sidmouth; the retired generals and twin-set brigade that inhabit Sidmouth must have choked on theit cucumber sarnies! Devon, Cornwall and Somerstet are littered with old abandoned cars, quietly decaying in the countryside. My dear old farmer neighbour has an old Hillman Hunter, barely visible under piles of used sheep feed plastic bags, that has the windows left open for the postman to leave the mail and for his nine cats to sleep in. Instead of a tractor he uses an ancient Toyota Corolla to transport bales of hay to sheep in his fields and to transport sick calves to the vet! The 21st century has yet to reach Devon!!
It sounds like the place I should be living in!!
WOW!!! That is my reaction to this great video. A real surprise to see all those wonders just there like that, and imagine what can be hidden ib barns and on farmlands. I am in anticipation to see the video of the motor museum. Each of your videos is a trip down memory lane for me.
Thanks Colin, like with the France video last year it's surprising what can be found when you get chatting to people, and taking the less obvious routes to places. Old established industrial estates are great places to begin the hunt.
hi, great video.i used to collect matchbox toys in the 60s, i think they were about 1/3d in old money, back then us children used to play with toys all day long in the hols.we also had corgi and dinky vehicles, i still have ten dinky army Bedfords which i keep as a reminder of the good times,
Great to see some of these antiques, from an expat UK now living in New Zealand.
Well done, brought back a lot of memories,
Cheers,
Peter Carrington, Anakiwa Picton NZ.
Thanks for the feedback Peter
The 200/25 SDi Rover were reliable torquey strong units and quite nippy now getting sort after they didn’t have the HG issues of the K Series which are easily sorted with an upgraded HG.
I had a large Meccano / forgive my spelling guess / set with a steam engine.CHEERS from HERE!
Welcome to my part of the world! The Ogwell Antiques shop is a real treat and well worth a visit. I have visited Moretonhampstead motor museum many times and it is packed with many rare classic cars and motorcycles. The building itself that houses the museum is a treat too.
Hi, yes we really liked the shop and the museum, definitely worse ways to spend the day!!!! Thanks for watching.
great blog there's some old stuff there mate Gary from Crewe 😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What an interesting video. Lots of unexpected content Such a variety of finds. Liked the Light 15 Citroen and the workshop. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 👍
An exceptional and wonderful video RJ. Bridgeport, Herbert, Cincinnati all big tooling and machine names way back when and still now in that amazing workshop which would never pass any Japanese Lean Manufacturing scrutiny but terrific in its own right. It is intriguing what you have literally stumbled across which leads me to think that there must be many such places across the country largely hidden from or unknown to public view. Off to see HJ's Car Traction channel now to see his take on things. Aladdin Pink Paraffin OH! I remember it very well in the 1950's. My father used to deliver it in his Bedford Tanker which was also pink when I was a kid and sometimes I used to sit it the cab and go with him. It stank and paraffin heaters where widespread at that time and very popular albeit dangerous.
Thanks Vince, yes it was a treat being allowed to see all that old machinery. The museum visit I had pre-planned but other than that, it was just case of roaming about and speaking to people. The old forms of communication still work!!! Years ago I heard from an old boy who still owned an E83W van and he'd been granted special permission in 1944 to buy a new van (sales restricted at the time) in order to deliver Pink Paraffin to outlying villages in his area. Hopefully the van survives.
@@oldclassiccarUK My father had to get a "permit" to purchase a new car in 1947, and then had to wait for it, which is a bit like today, the waiting I mean.........
@@oldclassiccarUK Aladdin Pink and Esso Blue paraffin heaters were widely used when I was a kid, this was in the days before central heating was pretty much universal. I can still remember the ad jingle for Esso Blue, also the cartoon ad where a lady with a VERY sexy voice rings up the Esso Blue dealer and he replies "Yes, this is the Esso Blee dooler!" Oh! How we laughed.......
Wonderful video, I used to drive that route many times and am so pleased that the garage is still there in Colyford.
Best car was that gorgeous Mercedes.
Thank you Rick and Harley
What a trip thank you both for your time and for sharing a most interesting trip down memory lane ,I hope you got home safely.
Thanks David!
thank you for taking on holidays with you, how fantastic was those old garages and engineering shop. Cannot wait for the motor museum video. Beautiful part of England Devon and Cornwall.
Thanks Allan, other than the museum and toy shop visit they were all "chance" un-planned finds
Hi 👋 What a fantastic trip and great video. Very interesting. The Antique shop selling the toy cars brought back memories for me. I had a collection of Dinky, Corgi and Spot On toy cars in the 1960s. I also owned a few French Solido brand and German Marklin models as well. The Marklin cars were made by the company that specialized in train sets I think Elvis Presley owned a Cadillac like the one you saw. Those Ford Zephyr 6s were popular here in NZ in the 1960s. The police used them. Thank you for the posting of a good video. From Carl.
Thanks Carl, glad you liked it
@@oldclassiccarUK I would like to learn how to send videos that i record out to people. I saw a 1971 white Hillman Hunter this morning when i went out shopping. It was parked at an Auto repair garage it was an Automatic model and in good condition. I didn't have my phone on me to record it. The Hillman Hunters and Avengers sold well in the 1970s. My father bought a Hillman Avenger Estate back then .
@@carltwidle9046 Hi, the issue really is that video clips in decent quality result in huge file sizes which makes emailing them to anyone a non-starter. The only realistic option is to find somewhere online (ie hosting space) that you can upload the files to, then send the link to them to people you know. Or set up a UA-cam channel and upload to there of course!
@@oldclassiccarUK Thank you for your information. I don't know about these things. I'm older generation. That Hillman Hunter i saw today was amazing , it was in such good condition.
What a great trip you must have had. I was so pleased to see the engineering workshop from another time and as you say all in working order. Some of those old cars outside looked like they were just parked yesterday! Others just need some love. The level that Harley bought was top of the range in its day, a very good make. Thanks for sharing your holiday with us Rick. 👍👍
Glad it was of interest, thanks for watching
I lived in Devon for a while as I worked at the then airline HQ in Exeter, so your utterly fascinating tour of places well known to me was a treat. As a total workaholic, I fear I never had time to visit these wonderful old garages and new museums much to my regret. Your eclectic knowledge made the video, as well as the visual treats. Thanks to you both, and glad to see that Ned The Shed will benefit, as well as the paternal collection!
Rob
Thanks Rob, glad you liked it
If this doesn't inspire you to get back to working on your A40, nothing will. Despite their issues, I've always liked the look of the A40.
Absolutely brilliant don't know how you will top this episode ian❤
Thanks for the feedback!!
Great video. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing you and Harley rummaging in some fantastic places on holiday. Loved the antique shops, especially the one with the old toys. The engineering equipment in the garage was amazing. I bet people qualified to use them are in short supply these days. We live in a throw away world sadly. Thanks again.
Loving the sunny Jim doll in the part where the Mr Beckham poster is. I always remember the words on the cereal packets...
High o'er the fence leaps sunny Jim
Force is the food that raises him. We had one for years.
And that wonderful engineering equipment, which my employers use a lot of(lathes etc),in our work for the railways xx
Thanks yes there were some interesting finds on that trip
Great video. More like this, please.
I'll try, did you watch the France vid last year? ua-cam.com/video/azFQjwzDF7I/v-deo.html
Yes. I liked that as well. These are my favourites along with the contemporary photos from the 50s/60s. Thanks for posting such quality content.
Ahh, my sort of holiday. Cant sit on a beach all day. The machine workshop reminds me of where I used to work, similar lathes, pillar drill, huge grinder etc. Went back a few years later, all gone, condemned by health and safety, such a criminal shame. Used to live quite near Lake & Elliots factory, again, all gone now. Enjoyed the toyshop as I used to sell similar items myself. Harley should have bought the Scalextric floodlights set as well, never seen a complete boxed set of those. Good to see the classic cars but a shame to see most of them outside in the elements. Would have loved the Granada estate.
Thanks for watching, yes sitting on a beach all day isn't my kind of thing either - I can manage an hour or so, then I get bored
great video.thankyou
Good looking cars!
some awesome finds there
I hope that Citroën light 15 isn't left there to rot like the VW camper and the Rolls Royce. Interesting video. 👍
Hope so too, it looked very sound indeed
Letting me admire his STOCK😊 cube as in Oxo good timing.
Were you following Reg Pither's cycling route of North Cornwall, Rick? Hope you didn't get your sandwiches badly crushed. 😁👍
I plough my own furrow and planned my own route!!! Thanks for watching, all sandwiches survived
Excellent way to start my Sunday. What a trip you had to the West Country, and some great places you filmed for us. It's amazing what you can 'spot' just driving around these country villages - TG they are still there and hopefully will be kept for posterity. Thanks for sharing this - something different and so interesting. BTW, is that your Honda or did you hire it for your trip, and did you take your dog ? Take care 🙂
It seems to be good hunting ground down there, especially away from the built-up areas. PS yes that's our old Honda, a dependable and usable old thing. Alas the dog plan didn't work out (for many reasons) but she's been re-homed now.
Thanks Richard. I was wanting a video of memorabilia/toys of the UK. Much different from the US. Now about those big Ford, GMC, Chevrolet trucks - who can afford to run them there? I liked the '67 Camper Special especially as it looked to come from the Western or deep southern US due to its lack of rust. Those era Ford trucks often rusted in two right behind the cab or the cab floor would decay and sag over the frame. The Camper Specials had heavy duty rear springs and extra cooling capacity for hauling campers/boats, etc. I was just surprised to see all the American heavy iron in one shop!
Glad you liked it, a lot of big-engined American vehicles end up converted to LPG to help with running costs, although many stockists of LPG are closing down their pumps so there's no guarantee it'll remain widely available here.
Great video, your powers of detection are equal to those of Sherlock Holmes. How do you find these cars and places? I can't help but feel a tiny bit sad when old stock cars are turned into racing cars. I find the plain stock cars much more interesting - they give me a sense of solidarity with the past. The 70s boxed Matchbox cars at Ogwell's shop gave me a severe attack of nostalgia - I paused the video and counted about eight that I owned as a boy. The illustrations on the boxes are just gorgeous artwork. Yep - I really enjoyed the video, thanks.
Thanks Edd, yes I like to see cars as road cars but this one was destined for scrap so it was saved, which is the main thing. Thanks for watching.
Great video, some interesting stuff especially the 'flat back' light 15 Citroen. The Cadillac is a '55
Thanks for the info!
I highly recommend 'Job's Toy's' in Fleetwood, Blackpool.
👌👌
“HUNTING oldies in the SOUTH WEST “ -
With the guitar playing Blues, definitely appealed to my American me, but when I saw the 1951-1952(?) CHEVY, I had to do a double take ‼️. 🚗📻🤣
18.46 min Look at the size of those DAGMARS !!!
Makes me wonder if a lot of viewers know what you are referring to....................
I paused the video at 52:52 when Harley uncovered the second tray of those Matchbox cars...
Wow!
I counted about a dozen of those that I had myself 50 or more years ago! The Ford gritter truck, the white GT Ford with the '6' on it, the silver Greyhound bus, the Lyons Maid (I think) ice-cream van with the transparent roof, the gold Landy with the roof luggage, the cream Atlantean double-decker, the forward-control BP Exploration lorry (and the 8-wheeler in the top left of the shot and the 6-wheeled petrol tanker with the tip-forward cab), and what was, if memory serves, described as a 'Rover 1800' (half-hidden behind the Land Rover), but looked like a dry run for the SD1 (although the model pre-dated the introduction of the SD1 by a good two or three years).
Incredible memories there! Thanks both for another top-notch vid!
Glad you found it of interest! It was fun looking at all those toys for sale
I think the Cadillac was a 55.
18:05 Cadillac is a 1955
📻🙂
Fabulous. I bet your wife just despairs...
Wellll I do have a bit of previous for this kind of thing (see last year's trip to France video)
i was born and lived very near where that bridgport miller was built in Bridgeport Connecticut U.S.A.there getting to be a rare sight now.they will run for ever if maintained properly
High street in Bala North Wales still have outside kerbside pumps in daily use .......
I feel a visit coming on in that case :)
Nice, but at about 21 mins in, when you were showing all the stuff inside the mini-bus/van, the unsteady-cam started to make me feel rather queasy! perhaps you might invest in a steady-cam? …just a suggestion! ;)
P.S. My grandfather was a sales rep for Cincinnati Tools in the UK back in the 1940/50's. His employer lived in a palatial house somewhere on the South Coast where he and his family were sometimes invited; the lady of the house had a butler who followed her with a silver tray to gather the roses that she cut from the garden............
A bit like that here too :-)
Interesting coincidence: at around 09:00 you show a Ford pickup; a few hours earlier Derek Bieri posted his own experiences with a very similar truck (ua-cam.com/video/lGlZwmBANEo/v-deo.html).
crap
Thanks for the feedback!! Have a great evening
