Thank you for your time putting together this video. We are here in Vermont and between the flood and the rain we got, we lost all of our garden. Everything got WAY to much water. I've been saddened that I haven't been able to put up MY foods. Store bought just doesn't come close, but I've been getting stuff that will store well. We aren't a fan of store bought prepared stuff. Farmers markets here are so expensive that I just can't afford it. We are in our 60's and 70's and doing the best we can. Thank you again for your ideas. God Bless
Same here retired and in central Maine. To much rain stunted everything in my garden. Thankfully it's just me, but I'll have to supplement my pantry with certain things. It's always been a way of life in my home. Just disappointing this year for sure.
I made like a lentil stew today. I use chicken bouillon and fresh carrots, celery, onions and then I put cumin smoked chili pepper, and my dried cilantro to make it taste mexican. I have to thank you for mentioning lentils cause I’ve never cooked with them before. Thanks again
I have never cooked with lentils either. Now, I throw a small handful into whatever is in the pot. I am trying to get into the habit of using them, not just keeping them in a bucket.
yesterday I picked up a jar of ghee and a bag of moong (mung) beans, they are quick cooking like lentils, this will increase my legume variwety in my food storage. also loaded up on canned meatsand spices
ADJUST your list to your taste: Beans Lentils (any kind) Flour (things to make flour such as wheat berries) Olive oil / Coconut / Avocado / Lard Pasta Rice (rice and beans = complete protein) Broth and Bouillons Honey and sweeteners (Maple, etc.) Oats Vinegar (white and apple cider) Salt and spices Coffee / Tea Peanut butter or whichever nut butter you want Shelf stable snacks (hard candies, chocolate, etc.) Protein Vegetables Fruits
I love everyones great helpful comments! We've stocked up on I think everything listed. Plenty of candles, lighters and matches. Back ups for our backups! Just a few thoughts to share... We've put back various stew tomatoes to an flavor to rice and beans. Assorted pasta sauce and a variety of canned meat. Tuna, salmon, corned beef, chicken and burger. When turkey sales come on, its a great time to purchase extra if you can. We pressure canned some and it is fabulous! Love it for easy meals and food security, especiallyat 39 cents a pound! Keep preparing!
@@crazygrandmaweaz8942 Absolutely! The meat is so moist! In 5 or 10 minutes, dinner is done. Delicious hot turkey sandwiches too. Great grid down food that is easy to heat and eat.
I stocked up on SPAM today……$2.98 which I thought that was a fairly good price, it had been almost been almost $4.00 a can in my area….. Thank you😊good list!
Excellent, Jinne; keep instructing people as to how easy, and important this is. I have all of the above. Things that I have in my stockpile are some unusual canned vegetables and fruits that I don't generally buy, but would come in as tasty and convenient. I can't imagine not having vegetables and fruit, and also to have easy and different additions to the basics, especially in stressful times for the non-cooks in the family to prepare easily. As sweeteners, I have added molasses. Candy and snacks are a must. Life has to be worth living.
I am not big on beets. I did buy, over time, about 12 cans. I will eat them if they come with my meal so, I think it will be a nice change instead of just corn and green beans.
I have a suggestion, keep a clipboard and a note pad in your pantry and tell all family members if they take the last item, or ones you are using a lot and getting low on, make note. Then before you go shopping take this list with you and then remember to put the clipboard back. I used this clipboard and list for our company by the coffee and office supplies because someone would take the last item and not tell us so showed the list to all and then we knew what we were out of or runnning low on so same concept for the pantry items. Not everyone knows how to cook basic things, including cooking beans and rice from scratch. So if you plan to share either of these, printing out the cooking instructions will help them know how to do it. Also having precanned beans and precooked rice packets too, in a pinch if the power is out, water is low, having it already prepared is necessary. A couple of other sweeteners that are good to have on hand are organic Agave and molasses. Agree with you about herbs and spices to help improve flavor of our meals. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and others come from the tropics or overseas so could be in shorter supply, but herbs like parsley, basil and others can be grown in pots on your windowsill or under basic grow lights and are great to add to your foods. Shelf stable snacks is a good idea, watch for after Halloween sales too, you can maybe get some on markdown and then vacuum seal those treats or put in airtight jars. One other thing might be to have non-electric ways to open your boxes, cans and containers like manual can openers, sturdy scissors, bottle openers, etc. If you plan to do a holiday meal, maybe get shelf stable items now like canned sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, canned pumpkin, cranberries, potatoes, cocoa, flour and sugar. Sorry this is so long!
I canned veggie broth and pork broth yesterday. I thought this would be great with rice or pasta for a flavoring. Also would save water if there is a need.
Hi Jinnie, I totally agree. I have just bought 25 lbs. of sugar for 3 years, I am type 2 diabetic and use it for my husbands tea and half sugar half stevia for baking. I found Krogers had a Ragu sale $1.25 a jar the 16 ounce ones limit 4 I grabbed 4 even though I have a years worth you never know

Great list, Jinne! I have stocked all these things. Probably could use more of some of them. I have been working hard to get more fruit put away. I should probably get some more snacks put up. I've been thinking about getting two more buckets filled with rice and beans. More won't hurt at all. More honey, too. Thank you!
I usually come away with something to add to my lists after watching your videos, this time is no different, topping off the vinegars. One of my favorite ones was the spice bucket, that video came out just as Sams was having a spice sale and I really stocked up on them and then kept adding different ones along the way. Spices are on my top ten list when i do my shopping only because as you say they are important to have on hand. Flavor enhancers are very important.
