  • Here's a test of powering my Mark 2 with a Goal Zero Yeti power bank. Later on I add a solar suitcase to the mix and find out in this configuration even with the sun low in the sky I could run the Mark 2 all day without using any reserve battery.
    Here's the DC boost converter I use to convert 12V to 24V (affiliate link works for 24hrs).

    Here are the wire crimpers I'm using with multiple jaws. There's one in the kit that works well with Anderson in two steps: amzn.to/3Klbivh
    "Real" Anderson crimpers specific to Anderson connector fittings: amzn.to/3Vvds25
    Anderson sleeves for pro looking cord ends: amzn.to/4bFEIAo

      It varies widely based on the generators design and how much amperage it will "allow", and how much power your charging source can put out. I'm testing a 2500Wh battery right now that offers a "quick charger" that outputs 1250W and can charge to full in 2.5 hours. So, look at the specs, decide how quickly you need it to charge and find one that can handle what you can feed it. Feeding a generator more and more charging power is where the costs can start to climb.

    for my off grid cabin idea...
    A $100 115AH (~700WH usable) deep cycle battery and $250 300 watt 24v solar panel from home depot (with cheap 20a controller) should be enough to move into 8x8 shack under the trees in middle of nowhere Florida. LOL

    THIS VIDEO IS A GAME CHANGER!! Great job!! You are a few weeks ahead of me, but I am doing the same set up as you! when the power grid goes down and we’re all sitting in 90 to 100° humid heat in a house, and there are no gasoline pumps working, the only place to live will be in a car or van, with a yeti 1000 or higher, with solar panels and this ZB II air conditioner, to keep us alive!!! I’m not into heat exhaustion or heat stroke! I already have the Yeti 1000, and the ZBII I ordered just before finding your video, which is absolutely perfect in answering all the questions I was thinking of - ahead of time! Thank you!!! By the way, did you send an email to zero breeze support to get the plastic pieces that were broken replaced? Did they respond and are they sending replacements?

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому

      Thanks, glad the video helped! No, have not contacted them on the broken piece yet. It holds as long I don't pull on it, so wanted to let them get settled a bit with the roll out and the virus stuff going on. They were receptive when my first Mark I (the original) stopped working after about 3 minutes. After several "reminders" they did send me a new one, so I assume they'll take care of the duct when the time comes, fingers crossed. Also, I received my 12V to 24V converter, all wired up, tested, all the video is shot, and hope to have the video up in a few days.

    Interested in only running ZB as vehicle air conditioning while driving in my van with aux battery. Seems the simplest plan considering alternator charging is an AC inverter from the aux battery? Reduced efficiency due to inverter is not a concern while driving. Do you think it will cool a van (Vanagon) in this application? Thanks.

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому

      It will not replace a vehicle air conditioner as a vehicle ac has around 15K BTU capacity, and the Mark 2 is 2300 BTU. This is especially true during the day in full sun.

    Would this a/c work all night (6-8 hours) on a 500ah, lithium battery? How does the water drain or does it? I've read there is also a 'night or sleep mode'. If my math is correct, this a/c could run several nights without a recharge on the battery...But I'll be recharging with solar or generator daily. Thanks for a superb video.

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому

      You're welcome. Haven't tested at night or using sleep mode, but yes, sleep mode should use less power and stretch the battery out some. 6-8 hours might be a stretch, but with a lower amp draw of sleep mode and cooler ambient temps the run time should increase significantly over day use.

    Great, detailed review here with lots of unexpected extra tidbits of useful info. I'm curious if you know if the Zero Breeze Mark 2 would work with a Jackery 1500 using just the A/C plug that comes with the Mark 2? They're all sold out of 12v to 24v adaptors on their website and I'm not sure where else to get one. Thank you!

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  2 роки тому +1

      For sure. As long as your battery's inverter is supplying adequate, steady A/C output. You do lose some efficiency since you're converting DC > AC > DC, but it's not a huge hit. You can also get a 12-24V converter on amazon or elsewhere online and wire it all up yourself. I needed a 20amp rated model from Amazon to get consistent results.

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  3 місяці тому

      You can for sure. I have a whole video testing how long the battery lasts with each way of powering. That is the only issue. It's less efficient to run off the AC inverter so you get less run time. If that's not a concern for you then that might be your best bet.

      Thanks! Similar setup here. Best place I've found in any vehicle is the "flappy" pressure relief, exhaust ports. Mine were between the inside trim and my rear bumper. Pop those out on each side and you have a discrete path to the outside. Just have to make up an adapter to go from round duct to rectangular hole. I used a 4" drain cap that the duct fit on perfectly then taped over the rest of the hole with metal duct tape. Otherwise you have to cut a hole somewhere or run out an open window.

      There are a LOT of variables, day/night, how hot it is outside, how hot the space is inside, etc. I think I got around 4hrs on a good day running mine constantly in a hot vehicle under full sun with a 1000WH battery. It's been a while since I've run it out completely, so best to watch my videos where I run the battery out completely in a hot car to make sure. Edit: Can you please tell me what volts of solar panel i need?

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  2 роки тому +1

      There are a lot of variables there. Possible? For sure. All depends on how hot your environment is, how large a space you're in, day/night, and what you're trying to achieve. I can get around 4.5 hours on high in a very hot environment during the day just running off of my Yeti 1000 WH battery. So that will get you a rough idea of the size of battery per hour. Then you'll need to calculate the solar needed to not only run the Mark 2 during the day, but enough charge left over to recharge the battery from the night before (probably many hundreds of watts). Your battery/BMS/wiring/charge controller specs will be specific to your setup and tell you how many Volts of solar you can handle and how you'll need to wire (series/parallel) to provide adequate current. Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but there are just so many variables.

    Hi!! I bought the Mark 2, I’m trying to install it in my single cabin straight truck, I bought a 400W inverter to power the Mark 2, the inverter is connected directly to one of the 4 12V batteries of the truck, and I used the original AC/DC converter that comes with the Mark 2. For some reason is not cooling, and the fan speed is super low. It turns on, but the compressor doesn’t seem to kick in at any time. What you think the problem is?? Please help.

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  3 роки тому

      Hi. Can't say for sure, but any similar issues I've had with my Mark 2 or the original were due to not supplying it with enough power. Whether that was wire size or DC converter size, etc. Since you're powering with AC power, I would rule out your inverter first in case the 400W inverter just isn't able to give you that compressor startup power, or your batteries may be contributing. I'd try taking it inside and plugging into your house and making sure the Mark 2 is working with adequate power. Then if not, I'd contact Zero Breeze. They've always been very receptive when I've had any issues or questions.

      Hi, I went with the Bluetti AC200Max during the pre-sale. I wanted more capacity and I saved some money that way....plus, I like new gadgets. The specs and reviews were also very good and it has no problem running the air conditioner. My Yeti was solid, as all Goal Zero products seem to be, but they are very expensive and (unless they've upgraded) have really low amperage plug in chargers for their batteries which I never understood. Both batteries were/are solid. I really like the bluetooth control in the AC200Max, and the faster charging from the wall. Not sure what Goal Zero is offering these days. Any battery from an established company with a presence/support online will probably work for you, from there you just need to decide what capacity, what bells and whistles you want, and what port/cable types you want/need to use.

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  3 роки тому

      It depends on whether you're running it on AC or DC. The AC adapter that comes with the Mark 2 can just be plugged into the 120V inverter output on the Yeti if you want to do it that way, but it uses more power to make those conversions. If you want to run direct DC off the Yeti battery you need a 12V to 24V DC converter as the Mark 2 runs on 24V and the Yeti puts out 12V. In the end I found I needed a 20 amp version of a DC converter to supply enough power to the Mark 2. All has been well since. As far as cables you would need to build your own to get from the Yeti to the Mark 2 if you go the DC route. Last I checked, zerobreeze.com sold a cable with their connector on it and bare ends to at least get that part done.

      No, not for 1700. To be more specific, not for my use case which is in a vehicle in full sun during the day (over 90° weather). At that point I don't know that I'd be getting enough bang for the buck. I paid around 4 or 5 hundred on the first day of crowd funding, and I'm more than happy with that amount and what I'm getting. • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому +1

      The Mark 2 will have a difficult time "cooling" an 8X8 area in most cases, but will cool you if it's blowing on you. A very insulated space will help. In my tests I get about 4.5 hrs on normal mode with a Yeti 1000 battery in a very hot vehicle during the day to give you an idea of runtime. I'm not very familiar with the icybreeze, but it looks comparable to my ice model (ice models currently discontinued) cooler from swampy.net that I used for years before the Mark 2. If it can move the same amount of air as the swampy coolers (my swampy moves A LOT of air), it could make a difference in a well insulated space. I could run my swampy off of my vehicle battery almost all day and still start the engine to give you an idea of power usage. I think it used ~2 amps on high. When using the ice cooler in my vehicle I could easily melt 40lbs of ice in about 4-5 hrs or less depending on the temp, so keep that in mind. This was during the day, so night time in an insulated space would probably last longer.

    btw can you charge the yeti 1000 via 110v AC wall socket (without panels)?

      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому

      Yes, but it's abysmally slow. Around 70W even with MPPT using the included charging brick. Apparently the new yetiX models have increased charge speed. I personally just got in on the crowd funding for the new Bluetti ac200 1700wh battery. Amazing on paper, we'll see.

    I have the Yeti 1400, and the Anderson connectors run 20 amps output, and I used that with a female cigarette port to run my Mark I, even though I have the Max Current Cable as well. I will use the connectors as you have with the converter to step up the voltage to 24V.

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому

      So you ran the Mark 1 with the Anderson/Cigarette ports? I built a custom cable (Anderson/Cigarette port combined) to run my Mark 1 and it never worked, always got the red light shutdown on my Yeti. Even tried their 12V regulated female cigarette port cable. Had to in the end buy the max current cable just to get it to work, which is why I just used that automatically with the Mark 2. Maybe my Yeti has a problem.

      @Bucklemuncher 4 роки тому

      @@Polymathicus I ran the Mark I from just the Anderson port under the female cigarette port, and had ordered the SMAKN 12V 30A Female Car Cigar Cigarette Lighter Socket Plug Connector Adapter to use with it. I used the aviation connector that ZB supplied with the unit and wired the CUZEC Heavy-Duty 15A Male Plug Cigarette Lighter Adapter Power Supply Cord with 1.6ft / 0.5m 16 AWG Cable Wire to that. Never had an issue at all.

    In your opinion do you think this could efficiently cool say a 200 square foot tent?

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому +1

      That seems a like a big area to cool. There are a lot of variables to consider. Heat load is the problem, trying to keep an area cool that is being constantly heated (by the sun) if the AC cannot overcome the heat load. If we're talking about night time that might be a different story, a small space on a hot day but in the shade could be possible, but any space being beat on by the sun is going to be difficult to cool with an air conditioner this small. I just tested in a vehicle, full sun, sealed up, intake and outlet hoses ported to the outside, tinted windows and sun shade, only 64 degree ambient outside temp, and it had a difficult time holding temperature inside. The air coming out however felt very cold and with the front duct attached kept that air on me making me feel cold, and this is how I'm going to use the Mark 2, as a spot cooler keeping me cool rather than my space.

  • @samgorski1733

    Do you think the ZB Mark 2 would cool a small cabin in a 24ft boat?

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому +1

      If it's very small, insulated, and not very hot outside the cabin, and the intake and exhaust hoses are ported outside then maybe, with a better chance at night. Otherwise, this is best thought of as a spot cooler to point at a person/people in a room and keep them cool like you would use a fan for, but this fan also cools the air coming through it. So it's much more than a fan.

    so how does this cool the room when its really hot does it really work?

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому

      Wasn't really designed to cool large spaces being heated up by the sun during the day. But more to cool what it's blowing on in that space. I use it in a 100 degree enclosed vehicle, and I'm very comfortable in the air stream. If I move out of that air stream, I start sweating immediately. If your room is small, very well insulated, and not too hot outside, could be different story.

      Got a bit delayed but new video coming soon testing 12 to 24v converter with the yeti. Got my first "full day" of testing in a hot vehicle in full sun. Inside thermometer showed 95 degrees ambient in the closed up vehicle, 62-64 coming out of the mark 2, ran about 4 hours before going home with plenty of battery to spare, was impressed, hope it can handle 120 degrees ambient in a couple months. Converter did get hot.

    • @digitalat2
      @digitalat2 4 роки тому

      jtskr25 really? This is very very good news! By the way how long did it take to get the inside of your car temperature down from the 90s into the 60s? In direct sun or ”shade” Also I have another question: I am still waiting for my ZBII to come in the next shipment hopefully - how did you get yours so quickly?!

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому +1

      @@digitalat2 sorry, should have been more clear, outlet temp from the mark 2 was low 60s. That was with an ambient temperature in the vehicle in the 90s. There's no chance an air conditioner of this size could cool a closed vehicle in full sun, too much heat load. The ambient steadily crept up. I can say however that I myself in the vicinity of the mark 2 outlet was very comfortable for several hours, no sweating. As soon as I left the air stream that changed.

    • @digitalat2
      @digitalat2 4 роки тому

      jtskr25 ah yes, this makes sense then as I am tracking with all your videos as I intend to use this zbIi device for bug out or survival purposes, as when the grid goes down we will rely on solar and in hot Texas we need to cool ourselves down during the day. One idea I have is to put a very small tent in my living room, and use this ZB to cool only the small tent area or to blow directly on me and vent though as window portal, so I can survive and not die of heat stroke. If this works.... I will immediately buy the upcoming Yeti 6000x

    I was planning on much smaller cheaper yeti what you think how small can I go for how long ?

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  4 роки тому +1

      Very difficult to answer as there are so many variables involved. I have not run my Yeti 1000 to zero yet in a test, but I'm estimating about 5 hours runtime on normal mode with inside vehicle at 95 degrees, and outside vehicle in the 70's. I assume there is going to be a big change when that outside temp gets up into the 100's and that hot air is being drawn through the condenser which is going to make the Mark 2 struggle more. I will post those results here in a few months.

  • @jayciotti9089

    Great video Thanks for posting! I'm converting a smaller hatchback into a camper and I'm wondering if a 500w station could run the Mark 2 over night in sleep mode (8hrs) against 80-85 degree temperature 🤔

    • @Polymathicus
      @Polymathicus  3 роки тому +1

      Haven't tested that exactly so can't say for sure. There have been comments, as well as posts to the Mark 2 facebook group about the Mark 2 running very efficiently on sleep mode. So, you'd definitely get a longer runtime per Wh on sleep mode and in a cooler environment than my test videos, but 8 hours seems unlikely off of a 500Wh battery in my guess unless you are installing considerably more insulation, and maybe cordoning off the back end of the vehicle by making a cocoon around your sleeping area. I'd poke around the Mark 2 facebook group...the folks that had good luck overnight may have posted the power draw they were getting.

      If it's around 75 degrees ambient or higher, that's about what it does at minimum. If not, their support has been very receptive in my experience with them.
