I played the original DS version years ago and currently playing through the Switch Version now. The controls for the DS and the Touchscreen/Undocked Switch work great but joycon controls can be janky as hell for certain pins as the game will struggle to register commands. However, I will say that playing the game co-op is a lot of fun, I let my girlfriend play as Neku to try out all the pins as she never played the game before while I take the partner character and we've been enjoying it a lot this way. The co-op pins that the partner gets to use are pretty fun even if you can't customise them.
I'd say I prefer the Switch version for the extra content/music options and nicer visuals but if you're playing alone only play it undocked as it's far better to control with the touchscreen, otherwise if you have someone to play with then the co-op mode is actually a great addition but that is the only reason to ever play the game docked for me personally.
I genuinely still prefer the DS version. I think the Switch did a great job reimagining the game, but none of the remasters can truly adapt the unique combat of the original version; your partner taking damage and having to control both characters simultaneously is really fun and challenging. And even if you play Solo Co-op on the Switch, the controls while docked can be a bit of a problem. I still consider it a really, really solid port though.
Original, wayyy more difficult.
I've played the DS and mobile version and, honestly, I prefer the mobile. I will say I started on the mobile. I found the DS' visuals to be bleh in comparison and although the presentation is better cause of two screens, it was hard to look past the fact that the visuals are part of why I liked it to begin with.
When I got it for the DS I really found managing two screens to be too irritating and my hand hurt too quickly. The Beat Em Ups channel guy, Wood, reviewed the Switch version and he talked about his hand hurting too much cause of how you have to hold the device in handheld mode cause Docked was nigh on worthless.
While, I can appreciate why many love the DS version and for the reasons expressed elsewhere, I just don't want to have pain in my wrists in order to enjoy this game. Because of this fact, I never got very far in the DS version and it's also why I won't pick this up on the Switch. The failed Dock mode option really hosed this game for me.
The original DS version is better if you want a higher difficulty, and the original experience. The Final Remix version is easier (both in combat and in Pin evolution), but has enhanced music (and you can turn on the original music whenever you want), the best visuals (in my opinion, it is better because it is not pixelated anymore) and extra content at the end of the main game.
I never have a problem getting used to the two screen fights, and I love the difficulty added by the the fact of Shiki taking damage, my choice is the DS version without a doubt.
same here. I miss having Neku's Partners interact with him, like they can sense when the other is hurt. Like how Neku would tell them "Be careful!" when the partner is in pain and they would react when Neku gets hurt. It really feels like they have to rely on each other to survive
ds ver make you feel those two are fighting together, like a team, while phone and ns ver...shiki and other two are just a weapon╭(╯ε╰)╮
As autistic person with adhd i actually prefer the mobile/switch ports because they don't expect you to play 2 characters at once. And since i have trouble focusing on two things at the same time i actually prefer the mobile version. In the ds version i had a lot of road blocks because i struggled keeping up with 2 characters
@@skullart2084 At least we can all agree that having so many opinions available is for the best.
@@skullart2084 I have ADHD too. I didn't have trouble focusing on the two screens. Maybe because I played on emulator, using the keyboard for using the partners skills and the mouse for Neku screen
my dudes emulator running 1 fps
in terms of presentation the DS wins.
some details are altered/removed to fit with the single screen of the switch and mobile versions
true. But I do like the HD character protraits
@@littenfire3563 the HD portraits are the only good part, but like... sacrificing two of the key components of the game for it isn't worth it, especially when simulating 2 screens is 100% possible on mobile.
So you recomend the ds version to start off? I'm a newbie
@@antoniodelgado5465 yes
@@WednesdayMan Absolutely. Not only is the presentation best and the original 2-screen gameplay unmatchable, but all the time the other screen gives you super valuable information during combat or so on. Even so, notice how both screens often show a cutscene on one and the environment on the other-it really adds to the busyness and sights of Shibuya to see what’s surrounding them while interacting.
The DS version was maybe hard to play 2 screens at the time but that's basically what makes it fun. So I'm goin with the DS.
This is what makes this game so special it has an insanely high skill ceiling due to the 2 styles of combat at once. On Switch you just boringly mash your pins.
Yeah, the DS version was more immersive in my opinion, I liked the mobile version, didn't played the Switch version tho (ain't got the Switch)
I play in ds emulador to feel thease gameplay whit two screens
agreed
As a (docked) switch player, the DS combat honestly looks like a ton of fun with having to juggle both characters like that.
it really is.
I tell ya its not
It is and it’s still the best way to experience the game
3:11 it's such a minor change but I love how now it looks like the blue orb comes out of Neku's eye in the Solo/ Switch Remasters
I'm here after the announcement of NEO
Same, I've been watching so many reactions to the trailer that anything TWEWY is getting in my feed xD
Im here just to see what is the difference between the ds and mobile.
@Parrot Cat tbh i really dont like it too
Hurts that it's a shittendo thing and not on pc
@@Tom3kkk it’s coming to pc
I feel that switch dude's 'rapidly shaking the cursor at the enemy hoping something happens' technique.
Demn I miss this game. Played the DS version on drastic emulator on my nexus tablet years ago. Since the game was originally designed for DS, remasters cant really showcase its fullest potential with only one screen. Yes the graphics and audio might be better on switch but you cant emulate the full dual screen experience, so DS still wins for most people (especially those who have played the DS).
Is this game even playable in drastic, controlling Shiki must be a nightmare
@@deiz1083 Its hard. A huge pain, but still fun
@@deiz1083 yep its possible, have to turn on auto play tho : P
I appreciate the nostalgic trip, got me wanting to buy the app! Really miss this game, keep up the good work!
I remember crying when I finished the game and lullaby for you plays at the end. The game is so good. Still, for me DS is by far still the definitive version
Fucking spoilers dude dammit
@@rusted8444 why are you on a world ends with you video in 2020 if you want don't want to get spoilers, your own fault lmao. game is 2 years old from the switch port, and 10+ years old from the original nds.
I remember not wanting to finish the first week thinking it was the end
"By far" is a huge stretch
I heard only ds version have lullaby for you. Other versions really missing out
the DS dual screen combat was pretty hard for me back when I played it as a child, I played co-op mode with my brother, me on the bottom and he on the top, good memories.
That sounds both really adorable and really proficient
I have a dirty mind.
Poor choice of words Jenniefer with you on bottom and he on top
Sussy
Omg samee. Those memories, dude. They can't be replaced 😢
The DS version is the Best!!!!
Agree this is where it all started
Yes. 2 Scrrens are better than one in this Game.
was there ever any doubt
for Nostalgia but gameplay in android is ton of times more enjoyable
@@mohamadali3219 I feel like Solo Remix is too easy
DS version is by far the definite version not because of dual screen comvat but because its how the game was originally was planned and inteded to be in the first place, square enix wanted to experiment the potential of whats capable the DS Lite could handle so they made this game by shinji hashimoto based in the idea of real life social interactions in japan about gaming
what i like about the remasters is that it has more soundtracks and reanimated sprites on the characters
The world ends with frogs
Wow
Just goes to show this game took full advantage of the DS. Other versions kinda cheapen it.
The only aspect that is cheapen is the combat, how the hell can the even manage to do dual screen combat? Everything else is improved. Not to mention, they got more content. Each version have their perks I guess
@@deiz1083 haha the DS version was the only version we had for a while. They made it work and they made it fun, man. All I can say
@@deiz1083 ayyy 2023 here, yes i agree, they did added alot of things in switch, including my favorite thing which is the musics got longer than the short versions in DS.
And people mostly go with DS mostly because of how hard it is or just nostalgia kicking them or both.
Id say mobile and switch is a huge improvement, totally better than DS imo (yes i played the ds version back then)
@@itsyaboidenjiatitagain5404gameplay still more fun on the DS that’s all that matters
Just what I just dreamed about.
Thank you so much
6:48 Why did they change it to a question mark in the Switch version?
not a question mark, just shows it’s a fakeout
Ds forever
The only thing I thought could have been done better on the switch version is give Player 2 a health bar.
There was a video of the game that showed a kinda similar gameplay to the Ds, with the cards of shiki from the original game and not the sync mechanic. Also, seemed like shiki wouldn't leave the screen, so she could have taken damage before.
I just started it up on my iPhone X. I really like the touch controls.
Did you like the game?
phi latio16 Lol a little late for a reply but I loved it!!
@@turnbasedtoddy7664 really glad! Is one of my fave games ever.
Did you hear about the anime being made?
@@philatio1744 did you hear about a sequel being made
@@songhill6962 YES! I'm so happy and excited about it!
I still have the original DS version I bought back in 2008.
Good times.
Already beat the sequel, good game.
Very cool!
It's a shame that some stuff had to get cut or switched around due to the dual screen of the DS. But I really felt like the whole "control 2 characters at once" thing was too much. The controlls on the android version are absolutely my favorite way to experience this game. Haven't tried the switch version yet, but I feel like the joycons and the bigger screen would also fuck me up. And the price tag is just a big no for me. The new content isn't even that amazing from what I have seen.
I love by far the ds version. But I have to say: I need them all
DS on Drastic is the best LMAO DS+Android
Yah ❤
Even though the ds and mobile are good.the switch version is way better with the audio and the fact that you can hear sounds that weren't in the original or mobile version
That’s because the ost was remixed for the switch.
@@philatio1744 but the gameplay on switch sucks though......
@@tekunachi216 meh, handheld mode is completely fine and was really fun. TV mode definitely was awkward at first, but I had a lot of fun co-oping alone and playing for both characters.
Great video. Just confirmed for me that the DS is really the best way to play.
Nothing is better than fiercely tapping your screen, shaking your console and screaming on it in a crowded subway.
Gameplaywise the DS version is still the best.
I love the title screen of Nintendo DS version of this game. Also, dual screen makes it unique and more fun.
Just downloaded this on my Vita. The music sounds awesome
the DS version gives me such nostalgia of playing the game on the school bus
Wow, very nice comparison
I also downloaded both DS and Android version , I found DS version better , because it's Art style and soundtrack .. where Android version is good port , but I found lack of menu option like *exit the game* some of songs is missing or doesn't play out... My thoughts is this game is made for touchscreen version but in two vertical display like old days (J2ME games have)
this game deserve more also I can't wait for *Anime Adaptation*
*Update :* you can play smoothly on Drastic in vertical by turn off DS gamepad
I started playing the DS version on my mobile yesterday and it's impossible to play with both screens, but the auto mode sucks and I have to do all the work with Neku, makes it fun though
@@barritu0106 just like you use your phone, same as use your thumb or finger to control character.
If you playing on Drastic DS Emulator , change the display settings to match up both Screen and hide the L and R Button which is completely useless
@@royalkumar795 thanks bro I'll try
so you're telling me the new ones cut the originals defining aspect? better visuals or not that's a nope from me
you still control both characters at the same time though? it being on one screen doesnt mean that part is gone ive played all three, they feel different but the core aspect is present in all of them
@@entermatestar9116 the puck pass system was replaced with this new thing, I loved having to split my brain in half to keep up attacks with both characters simultaneously, these ports basically take that, and turn them into pin skills, although funnily enough, since writing this comment I've discovered the ds version is the worst version of the game so now I don't really care about that particular change
@@entermatestar9116 You simply just focus on neku. Your partner feel more like a skill you can use than an actual character that you have to control
@@jehezz i completely disagree considering how insanely useful they are and how not using them can just fuck you over later in the game, unless youre a bitch that always plays at max level
What the heck happened to the combat? I've only played the DS version. How do the newer versions work?
It's just one screen and you simply focus on Neku. All partners are activated differently. Shiki is tapping enemies, Joshua is rubbing on the enemies, and i think Beat is sliding. You can fill up a sync bar if you hit the same time as your partner and unleash an all powerful attack
@@Andy-cu2rp thank you. Think the Switch version is any good?
@@jawnsushi Definitely, not worth the price however, look for a cheaper option if possible.
short answer : half the amount of screens, Half the amount of fun
Pins with voice RIP :(
I think that what makes the game really interesting is how you have to pay attention to both screens to control the characters, it's a mechanic I haven't seen in other games. The Switch and phone version are cool but they lack the feature that makes the game unique.
I'm wondering how the control of many characters simultaneously will be handled in NEO.
Ngl i hate how they didn't even for the 60€ switch version bothered to update the background characters but instead just "smoothed" the ds sprites again
Oh my gosh I forgot how we are able to interact with shiki in the ds version 😳, I just recently got the final remix for the switch
What do you mean by that?
Asking for a friend
I struggled so hard playing this on an emulator it has a Mobile Version?! Now i gotta play this again
The DS version has so much swag to it. but the frame rate on the switch version seems way to crisp. as well as teh touch screen on switch being just as good as its predecessors.
Neku Sakuraba is like a Vessel Memory of Sora in kingdom Hearts:Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Dream Drop Distance HD for PS4.
I understand the DS version is THE definitive way to play this game. But I might struggle with the frame rate a bit after coming from the Switch version.
I don't have a Switch! Do I want the DS or Mobile? Is the DS voice acted or just subbed?
Hmm, in some parts of the cutscemes its voice acted but its mostly texts. I havent tried the mobile version but to me the ds version was a good experience to me. If u ever decide on wanting to try playing the ds version, its possible to use ur phone to download Drastic Emulator (DS for mobile) and download the game rom on the site cdromance
None of them have full voice acting, so I recommend either DS or Switch. Switch is essentially a refined and better version of the Mobile version, with more content, and the best in my opinion. (Also play undocked it's so much easier.) If you care about the original combat controls a lot, play the DS, but that's the only reason to play the DS version in my opinion.
DS! First, it's the original and makes good use of both screens of the console.
Second, you control both characters at the same time, while on mobile (and Switch) only Neku is really playable.
There is some voice acting, but most of the dialogue is only written.
@@shinybearevidra I totally forgot I asked this! Thank you!
@@toriandtilly you're welcome! I didn't notice it was an old comment. Did you end up playing it? If yes, I hope you liked it!
Personally, Android/IOS is the best way to play it, because even if it detracts from the original gameplay of the ds, it still holds up well in being a fun (but tough at times) game. Plus, it feels much faster and you can rack up them combos much more efficiently than just the cursor or ds touch screen ever could.
But the switch version is an improved smart phone version. If you don't like joycons, you can just undock to make it exactly as the smartphone version. Personally, I miss the dual screen mechanics because that's what made TWEWY so amazing. A flash combination of action rpg, music, and pop visuals are really best done in the DS. The improved quality of sound and graphics are nice, but they detract from the original intentions and fail to capture what made TWEWY amazing to begin with.
Sean Flannery I’m gonna have to call BS on that considering how you get slowed down every time Neku unleashes a Cross Combo with his partner. DS version doesn’t have that problem at all.
Definitely not at all DS still better
Swoooooooosh
the pedestrians look horrendous in the android and switch ports.
I played the android version and had fun with it
I'm going to buy the DS version to play on my 3DS
I think it's the best way to play the game, what makes it challenging is (in my opinion) the control you have of two characters at the same time.
I also recommend listening to the soundtrack while you're playing, the OSTs are fire!
For everyone clouded by nostalgia by the ds ver is forgetting one KEY feature...how the hell are you gonna evolve certain pins on the ds in this day and age?? Good luck trynna "mingle" with other people, mobile and switch is just battle or shutdown to evolve.
I think they were referring the the overall quality of the DS, not including circumstances where the console is out of circulation or whose servers have been shutdown. Visually the game was better with the DS because the game was originally tailored for that specific device, which sort of helps sends out some of the messages of the story and further improve immersion. Some images were removed to make room for the one-screen format of later version.
In my opinion having to keep track of two separate screens helped evoke the struggles of the misanthropic/antisocial Neku being forced to work with another person.
MaruDofu Mingle gives you Aliens that will help give your pins a shit-ton of MPP, which is more than enough to evolve the ones that require it. Also, having Pictochat and a second DS helps.
Wish they developed a remix for the 3ds, using some pins conflicts with how to use your partners attack when playing in handled mode on switch lite.
The cartridges for DS and 3DS games are very similar and you can play the games for the older console on its successor, making a new version for the same console the original can be played doesn't sound like a successful move: the original game would probably cost less and a lot of the people who already own it wouldn't purchase the same thing with only minor adjustments for a device they can play the original on.
As cool as it could have been, it makes sense why it wasn't done.
i just want the new music honestly
Saludos 👍

I remember liking the DS and doesnt have any problem with the 2 screen...you telling me we doesnt need to do the partner's gimmick anymore? those are fun /.\
Why not make it portrait?
I could alternate between the switch and ds versions
This won't help anything, can some one guide me about this???
How many game does it have???
How many manga does it have(Though I think I already know that one)?????
How many anime series does it have???
I reeeeally wish they had implemented the duel screen somehow on the switch. The two screen combat is what made the game so unique, it really used the ds to its fullest potential.
ds looks way better then irl then compared to in this video
why does the ds one look so.. slow and low fps?
Android version has Coco... so i prefer that
For me, the ultimate version is the DS version.
Thanx goodness it is avaiable on Android now i was a dumbass for skipping this game on nds and the switch is just insanely expensive in Brazil but i heard that ppl also complain about the software prices in the entire world
I still prefer playing the original on an actual DS it’s a great time
Jeez it seems like you lose a lot by not playing the original version
They could have change the gameplay for the switch to play with the controller only.
it wouldn't work, at all.
DS is the best. 😶
can app go with horizontal ? i mean my phone can fit it
Yes? The app is horizontal only.
DS gots gameplay hands down!
DS is best
Да, тупа удобнее, всё происходит быстро, а не ждать всё время пока прогрузит диалог например. И напарник все время помогает, даже двоем можно играть. Почему не сделали порт на мобилку такой же вертикальный, но с лучшей графикой..
I like the switch it took some time to get used to it but the game was awsome
Idk what to get.
I could get the ds version, switch version, or the Android version
I NEED HELP
I strongly recommend the DS one more due to having all of the original combat mechanics thanks to the dual screens.
I'd go mobile for the cost. It's like $18 on the mobile, it's prettier and while you miss out on micro-managing two characters at once, you also don't have to pay the used premium price nor deal with the wrist and hand pain associated with the DS or Switch version. If you like the mobile one well enough you can go back and pick up the others for the gameplay gimmick. I found that I got through more of the game on mobile for the mentioned reasons and for me, story trumps gameplay most of the time.
Ds always
I think the ds version is better you just also need to buy the switch version too since it Adds a new day

In terms of gameplay, DS is the best, but in everything else, Switch wins by far. Reworked music, Official translations for European languages, an additional 3-day Chapter with more combat mechanics, etc. Making the Switch version the true Final Remix.
Ehhh man the main problem, is that if u look at the hd versions they lack full portrait arts. Meaning you are literally missing on character art because of the way they are cropped for a 16:9 window. U can tell easilu by the intro of how more u can see of the environments and characrers in the ds version. Thats a pretty big downgrade if u ask me
I'm sorry DS version fans, but Damn it. The Switch version spoiled me here with it's HD visuals and smooth frame rate.

i hope they rethink this decision if they truly decide to give us a sequel
