  • Another look at bagged garden products. I take a look at 4 bags of 'Garden Soil' from one company and walk you through understanding the products. Garden soil is the term for a category of soil that is to be used in garden beds and not containers. Prices vary a lot on bagged products but the core ingredients remain the same with a dash of fertilizers or bit more peat moss. I just want you to know what you are spending your money on.

    Just mix your own! A bag of Peat Moss, several bags of Scott Top Soil, and big bag of Perlite ... good to go. Then I just add various amendments like Green Sand, Azomite, blood meal, and bone meal. Then I feed granulated Calcium Nitrate and a small amount of Epsom Salt for Magnesium and for washing out the salts every so often. People waste sooooo much more money on these bagged mixes.

      The money you spend on all the fertilizers has to be high. Too much things to think about, I plant in compost, add two inches every year, mulch and throw in some all purpose here and there and stop mid summer, and I get great harvests. I think all the marketing they fed us make us believe we always need more and more stuff. A fertilizer for different types of plant, a product for every type of pest we all meet one day or another, it just never ends! I did the same the first few years, then I got tired of all the different products I had to deal with. So so simple now, and I get the same results!

    I noticed this awhile ago. Also, if you look at "top soil for filling holes" it has all the same products except no fertilizer. I added worm castings, bone meal, and fish emulsion and used that in my raised beds/containers. I did let it "age" because I could smell steer manure in it. The topsoil was $2.55/bag.

    Thanks Gary, for the direct comparison of ingredients over the same brand. This is exactly what I did a few years ago, to try to discern the difference. Miracle Grow is a popular brand name, and I confess I've used it a lot in the past because I couldn't afford to make any mistakes. The only mistake I made while comparing ingredients between MG products was assuming that there must be some difference that I wasn't understanding. Now I know I should've been more confident in my own research. And through watching your videos I've learned that there are cheaper ways to "make my own" that don't have to compromise quality or success. Thanks again!

    Thanks for putting out great content like this. I used your advise from an earlier video on filling raised beds and saved a ton of money! My new raised beds are 18 inches deep. So I put rotting logs in the bottom. Then lawn clippings, old wood chips I had from my previous gardens mulch, all of the compost I had been making for the last year, then the green bags of miracle grow garden soil, mixed in some peat moss, sheep manure, and some pearlite. I filled two 4’x6’x18” raised beds for about $130!

    I appreciate the comparison of ingredients & percentages. I wish you would have opened the bags & shown the soil. I find some soil has huge chunks of mulch in it. Others have finer shreds of mulch. Some have a good amount of perlite, others just a few specks.
    I basically buy busted bags of all kinds, & mix it together. For my containers, I add perlite, bone, blood, epsom salt, & lime. For fertilizer I may add a slow release, compost, worm castings. I’m still experimenting and learning a great deal from your channel.

    After adding a little fish emulsion and seaweed solution for fertilizing, all 4 that I tested, there was no noticeable difference in growth.

    If your garden center has the bagged soil in a more generic labeled bags made more locally, you can save about a dollar more over the national brands sold through the big box stores. My garden center sells "Five Way" an amendment made from composted animal coop and stall bedding, fine lumber bark, alfalfa and straw for $50 a yard, $28.00 a 1/2 yard for the larger garden. I used bagged as needed for the smaller strips. I've been using this and other peat based products in my garden the past 37 years in 4- year cycles for 37 years. My light colored sandy soil in my main 1200 sq. ft. plot has turned dark over this time period.

One thing I found is seasonally Aldi grocery store has 1 cubit foot bags of garden soil for 2.99. Typically in April or early May. I load up on it. Thank you Gary for the soil videos! I plan to grow canataloupes, watermelons, and cucumbers in containers. I feel more confident when buying bagged soil to fill my large containers. I bought peat based soil and bagged compost from a hydroponic store and I'm ready to fill them. Btw, I bought seedling trays from you...they're awesome...they're so sturdy unlike my flimsy Jiffy tray!

    Very good information. My mother inlaw bought regular indoor plant soil groom Steins Gardens and repotted her indoor plants, a week later she had an infestation of fungas knats, she had to call a bug control to rid her of them . She went to Steins they would not give her money back for soil and she had paper work from pest control that indeed knats were from soil in bags. So becareful, of no name products. Thanks again

    Just as your previous videos on this subject, very enlightening. So, now that you've taught us about this, what I really want to know is which brand has the finest garden soil in terms of structure. The Pro-mix is excellent but pricier. I am always wondering what is the best "Garden Soil" choice for my dollar. I dislike the ones with the very chunky wood. If not wood, what would they use to fill it? Compost? I also don't always trust the ones with "compost" cause it's like, what kind of compost is it. I was at a hardware store the other day and an employee was talking about how great the compost they sell is. He cut open a bag to show us. "See? It's still steaming. Stick your hand in there and feel how hot that is." Um...that's means it's not finished. So, basically, I can't trust the bags or the employees to know what's up. I guess it's up to Gary to tell us what the best, most affordable, nationally available garden soil product is!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      So I do recommend Pro-Mix blends if you don't like making your own. However, I also make mine from the Pro-Mix peat bales. That is just peat. And that is really inexpensive. And you are right on the compost for sure.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Good to know about the bales! So can I take that to mean that you aren't concerned about too much peat in the mix? I often find that it's actually kinda difficult to water deeply when there is a high percentage of peat. It is so effective at absorbing water that I put gallons of water in and still find the water hasn't made it deeply into the roots.

    Hey Gary! Love your videos. I just went to my local Home Depot and was told that the buyers at HD are phasing out the blocks of Peat Moss at this time. There are "some" stores that are still carrying it but when stock is depleted, it is very uncertain they will get more. I would have had to drive about 50 minutes to get to the nearest store which had some. Told the store manager that it was disappointing they wouldn't have it. She didn't seem phased one bit. Will be finding a new store (Lowe's) to shop at.

    This is my first year gardening and I was so confused by this. I got suckered into buying specific raised bed soil for my garden. I wasn't impressed with the various different types I tried. All of them were wet, heavy, clumpy mixes that seemed too dense for new roots to grow in. I will say the MG Performance container mix has been the only nice one. It's a lighter shade of brown instead of the almost-black of the other soils I've tried. It's also much finer milled and lighter. It doesn't turn into a hard, compact mess after watering either.

    Moisture retention is by the coco coir which drys out fast so it prevents root rot but requires regular moisture,not over soak if you can figure out how much water the dry pot takes before it begins to drip out the bottom then better thay than drenching in a “better be safe than sorry” all’s you will do is wash out the nutrients.

    I never buy soil. I buy a giant bale of Canadian peat moss for 15.00. I buy a pickup truckload of compost from a local place made with horse manure and wood chips for 60.00. I usually buy compost in the fall and rest it until spring in a covered enclosed metal container or I spread it on a hedge before I cover it. To make container soil I use our top soil which is a nice sandy loam and mix it with the peat and compost to achieve the consistency I am looking for. I usually have pretty good results I don't live near a box store so can't imagine running to the box store for multiple bags of soil.

    Incredibly informative as all of your videos that I've seen are! I do love those plant markers! Thank you for de mystifying the organics for us! I will say, I don't use Scott's products anyway( miracle grow, ortho, natures care etc) . My question is If we add a product with synthetic fertilizer to the planting space isn't that space no longer organically maintained and the plants would now have synthetic fertilizer in their cell walls?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому

      You could not say your are 100% organic. You could say you are 99% and choose to have an organic based garden, healthy food and know what you eat. I have tons of compost now. I use organic store bought stuff a lot less. I will use synthetic fertilizer when need, especially in containers. Enjoy your garden, and be as organic as you can.

    I've found most bags of "soil" are almost 50% sticks and wood. I made a sifter to get that junk out, decomposing wood sucks nitrogen from your soil short term.

  • @caitlinlindseysfamilyvideo7706

    Hi, love your advice, thank you for all your videos. About dirt issues, All the directions say mix bagged with native dirt, but when I build up a garden bed, trees and shrubs, I am starting from scratch with very little native dirt to work with. I installed 2 dwarf arborvitaes. One in mostly native dirt mixed with bagged soil and one was planted primarily with bagged dirt because I needed a berm (miracle grow garden soil or premium
    equivalent). The one with primarily bagged dirt is failing. And, I find when using this method, I can easily pull plants out of the ground, the dirt is too fine and seems to retain too much water also. The family-owned garden center said it's not meant for berm building, so how do I make this right, Should I dig it all out, and mix native (mostly clay) soil dug up from somewhere else in my yard. What would be a suitable substitute - use bags of cheap topsoil to fill holes and mostly sand and such. Can't find anyone addressing this issue so any advice would be great.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Рік тому

      I am not sure. Usually just means blend the bagged stuff well with soil in and around the planting hole. If that is working, you might have to dig it it out and blend whatever you buy with you clay. The other option, if you have space, is to check with landscape companies and get a compost soil drop.

    In the UK we only have topsoil or compost. It’s hard to find bagged potting soil or mix.
    Also, almost none of our bagged compost list the npk or ingredients on the bag. Not to mention, it’s almost impossible to find peat moss in stores.
    You guys in the USA have it so good…
