      Never have any fertilizers on sale where I live Zone 9a Central CA., ever just because we don't have a real winter like you do! Ack! So I like the Espoma Tomato Tone so that's what I use for granular. If I ever catch anything on sale I'll try to get it. Thanks for teaching common sense and what is really going on here. BTW I like good composted chicken or steer manure or local landfill diversion compost. Those are cheap.

    This video was very helpful to me. I've been using garden tone for the last few years thinking because it was lower in nitrogen than my previous fertilizer, I would get shorter more productive tomatoes and other veggies. I haven't noticed any difference. I recently started adding the organic alfalfa pellets and incorporating them into my raised beds. It's too early to tell if that is helping, but so far so good. I am afraid to buy compost. So far I haven't ruined any beds with that, but I have found chucks of plastic and other human trash items in it. They claim it's chicken manure and mushroom compost. I have already infested one of my beds with some free horse manure from a local stable that was apparently from animals that were fed hay that had been sprayed with amino pyrolid herbicide. It took three years before i could successfully grow in that bed again , but now it's back to doing well. Thank goodness I didn't put it in all of my raised beds. Fertilizers are definitely way overpriced to the average gardener. Thanks for the video.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Рік тому +1

      Alfalfa and garden tone is good mix. Buying compost is so hard as you really have to go to the local source and ask questions. When you get space, leaf compost for the win.

    Like you say, you can make these mixtures yourself. I got a bunch of big bags of Garden Tone on sale a few years ago, and then got a small bag each of bone meal and blood meal for phosphorus heavy-root plants and nitrogen-heavy leaf plants, respectively.

    Gary, I also love Espoma fertilizer. I wish I could find that large bag of Plant Tone. But I've had that smaller bag of Plant Tone for the past two summers and I still have enough to get started next year. I learned from Laura and Aaron from Garden Answer that it does not matter which Espoma you use. And they work with the company. Thank you for sharing this information with us.

    Thank you for your service Gary!! 💪I think I remember last year or so you did a video on fertilizer and suggested the plant tone, I’ve been using it ever since with great success! Even as a gardener it can be overwhelming in the fertilizer section🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ for instance, my son got me a citrus tree last year and I went straight to the garden section to get A fertilizer specific for citrus trees and man was it overwhelming!! Ended up getting citrus tone, and yes not using as much! Thank you for educating us! 💪👏💓🥕🥦🍎🥬🍊🍓

    Since I garden at the community garden in an elevated bed, I have to add soil every year. This year, along with the garden soil, I added composted chicken manure. The fertilizer that I have is from a couple years ago. I hardly needed to use any fertilizer. My tomatoes were kind of late producing; but, I managed to get quite a few tomatoes. I used a lot of the green tomatoes to make fermented tomatoes and have a bunch of ripe tomatoes dehydrating. I didn't get a lot of peas; probably, because I didn't plant many. My beans did so much better this year than last. My bed has a limited size and I can grow things; but, not everything that I would like to.

      Fertilizer can never expire. As the goal is for it to decay. NPK and all that doesnt expire. Which is good.

    I agree and still believe that plants don’t know the difference between organic vs non-organic. I do know that organic does help with soil health and can help with disease, and some better uptake. For organic, I do like you and buy the cheapest I can find. If I can’t find something on sale, a 40# bag of Coop Poop at 2-4-3 is what I buy at $20 a bag.

      Plant absolutely can tell difference between NPK of organic or people processed. Its another myth. You cant make fake NPK. Organic ferts like these in the video, do minimum benefit for soil life. They just dont have the organic matter bulk like compost.

      Walmart and amazon. I keep a tab open for organic fertilizers and just refresh when I want to check for sales on amazon. I watch closely in the fall and winter.

    Got a ? If you have time to answer, Had my soil analyzed, my phosphorus was way high the rest a little high but my issues the phosphorus so spring I'm planning on just a high nitrogen application nothing else oh and PS my organic matters a little high my question is do you have a potion for a zinc and iron foliage spray what I've been reading is what I need to do your thoughts would be greatly appreciated thank you in advance if you can squeeze me in I don't know why phosphorus is so high I'll get it figured out

      Nothing on that type of spray. Yeah I would just give nitrogen. Let the phosphorous get used. It is hard to know what you phosphorous is from unless you also did a test when it was not a garden and track what goes in each year.

    Thank you for this!! Does the same apply for liquid fertilizer? I’m planting greens and herbs indoors in small pots this cold season and I want to use liquid fertilizer.

    • @aquaseahorselove3939
      @aquaseahorselove3939 Рік тому +1

      Yes same. Just dilute the fertilizer more when they’re seedlings.

      Liquid varies more or the water-soluble types. Still check out the ingredients. Fish emulsion works well. And I now recommend Agrothrive which is linked in the video description.

    Isn’t all the excess chemical nitrogen bad for the environment. Homemade compost for the win.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Рік тому

      Compost is best. Excess nitrogen is bad if it is washing into the street, to sewers and to waterways. Nitrogen on the earth garden beds, that has no where to wash, gets used up quickly. Like when people cover their lawns in nitrogen and a big storm comes. That is bad.
