Let's Build and Tune an Art Deco Speaker Cabinet

  • In this video we will merge two old, vintage speaker cabinets into one that has an Art Deco flair appropriate to be used with the scratch-built Tremolux amplifier featured in a recent video series on this channel. Once the speaker cabinet is finished, we modify the amount of back panel it has, checking the tone changes associated with each alteration.....until the best possible configuration is determined. Afterwards, we'll all take a break and go to a local hot rod show.

    I find "speaker science" absolutely fascinating. Some speakers can play in a smaller cab, others need larger. Some can handle lots of power, others can't. Some benefit from a port, some don't, etc.
    To me it's a lovely blend of art & physics, like a fine watch.

      .......and I find that trial and error is the best way to fine tune the cabinets, Richard. Theory is nice, but nothing beats some good old experimentation.

    Uncle Doug, I have been going thru your old videos and they are just amazing. While watching this one a thought came to mind. I pictured someone in the future finding your custom amps and cabinets, going through all the vintage catalogs trying to identify the model numbers, pulling their hair out.especually when you use parts from different cabinets to make one.

    She's a thing of beauty! What a nice set you've created. It's obvious that you have art in your soul, between this, the car work and the aerial videos it's really apparent. I find that the metal dust caps tend to make speakers directional. Unless the speaker says James B. Lancing, you want to get rid of those beamers.
    FYI, those mounting studs are available from Antique Electronics and well worth the money.

    Very nice Doug. You know, aircraft radios usually have two jack sizes for headsets. The phones use the standard quarter inch but the cord for the mic and push to talk switch use the smaller jack and plug. Makes it easy to know what to plug where.

    The amp and cab are so gorgeous that it barely matters how they sound! (Duck and cover) I think you're right about the sound of the split back panel. I'll be building a 4 X 8" cab fairly soon, so I'll try some variations, but the split seems to have sound benefits over the closed and opened versions, and it's definitely more mechanically sound than the open.

    • @UncleDoug

      Thanks, Mark. The idea of a 4 x 8" cabinet is very appealing to me. I recall being astounded by the great tone from the multiple small speakers in the Electromuse (previous video). The back really does need to be open for guitar use.

    Hi Uncle Doug--nice job as usual. Speaker cabinets can often benefit by being stuffed with ordinary polyester pillow stuffing, which, acoustically speaking, makes the cabinet larger. Filling to a density of 1/2 to 1 pound of stuffing per cubic foot of enclosure is usually about right. Not only will the polyester fiberfill make the cabinet larger, it will also result in a smoother sound by reducing standing waves in the cabinet.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  6 років тому

      Thanks, R. That's a very interesting suggestion. I never realized that reducing the air space would make the cabinet behave as if it were larger. It seems counter-intuitive, but I trust your opinion and may well try this.

    Wow, I love what you did with the amp and cab, they look incredible. As far as the sound test goes- there are just so many variables that make it difficult to determine what your whole rig is capable of. But I think it's safe to say that a high quality guitar speaker is going to perform better than the vintage one you have there. And I just thought I'd mention that I have modern 12" cabinets that are about the same size as yours, and with a completely closed back and Turbosound 12" speaker they sound very good to my ears.

    Volkswagon: My brother and I rebuilt dozens of those "pancake" engined models. They came in sedan, fastback, and wagon styles. I remember hauling many engines and parts in my old Willys Jeep. Great job, the silver Ampro lettering ties the two pieces together nicely. I would like to see how the two pieces look when stacked up piggy back style. As far as speaker directivity, directionality, objectivity and acoustics are concerned the variables are countless and third party opinions are tough. I read that when sound engineers asked Mr. Marshall how he calculated what size cabinet to use in his famous 4x12 model 1960 speaker, he responded, "I just used used the smallest box that would hold four twelve inch speakers.

      Thanks for the positive comments, Paul. You're right......it's all subjective, but I do think that a partially open back seems to work best for guitar, and agree that huge cabinets are simply not necessary.

      :) Seems I have more ideas than time these days. Most "garage" hobbies are going into hibernation for a bit. Came home to 2" of snow on the lawn tonight. Soldering with mittens on really sucks.
      Started dabbling with Transmission Line speaker designs though, folded horns and such. Trying to muster up every bit of efficiency to pair with an SE triode set-up. Lots of math, lots of uncertainty, R&D, trial and error experiments... should keep me outta trouble over the winter. :)

    Oh...tin dust cover. That'll help with treble some...but probably just straight out in front of the cabinet. I may be all wet, but I think that's how it will work. Wow! What a difference
    in directionality 'tween the three back options. And I agree the open 1/3 in the middle sounds best.

    The two look great together but I think I would have went with painting the grill and the stripes silver to match the head more also if you omitted the top handle and put handles on the sides you could then set the head on top

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  6 років тому

      Actually, the head fits perfectly on top since the handle is very low profile. I should have included a view of them stacked. I really considered going with silver, Doug, but couldn't resist the gold. It can always be changed when I replace the speaker.

      @dougthetechguy5005 6 років тому +2

      Oh okay well that's cool you can still stack it....yeah I would have like to see it silver to match the head, you did such an awesome job on that head it would have just been icing on the cake if the speaker matched the head completely you could always put some brass on the head to draw the colors together

      I Agree BUT The Gold looks equally as good However that being said the two colors should be matched- Gold OR Silver Like I said I can not make up my mind I Really like them both!! as longs and they match-The head kind of reminds me of the passenger trains from when they were at their Peak! Looks GREAT yeah ok SILVER Top and Bottom is my pick_ GREAT WORK AS ALWAYS!!

      Wow.....thanks so much for the very nice comments, PD. I do use the same guitar and shop speaker for every video, and have for many years. The guitar is a 1980 Vantage V-695 that I rescued from a pawn shop years ago for a pittance, and found that, after doing some repairs, it was my favorite guitar in the world. I have had and sold a bunch of high-grade Fenders and Gibson LP's, but have always kept the Vantage. It's like an old friend that never lets me down.

    Uncle Doug, I like your eye for design. We agree that modern giant wheels don't look good on older vehicles. Although I am fine with a 16 or 17 in the right style and tire combo. Thanks for the followup with that VW owner! Happy to see the engine bay as clean as the exterior. That's not always the case. I scored an Arvin hi-fi amplifier on the bay today. I saw it randomly at 99 cents with 30 minutes left. I couldn't let it go for that cheap, so I picked it up. No clue what I'll do with it, probably fix'er up original, find a cheap record player and ask to borrow my mom's copy of Inna Gadda Da Vida :)

    Nice dovetail with the Amp build ! As you rightly mention, trying to judge speaker quality in a video with camcorder microphones is a crap shot at best although I use pretty reasonable playback speakers at home. The quality of most viewers probably varies from 2X2 desktop speakers to systems that are played in their high end home stereo components.
    I would offer the following comments and are both personal observations. The speaker came though on my system as very bass dominant and frankly sounded like the dedicated purpose, organ speakers. My second thought was since you went with the Gold trim on the speaker cabinet, you might want to see if there is a local anodizing company that could match the amp aluminum pieces to go that extra step ! But as I'm fond of saying, it is easy to spend other peoples money....
    You've been knocking 'em out of the park recently with your builds and I enjoy them and share your humor of the world as we stumble through it.

    The speaker cabinet came out great! All it takes is skill and imagination to make something good happen. Your creative ideas are always intriguing. The overall sound is OK, but it lacks that certain tone that's needed for a guitar. I think putting a Jensen Special Design 12 in the cabinet with the split back may be the magic (Fender) formula! It's true about a sealed back cabinet creating good forward projection, but not much on the sides or rear. Also, a sealed enclosure makes the speaker stiff sounding and less efficient, and it will require more amplifier power to compensate. You could also try to install a circular vent port with a full back, but that's more for Hi-Fi applications rather than guitar/instrument use. Usually speaker enclosures are designed around the parameters of a particular speaker using the small Theile parameters, (SPL, free air resonance) etc, but I've heard many good sounding enclosures built by trial an error! I'm curious to hear the outcome when the new speaker arrives. :)

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  6 років тому +1

      Thanks, Frank. The new Jensen C12N arrived today and is already installed. It makes the poor old Heppner sound even more like a rented mule. I had to leave off the vibrating screen behind the grille, and add felt to both sides of the handle to stop it from vibrating. It's a monster :)

    I'm not sure if you still have this setup, but I would be interested to hear how it sounds if you pack the enclosure with poly-fill (available at your local Joanne Fabrics or similar). Start with a light pack and increase the amount until it's semi dense with fill. That should cut the boxiness sound down and bring out the lower end.
