Good honest review Jim. With regard to efficiency I've never worried in my Modal 3 LR. I got the car when it was three years old (15500 on the clock)and reset the mileage odometer and it's telling me that I've achieved, on average' 3.5 Kw per mile so no big deal. I can live with that.

You are the only reviewer who mentioned about the auto wipers, I cannot agree more! I rented an M3 for a week in Toronto, straight out of the airport, I immediately struggled with the air vents as the car starts to mist and i almost crashed trying to find the blower setting while already on a motorway! Also immediately struggled with its navigation because it didn't have signal and the car doesn't do CarPlay/AndroidAuto! I wonder what network is Tesla UK with? I recently went to Cornwall and Vodafone is hopeless where as EE is fine. Me and wife are always on different network for back up, but Tesla doesn't do phone connections! I also wonder what data roaming will it do while in Europe? lastly I think it will help your car to recalibrate battery if you drain it low and recharge to 100%. LFP battery has a very flat voltage curve below 80%, unlike NMC. So the car needs to count the amount of current charged to 100% to recalibrate range estimates.
I'm not sure renting a Tesla as a first timer is ever going to be a great experience. Things like vents are tied to your driver profile so you really never have to touch them. The wipers are a letdown but they have been improved a bit. The GPS doesn't need a network except for live traffic so there's something weird going on there. If there is no premium connectivity (possibly the case with a rental) then you go to wireless and connect your phone via hotspot. Then all the things like Spotify will work - the phone itself should be connected via bluetooth for hands free. All that should have been done before you set off but rental places tend to just give you the keys and tell you nothing.
I’m still loving my Y RWD after a year. I would have another. I just drive mine and plug it in most nights. According to the app I’ve saved £800 compared with petrol over the year, oh and my wipers work really well.

A very balanced review and you nailed it right at the top - an EV really only makes sense if you can charge from home. Live in a terrace, flat, etc it's not viable yet.
The range in miles you talk about when you toggle the battery icon between % and miles doesn’t vary with conditions or driving efficiency. It is a simple calculation of Teslas static presumed efficiency multiplied by what the car believes is the available capacity of the battery in kWh. So when it reduces it is an Indication of the degradation of the battery. The battery management can get a bit out of sync depending on your charging patterns and this is why it is recommended to charge the LFP models to 100% at least once a week to help keep that calibration accurate.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru you're 100% on the wipers. They are almost useless and are definitely camera based. I wouldn't hold out hope of the proper rain sensor ever being added. They are hell bent on removing rather than adding hardware. It's not too annoying when you can toggle manually, as you say, but if any kind of proper auto or full self driving becomes viable here then it will be more of an issue because that functionality requires the wipers to be on auto. By the way, after you soft press the wiper button you can use the left scroll wheel rather than the screen to adjust the wiper speed.
You might appreciate the insurance group if you have an accident. We have a number of them on the fleet and the smallest knock costs thousands as there are only a limited number of repairers that can work on them. It really needs sorting.
Plenty can work on them really it’s just insurers insist on writing off anything with any battery damage - battery packs can be repaired relatively simply by specialists and seldom actually need replacing.
Excellent video, as usual. Giving us all the relevant information but there is one point I would like you to clarify. Is your Mii the size of a large lady's handbag or a lady's large handbag?
I loved the Y test drive but unfortunately not big enough for us. Model X would have been nice but no RHD and far more expensive than the Kia. I love the flat charging profile on the Kia. On my Audi I had to arrive at 10% to get anywhere near peak charging. Now it’s near enough anywhere below 80%.
Hi Jim , great video. For people with experience, would you go for this or the dual motor version and why please other than the range of course ? Thankyou in advance
I have a model 3 duel motor, it's done over 44k on the sames tyres, it's for business use, the indicators are ridiculously annoying staying on all the time after turning! It's fast and cost peanuts to charge at home, but in short it's as exciting as a dishwasher, my other car a CLS 63 bi turbo cost £380 to insure, good video as ever James!
Mid 40s, 21 plate model 3 LR, 13 years NCB elsewhere. But admiral charge me as a Company car £758 and could have been £680 if I didn’t change the start date. (My personal NCB can’t be used on company car or mirrored with admiral).
Have you received the latest firmware update for your MODEL Y? I got mine a month ago and haven't noticed any updates yet. I heard that the wiper issues have been resolved.
Looks a nice car, I wonder what the refresh holds for it. Not sure if anyone has mentioned in the comments but a few people on social media last night / today were saying the Tesla Referral Program had returned but don’t know if that is correct.
Good review Jim and the dislikes chime with me also. The wipers really annoy me . I’ve had RWD and currently have AWD on the 20 inch can’t say I felt much difference in ride quality.
Interesting Video. Calculations on TCO would be interesting as this would be the real world cost. I am guessing the model Y circa £45k. Kia Sportage (or Similar) circa £30k. Insurance , fuel costs (electricity), tyres, servicing, residual value and so on. Maybe over 3 years, possibly 4.
Agree with all your comments - especially auto-wipers and the 19" wheels being gthe ones ot go for. No car is perfect (and eveyrone has unique needs), but there is room for improvement and/or standard features that should be there now (given everyone else is fast catching up) I do think boot-open should be simpler... I haven't yet foudn out how to open the boo from inside easily when seomone is bringin stuff to the car. It should be a button on the door. Locking/unlocking the car form insise is fiddlyh, you have to click a vey small icon on display. For soem people who are claustrophibic this is a big deal... shoudl be a button. Icons on display in general are small/fiddlyh... even in larger type mode icons are still small. I'd like ventialted seats (perhaps massaging as wel, bu mainly venitklated) I don't lke that all colours except white are a BIG premium, as is white interior. All it means is you see White ones everywhere!... which makes it "common". Could do with a light grey interior option imo. Centre console has no proper compartments to organse stuff (you have to buy after-market sliding trays) Boot has no luggage hooks for shopping or dividers Boot cover is annoying... should be roller blind style, and should store under floor. The standard 19" allow wheels aactually look great, but are covered by earo plasitc covers that are not so nice, and don;t cover the wheeel rim, so you still scratch it (unless oyu buy what you id, as I did too)... but I don;t think you shoudl have to... just make a decent looking aero alloy, and forget the trims. No front foglights (unless you get the long-range or performance) Still miss a driverdisplay, but head-up would be a good alternative - it;s crying out for it. Satnav - mixed results.. I don;t think it alwys chooses the fastes route... even tho it is programmes to. good for charge stops/route plannig, but not so much the daily commute. No rear wiper - yes it gets dirty and rain does NOT flow off it... just fit one. If really cannot make THATG must difference ot drag? Efficiency - yes probably best in class, but word is the standard range is software-locked to not use all the battery.. and you can PAY to have it unlocked. Just unlock it for free, for everyone! Premium audio £10/month - really?... on a car of this cost - you don tlget traffic alerts on GPS without premium. Just build it into the price of the lease/purchase, but Tesla a eprobablky paying opeanure for data anyway, so it shoudl be free. Car is slow to unlock when you approach with phone as yourkey. you have to wait for it to wake up, meanwhile Sentry mode is giving you the eye!... and it's telling you to swipe the keycard. It should detect you within 3m range and be ready when you touch door handle. Phantom braking in auto-pilot even on local roads, when ther eis no obstruction. It;s sensing somehting but not sure what. All minor gripes, but do make a difference when yoi live with them every day.
Great review, as much as I like the car, I could never get use to having just an iPad in the middle of the dash, so will stick with my HEV Kia Sportage! Lovely dash!
Everything confuses the wipers, I have covered 100k in my m3, wipers are crap, headlights are less crap than they used to be. Handling is questionable, I also agree that charging is now too quick, it’s a nice problem to have.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru it’s all too easy on bumpy rural roads to get it seriously out of shape body control wise, headlights take too long to come back on after they have dipped for oncoming cars and Tesla have removed the ability to which to manual control easily. They are not suitable for making rapid progress on unlit rural roads.
You don't have to wash and wipe, just touch it gently and it'll wipe once and bring up menu or programme wheel button to do wipers. I've mine set to acceleration chill or sport and wiper sensitivity is garbage although good clearing the screen on the model 3 too, however I do like the car overall and particularly the ease of everything in terms of key phone app and range/performance
I’ve had my model Y SR for 31/2 years now and it will be the first time I’ll ever be replacing a car with the same one when I trade this one in next March
Well ok, yes, but only for relatively few for quite some time. It’s pretty recent that the rollout has gone up a level. Do you know if I caveated every word I say in these videos they’d be even longer and even more tedious.
Hi Jim. Do you think I can save if i dont have Home charger but have at Work 7kw free charger working 4x a week and have tesla supercharger around the corner? Cheers!
Depends on how miles you do but if you can charge for free at work you are likely to save an absolute fortune. My average petrol bill was around £115 per month and now I only spend £15 however I am a home charger and I’m charging at 7p per kWh.
@@stevecarr3019 i only travel 10 miles going to work. And going long drive maybe 2-4 times a year. Tesla supercharger is around the corner of my house. I leave in a flat though thats why. And 4 - 7kw chargers are in my work place free.
The range you see is estimated EPA range. How you drive or what wheels you have makes no difference. You got a little degradation, that's it. Next week I had my MY RWD for a year. I think I have about 4% degradation after 14400 km and about 30% rapid charging. Its got the BYD battery. The most annoying problem for me hand down is the ghost breaking. It got a lot worse with the update in May.
The 283 miles range is using the WLTP standard and the 260 mile range is using the EPA standard as used in the USA. Yes you have lost 3 miles due to battery degredation.
It would be a concern to me that there is only 1 insurance company that will insure you in your situation? Really one? They can set their own price or simply 1 becomes zero then what do you do!
One on the comparison sites, don’t forget I have a fairly weird occupation too as far as insurers are concerned. I’ve got a massive network of contacts from my 25 years in the insurance industry if I needed it. Zero concern for me.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Spent ages watching all your EV video's and ended up going for the Tesla. The deals on the Kona were amazing but boot was just too small for the family.
Why has it not caught fire yet ,I've just bought 2020 M3 SR+ when can I expect it to catch fire................. all tongue in cheek loving my M3 for £18,000.
Well I-ve never done 100%-0% , probably never had it under 20% in fairness but I'd say 210-230 on the Motorway is realistic as long as you're not doing 80 all the way. Keeping it under oir at the speed limit makes a huge difference.
UK I've got one of the one's with the long range battery that's locked to 260miles from what i can work out. Still LFP chemistry cause tesla want me to fully charge the battery once per week to calibrate the mileage and the battery.
if you can charge at home it's a no-brainer, if not then it depends what routes you drive, my favourite feature is that the car is getting better and better over time with updates, roughly about every 6-8 weeks
I do a daily commute of 24 miles round trip so only 120 miles a week to and from work and then another (probably) 50 miles tootling about locally. Yes, I have a driveway so definitely going to get a home charger too
@@markanthonyharrison5153 one more thing to consider - you might drive more than usual with EV - my case - we drove about 2500km monthly, with Model Y we are doing now 4000km a month, we no longer feel restricted by fuel prices and our carbon footprint
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I just checked and it has increased a lot in the last 2 months. I was using a hybrid of Tesla at full price and Ionity subscription. It is tempting to now ditch the Ionity since the Tesla coverage is superior and subscribe to the Tesla scheme to bring the cost down.
Lots of speculation about pay-per-mile (for EVs maybe for all cars), since the lack of fuel duty revenue is sending the treasury into a rage. Factor in pay-per-mile, road tax on EVs next year (inc luxury car tax on many) and insurance, do you think there will still be any financial gain over ICE cars?
The running costs are still a plus. Almost nothing. I sold my 7yr old Landrover velar to get a model 3. The velar costs 1500 to insure. Running costs not factored in. 600 for my M3. Got the wife a MY SR. So far so good. We staggered charges weekly. No luxury tax. Quids in
I have to turn the wipers off too. I just push the screen wash button on the stalk and then scroll down to off on the left dial of the steering wheel, no need to touch the screen. I’ve had a model 3 for 3 years in December on a company lease. The cars great, the tech is fantastic. One year in I thought I would never buy another brand, 3 years later I’m a little bored of it, the model Y new shape isn’t until next year. It feels like Tesla stagnated after Elon shifted his focus more to X. I think they’ve allowed the competition to catch up quite a bit over the last 3 years. I now find myself with a Kia EV9 on order. The tech isn’t too far off, they actually have some wins over Tesla and the design of the car is better.
How did we ever see where we are going before auto wipers . Oh yeah we just turned are wipers on some of these automated systems are absolute pointless
Impossible to have these cars as the insurance is disgusting picked up a brand new Model Y Performance from Manchester Septmember 2023, swapped over our last policy to the MY no more premium needed 4 months later renewal came through £4800 ?!?!??!?!?!
Well this one didn’t. I’ve been reviewing cars for a few years now in this is not a firm ride compared to many. I disagree with a lot of car reviews by the way but I suppose I’m not a publication relying on ad revenue from legacy manufacturers; or I just have a different opinion.
It’s hilarious that whenever you look at a non Tesla and the dealer sees you Tesla outside they say they are a “software company” and don’t know how to make cars! Unfortunately for the legacy OEMs Tesla DO know how to make cars! Shame Musk is a “challenging” individual to like?! You’ll soon hit 50,000 and you’ll deserve it!

@DefinitelyNotAGuru Insurers are the problem. For one of our model 3's, we were quoted less than half the price than the approved repairer.
Because the insurer can only use new parts and has to guarantee everything for 2 years - video coming on this soon.
Great video thanks. Love a long term review. Does the lack of physical buttons cause any annoyances in any way or does the screen do the job?
It really doesn’t at all. Voice commands work great
Excellent video, as usual. Giving us all the relevant information but there is one point I would like you to clarify. Is your Mii the size of a large lady's handbag or a lady's large handbag?
😂alarge ladies handbag (which was my nickname at school) 👜
Agree with most of your points, great review thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
You can change wipers quickly now by holding down left button on steering wheel then you can cycle through speeds or set it to auto
Yeah - I'd just rather they worked as they should
Collecting mine tomorrow on that cracking lease deal.
If only we'd known about this at the time...ts.la/james140432
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Yes bad timing, but used your link and referral code for GAP insurance though. 👍
I've owned my model Y RWD since last December love all of ut maybe except the head rest?
I like the head rest but am aware that we will have different heads 😆
I loved the Y test drive but unfortunately not big enough for us. Model X would have been nice but no RHD and far more expensive than the Kia. I love the flat charging profile on the Kia. On my Audi I had to arrive at 10% to get anywhere near peak charging. Now it’s near enough anywhere below 80%.
👍👍
Hi Jim , great video. For people with experience, would you go for this or the dual motor version and why please other than the range of course ? Thankyou in advance
I think this version gives you the best bang for your buck and has LFP battery. All versions are good though.
Thankyou - appreciated
You'd go for the LR or P for acceleration speed and range of course. They are also all wheel drive.
Referral programme is back.
Got my M3LR in 2019. Charging speed saw 260kW (for a nanosecond) last week. My new record.
Someone else just said that, it’s still not on my app. I’ll have to check it out on the website.
you got a new subs mate!! might order the car later too. Cheers
👍👍
I have a model 3 duel motor, it's done over 44k on the sames tyres, it's for business use, the indicators are ridiculously annoying staying on all the time after turning! It's fast and cost peanuts to charge at home, but in short it's as exciting as a dishwasher, my other car a CLS 63 bi turbo cost £380 to insure, good video as ever James!
😂😂 indicators have never been an issue on this. I bet that CLS hasn’t done 44k on a set of tyres eh - nice motor 👍
there is a setting for indicators to turn automatically off when you finish the turn (works way better than on my previous Subaru Outback)
Mid 40s, 21 plate model 3 LR, 13 years NCB elsewhere. But admiral charge me as a Company car £758 and could have been £680 if I didn’t change the start date. (My personal NCB can’t be used on company car or mirrored with admiral).
👍👍 postcode is a massive factor too
Have you received the latest firmware update for your MODEL Y? I got mine a month ago and haven't noticed any updates yet. I heard that the wiper issues have been resolved.
Oh really? Ours is on v12 2024.26.7
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru still on V12.2024.20
Looks a nice car, I wonder what the refresh holds for it. Not sure if anyone has mentioned in the comments but a few people on social media last night / today were saying the Tesla Referral Program had returned but don’t know if that is correct.
Yes, several here saying that too. Its still not on my app and I’ve had no email yet but it seems like good news 👍
Yes. The referral program is back. £1000 off for recipient and you get £500 worth of incentives. Still trying to persuade my younger brother. Lol.
Good review Jim and the dislikes chime with me also. The wipers really annoy me . I’ve had RWD and currently have AWD on the 20 inch can’t say I felt much difference in ride quality.
👍
Interesting Video. Calculations on TCO would be interesting as this would be the real world cost. I am guessing the model Y circa £45k. Kia Sportage (or Similar) circa £30k. Insurance , fuel costs (electricity), tyres, servicing, residual value and so on. Maybe over 3 years, possibly 4.
👌
I can't believe how time flies when you have an EV
😁
Probably on account of all that daydreaming you can do whilst waiting for EVs to charge 😂
@@nicholashardy8735 oh dear
Don't be sorry for talking about something you know about thanks for video Jim
Thank you 👍
Just coming up on a year with my model 3 (old shape) and I often describe it as so good it’s boring. It’s generally just great at everything.
Great way to describe it 👍
Agree with all your comments - especially auto-wipers and the 19" wheels being gthe ones ot go for. No car is perfect (and eveyrone has unique needs), but there is room for improvement and/or standard features that should be there now (given everyone else is fast catching up)
I do think boot-open should be simpler...
I'd like ventialted seats (perhaps massaging as wel, bu mainly venitklated)
I don't lke that all colours except white are a BIG premium, as is white interior. All it means is you see White ones everywhere!... which makes it "common".
Could do with a light grey interior option imo.
Centre console has no proper compartments to organse stuff (you have to buy after-market sliding trays)
Boot has no luggage hooks for shopping or dividers
Boot cover is annoying... should be roller blind style, and should store under floor.
No front foglights (unless you get the long-range or performance)
Still miss a driverdisplay, but head-up would be a good alternative - it;s crying out for it.
After the recent firmware updates my wipers seem to have been magically cured! no phantom braking in mine.
Thanks for your honest observations and I would subscribe but cant as I already have!😀
That's no excuse Mike 😂
Great review, as much as I like the car, I could never get use to having just an iPad in the middle of the dash, so will stick with my HEV Kia Sportage! Lovely dash!
👍
Everything confuses the wipers, I have covered 100k in my m3, wipers are crap, headlights are less crap than they used to be. Handling is questionable, I also agree that charging is now too quick, it’s a nice problem to have.
Handling? Really??? I think it’s great in the M3, never had an issue with headlights on our car to be fair 👍👍
👌
this was really interesting. have you got a videoo about insuring an Ev through a business. My in-law is looking to do so.
No, it's pretty straightforward though. Just do it exactly as you always have but note the owner and registered keeper as a LTD company.
Yes, I said that in the video to be fair, I just pressed the button too hard.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru sorry, missed that, love your content, great vid thank you
I’ve had my model Y SR for 31/2 years now and it will be the first time I’ll ever be replacing a car with the same one when I trade this one in next March
👍👍
The sensor on my Ford Kuga is also useless, but at least I can turn it off and use the manual intermittent settings.
I can too
Regarding the super chargers, only some Tesla supercharger locations are open to other car manufacturers 🙂
Quite a lot now though eh?
In the UK, the Tesla charging network started to open up to non-Tesla’s since May 2022
Well ok, yes, but only for relatively few for quite some time. It’s pretty recent that the rollout has gone up a level.
Do you know if I caveated every word I say in these videos they’d be even longer and even more tedious.
your driving mode varies the usage number I think.
👍
Hi Jim. Do you think I can save if i dont have Home charger but have at Work 7kw free charger working 4x a week and have tesla supercharger around the corner? Cheers!
Yeah maybe and the inconvenience factor is obviously not an issue then.
I don’t have an issue with it personally
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Ghost braking or degradation? :)
The 283 miles range is using the WLTP standard and the 260 mile range is using the EPA standard as used in the USA. Yes you have lost 3 miles due to battery degredation.
I have
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I have lost 7 miles in 18 months on my MY RWD so 3 isn't bad.
Picking mine up on Tuesday, no money down and £446 a month at 0 APR was a better deal than any other similar sized EV.
👍
Where was this from at 0 APR? Thanks
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Spent ages watching all your EV video's and ended up going for the Tesla. The deals on the Kona were amazing but boot was just too small for the family.

What is the servicing schedule?

Why has it not caught fire yet ,I've just bought 2020 M3 SR+ when can I expect it to catch fire................. all tongue in cheek loving my M3 for £18,000.
Is it worth having the long range or have you found the standard range is perfect? Would love to do more European road trips!
It’s fine for me as it is. Just plug in everytime you stop for the loo.
Looks like a very nice car
👍👍
What was the real life range from a 100% charge? (Assuming standard conditions/weather)
Well I-ve never done 100%-0% , probably never had it under 20% in fairness but I'd say 210-230 on the Motorway is realistic as long as you're not doing 80 all the way. Keeping it under oir at the speed limit makes a huge difference.
I agree about wipers. My 2008 VW Camper has a better system!
No doubt 👍
Do you find the Interior paneling rattles? Might need to book a call on mine .
No, the passenger seat belt rattles against the seat a bit though when nobody is using it
my headliner trim rattles like crazy and it does my head in!
UK I've got one of the one's with the long range battery that's locked to 260miles from what i can work out. Still LFP chemistry cause tesla want me to fully charge the battery once per week to calibrate the mileage and the battery.
👌
So if you have an issue with a Tesla do they come to you rather than having to take it to a dealer?
They come to you for most of it, I think it only needs to go in somewhere for more serious issues.
Good review. I’m still torn between EV and ICE but videos like this make me sway towards an electric vehicle.
Thanks for watching!
if you can charge at home it's a no-brainer, if not then it depends what routes you drive, my favourite feature is that the car is getting better and better over time with updates, roughly about every 6-8 weeks
I would recommend testing one. Most tesla centres allow a 48 hr test drive. See how you feel.
Do you have to charge it to 100% once a week?
I think they suggest that you do but we sort of naturally do anyway.
I have a Kia and I use the Tesla network. However it is not the FULL Tesla network. You can only use about 10% of the network.
It’s quite a bit more now I think?
Well it saves me about £100 per month in fuel costs at the moment so I would hope so but who knows what that stuffed shirt in no 10 has up his sleeve
Quids in
Great review as always. Not a car for me though, well down the list but each to their own.
Fair enough!
👌
How did we ever see where we are going before auto wipers . Oh yeah we just turned are wipers on some of these automated systems are absolute pointless
😂 I think auto wipers are great generally
is the £10 connectivity charge for all Tesla models and can you not just use the data from your phone?
You can Bluetooth audio from your phone but that’s about it I believe
You can hotspot your phone to avoid this but there are some features only available with PC
Just noticed how much the DS4 has reduced. What do you think of this car?
Watch my review of it 👍
Impossible to have these cars as the insurance is disgusting picked up a brand new Model Y Performance from Manchester Septmember 2023, swapped over our last policy to the MY no more premium needed 4 months later renewal came through £4800 ?!?!??!?!?!
Just insure elsewhere. Remember that car will see off a Lambo.
The fact that you hardly use the Tesla supercharger is why Tesla have to open to all.
My fault is it 😂
@DefinitelyNotAGuru maybe a tiny bit 😅. Tesla obviously decided that they had enough spare capacity to share the love.
Would you still go for rear wheel drive if bought again? Or would you go AWD?
I’m happy with the RWD
AWD is just a joy to ride, my wife is actually enjoying it more than me :D she was gentle with our Outback but now she likes to press the pedal :D

Great timing Jim! Tesla has got a brilliant deal on the MY-RWD so is really tempting me before the Juniper refresh next year comes.
