I think the reason Ukraine is being open about this capability is because it makes it extremely hard for commercial shipping in/out of Russian in the Black Sea area to now get insurance. This could significantly complicate Russia's ability to move its oil and grain via the Black Sea and will deter countries supporting Russia from transiting into the area. Russia is already exporting oil from other ports/regions at max capacity, so probably not much slack available in the system to compensate for whatever is being transshipped through the BS. Very smart and very strategic on Ukraine's part.

There's no need to go to the extra time, effort and expense to make an even more complicated system than what they have. The cheapest, simplest and quickest to manufacture weapon system, that is sufficiently successful, is the best. The great promise of these surface drones is that they get through and they hit target boats. They don't have to sink any of them. They just have to do enough damage to put that ship out of action for expensive and time consuming repairs. This scares the enemy enough to pull those vessels back to the safety of home ports, for fear of attack, taking them out of the fight. The best weapon is the one you don't have to use.

I'm surprised anyone in the 21st century still thinks that war leads to a flourishing of technologies when we have lived through the space race, integrated circuits, and cell phones.
Also, not all swords can be beaten into plowshares. Cluster bombs and nuclear weapons don't have a lot of other uses than killing people.
And finally, a point which should be obvious, war is fundamentally _destructive._ We have lost so many brilliant minds, research hours, and resources to wars. It's actually a much easier (although still fallacious) claim to say we'd be 500 years more advanced if we had not been held back by war.

I think the reason Ukraine is being open about this capability is because it makes it extremely hard for commercial shipping in/out of Russian in the Black Sea area to now get insurance. This could significantly complicate Russia's ability to move its oil and grain via the Black Sea and will deter countries supporting Russia from transiting into the area. Russia is already exporting oil from other ports/regions at max capacity, so probably not much slack available in the system to compensate for whatever is being transshipped through the BS. Very smart and very strategic on Ukraine's part.

The bridge was targeted and damaged at least twice before. They just send in their construction guys and in 2 or 3 days it's good as new and reopened.... Temporarily damaging the bridge isn't A substitution for a successful counter offensive.
Even direct hits with HIMARS didn't damage the bridge irreparably...
