- The two most flogged narratives used to besmirch Hindus are caste and Sati. Abhijit Chavda joins Sanjay Dixit to debun the narrative built around Sati as an integral feature of Hinduism, and also deconstructs Raja Rammohan Roy as a collaborator of the British in helping build that narrative. Feel like an infant in a nursery school after listening to this episode. Also shocked to learn about crypto Christian Ram Mohan Roy. Had read 30/40 years back in an article that Ram Mohan Roy also had concubines besides having a wife. He used to take them along whenever he travelled to that country. Then I had refused to believe this, but today I am convinced that he was thug in saintly garb.

You have picked all of this off the internet, which is probably interpreted by liars and apologists like Chavda now and Dayanand Saraswati in the past. Most Hindus did not practice sati, because most of them never identified with Hinduism as they do today.
And why would anyone want to voluntarily immolate themselves? Try sticking your finger in a candle flame to feel the pain! Only if you are forced, or the other option of living as a widow is made so unbearable by the people around you would you voluntarily burn yourself.

Also ARYA SAMAJ in Northern Parts of Bharat where they reconverted thousands back to Sanatan Dharma who were forcefully converted during Kilafat Hindu Genocide
Sri Ramakrishna might have been a good influential saint , after all he was Guru of Vivekananda, but his episodes of publicised conversion (to assume the incarnation of Christ 😊 and then even becoming Prophet Mohammed for a few months). That made him a laughing stock. As Mohammed, he even went to real extremes like tearing off pictures of Krishna, Vishnu, Shiva etc. Somehow, his disciples saved the idol of Goddess Kali from Ramakrishna (in the mental makeup of Mohammed).
What he proved with these experiments, only he would have known. But these did belittle him.

He made a point there, atleast that's what I think. 😉 Also he really didn't tore those pictures or vandalised the temple. In stead a Krishna idol of Dakshineshwar temple was found broken and he advised them to not get rid of it through visharjan rather repair it and keep worshiping it.

Dayanand Saraswati was totally taught in Sanskrit unlike Ramamohan . He had scholarly work on the Vedas which was highly praised by Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo .
But then again Ishwar ch Vidyasaagar was a sanskrit scholar and yet he supported Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Vidyasaagar was the one who debated with brahmins that widow marriage existed in vedic and Ramayana times and won.

The British government said that the Bengal famine was caused by hoarding of foodgrains by Marwari businessmen in Calcutta. Famine did not happen in any other state in India at that time. UP, MP, Punjab, Rajputana, Sindh, NWFP, Balochistan, Kashmir, Madras, Hyderabad, Assam, all states did not get famine. Only Bengal did.

After being outraged at her father insulting her husband, she took a yogic pose, controlled all her senses and caused a divine fire that consumed her. That's completely different from this practice that was ostensibly named after her

Your knowledge is partially correct! Raja Ram mohon Roy was truely a social reformist !! Some intellectuals may try to turnish his name by making fake logic but it will not stand ! His struggle was against some anti women forces who encouraged some dangerous customs and praised poor conditions of women existing that time in society in the name of Hinduism!!! We must acknowledge that Our society was full of bad , useless and harmful customs backed by some powerful groups of society!! If we want to reform our society ,we must acknowledge our faults too!!Raja Ram Mohon Roy simply did the same!! Some bad customs still exist!! Find out those before criticising a noble, kind hearted man whose contribution for our society is unquestionable!!!

My aunt was married into a Brahmo Samaj family which owned a school and I completed my secondary education from there. We had daily and monthly prayer sessions with bhajans which had no mention of any Hindu gods or goddesses. Raja Rammohan Roy is almost worshipped in west bengal. He is portrayed as the saviour of women along with lord Bentinck. In our history books a gang of youngsters like him at that time is called Young Bengal and Henry louis vivian derozio was their leader. When I had read about sati pratha in my ICSE board in 8th standard I always wondered that how come it was possible it has to be fabricated because no son or daughter of the widow will allow their mother to commit sati or even she had no children she could easily live in any ashram if her relatives don't want her and secondly Britishers were protraid as heroes who stopped a evil practice which was highly doubtful .

Raja Ram Mohan Roy has opposed few practices in Hinduism, so saying that he tried to wipe out Hinduism is wrong. He did criticised Islam, Christianity and missionary activities, so his philosophy was against wrong practices in religion. Hence we can not say he was totally opposed to Hinduism. As per our history he was not first person to oppose idol worship, it started from Buddha whose basic idea was opposition to idol worship and Buddha born as Hindu prince. Later on many saints and philosophers opposed idol worship like Kabir, Guru Nanak.

In Hindu society immovable wealth use to stay with boys(eg land) and movable (gold etc) use to be streedhana of daughters ( always inherited from mother to daughter). Additionally land was non tradable , land could only be inherited (from father to son).
British brought the law that allowed purchase and sell of land (to buy small kingdoms) and only male child can inherit wealth ( land and gold) ( with purpose to take over monarchy that doesn’t have male hair).
The byproduct of these laws was that girl child became irrelevant in society and seen only as a child bearing machine. With so much power at men’s disposal, the dowry tradition was borrowed from British society to marry off daughters to wealthiest man in society.
To may surprise when I travel to west I always have to explain Indian traditions and terminology to my western friends but surprisingly not the word dowry. Almost every western family knows this term very well . This is because, dowry is a medieval European concept that Indian society borrowed during colonial period.

In Bengal, where couple were not having children, wife of dead person were forced to undergo Sati under influence of narcotics, so that property of the deceased person can be enjoyed by his other brother and family members. In Rajasthan also there is Sati mandir. Though Ram Mohan's mother was not forced to go for Sati but his sister in law who was without any child were forced to undergo for Sati. After this incident Ram Mohan Roy started his cruced against Sati and after lot of presentations to then British Government, ultimately Sati was forbidden by Law. Another similar cruced was done by Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar for marriage of widows.
Her sister-in-law must be going to inherit some property of her husband that's why British n some corrupt influential people would have conspired against her n murdered her through so called sati .. otherwise how Uttara the wife of Abhimanyu in Mahabharat n wife of Bali in Ramayana was stopped from committing sati by Lord Krishna n Lord Ram respectively???
