Guys, love the littler tips and tricks. My 79 is 2.0 litre/ manual, but a restoration on any VW bus is always worth watching, especially since you guys are doing it without a mechanical workshop and hundreds of brand name tools. Very encouraging. Keep the videos coming

Nice job guys. I've been watching the videos and have been impressed. I don't have an automatic trans in mine but good luck!

while you had the engine out, you could install some sound proof and fire proof panels...

Simple things first, does it have the proper ATF level?
If it has one are trans Cooler lines attached and not leaking?
The kick down might actually be a Throttle Valve instead of a simple kickdown. on some transmissions, the TV cable or rod adjusts and establishes line pressure inside the trans.
being a hydraulic pump in essence correct pressure is critical for band engagment/clutch operation.
These have a seal between trans and differential sections which keeps ATF out of the DIFF section. if ATF level is low, but no leaks are visible, this seal might have gone bad. this means loss of atf, and contamination of the diff.

+tiporari Thanks for the response. We have gone through a few of those things but there might be a leak between the diff and the trans portion. We have the correct fluid level but when we run the transmission the fluid doesn't heat up at all. Is it supposed to heat up rather quickly or does it take a very long time?

+pandaManda22 With no load it could take a bit longer, but I bet the pump is bypassing somewhere in the valve body. If it doesn't clunk when you put it in gear your line pressure is too low to engage the clutches and it's just staying in neutral. It probably needs to be Flushed and cleaned. pull the valve body, look for corrosion or evidence of water ingress. Clean passages, look for perished o-rings and seals on the solenoids/servos etc. They aren't hard to rebuild/refresh if you take your time, get a good service manual and take your time.

+tiporari If the valve body seems ok, and the clutches are trying to engage but you have no go, then the clutches/bands may be worn out.
I would start with hooking up the linkage for the kickdown, or at least moving it manually while in gear and see if it makes a difference. if it is a TV cable and not JUST a kick down, it regulates pressure in the trans. this means as you advance the throttle and the TV arm is moved it increases pressure, making shifts harder and later. If there's no tension on the arm because the linkages are off, then the line pressure may be so low as not to shift/engage at all.

I know this is an older comment but I'm dealing with same issues as well! Previous owner didn't even have a kickdown rod on my bus! I couldn't understand why it wouldn't go into drive until I really looked at what wasn't on the bus. Thankfully I found a kickdown rod and had to work some things out to fit it on the carb - so I should know if it worked or not in a few months when the weather gets nicer but I like your advice - thank you

We bought the bus in this condition. We would never cover a bus in body filler.

+Rod Amo We have a new bus now. This one has too much rust to be worth the time and money to restore. It has mostly become a parts bus. Check out the latest Episode of the 1973 Bus. Thanks :)
