Out riding earlier today and was wondering about the physics on cornering with regards to the tyre. Was looking for a physicist’s opinion on it all but here we are. Fantastic stuff. Really informative.

Depth of the tyre is a % of the width...
    So, R17- 200-50 means; 17 inch tyre - 200mm width and 100mm (50% of 200mm) depth.

BB... it is not correct to say (when given the size 190/55) that the 55 is the depth of the tire--not so. That number is called the aspect-ratio. The 55 means, that 55% of the 190 is the depth of the tire. So, 190mm across, but 55% of that, is the depth=104.5mm. You could say there's more clarity in a number showing how close to the ground the rim rolls over it, but that would ignore how wide it is, and wider ones give better cornering than a narrower tire of the same depth. However, by using a singular number (aspect ratio) you can account for both depth and width in one measure. This gives a clearer picture about performance rather than simply "depth."

Great video. I have a 19' CBX and had a bad experience with the Shinko 705's. Gonna try out the Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires.

I thought the depth measurement was a percentage of the width? Not mm?

5:00 and the bike manufacturers are fully aware of these improvements in tires as well as everything else you state, so why they still recommend 36/42??
But you do have some good points.

Dear Adam regarding tyre size. In some offroad bikes front tyre size are 2.75-21 and rear are 4.10-18. What does 2.75 and 4.10 mean? 21 and 18 are rim size ok

I ride a cb650 bought new in July 2017 fitted with Dunlop Sportsmax D222 tyres. I have read lots of reviews of these tyres and have yet to read a good one, and after a couple of twitches i am looking to buy something different. After seeing this vid I checked my tyre numbers and was amazed to see made in Thailand in 2012, so the tyres were 5 years old before they even hit the road. Having read elsewhere that tyre manufacturers recomend changing tyres after 5 years regardless does anyone else think I could have a claim against Honda for fitting 5 year old dodgy tyres on a brand new bike.

What should we do when the tyre wears partially, what should be the tyre pressure? As per recommended or lower it as per feel?

I was hoping for a little extra info in terms of types of riding vs different types of tyres etc.
I'm not a mega fast rider, but my bike is a fast bike (a Ducati 959) and I only ride on normal roads. So I'm always struggling to decide exactly what type of tyre I should really be running with. I am occasionally in the rain, but not so much anymore, so I went with Michelin Power RS tyres... but should I have just went with more durable or multiweather orientated tyres??

too much of it yes, too little will be noticeable on high speeds by vibration and could get dangerously unstable.

1:23 I dunno man, I'm pretty sure I've learned from pros and all the research I've done and tiheard re manufacturers that the grooves not only disperse water but ALSO allow for more tire rubber to flex and expand generating more and creating rubber heat for optimal traction and performance AND that the grooves edges even act as little teeth biting into the road for a little more grip.

    • @themotorcycleguy5980

Then why do people go with soft slicks on track when it's not raining but will throw even softer tires with grooves in them if it start raining?
