Classic circuit, in some educational institutions for electronics you get asked to build the 'Knight Rider' (Larson Scanner) from these two chips and then your asked to do it again in software ! so Hardware test and Software test !.....cheers.

    Great circuit..
Actually I had made this during lockdown....
    Love your all videos..
Please make a video on 74HC595 8bit shift resistor ic... ❤️❤️❤️

I was thinking a resistor array might come in handy. I put together a kit a couple years ago that has everything on the pcb. The downside is not being able to change the led color. They’re all red on mine.

Yeah, resistor array would probably be perfect. Good thinking. I don't think I'll buy any of the kits I seen. They don't look like they are easy to modify. So far, I'd rather design it and make it myself on a double sided PCB board.

That’s a good idea. You could get one of the pcb companies to sponsor you. All the electronics channels are doing it.

I am using a potentiometer to control and slow down the speed of the 555 and the LM4017 outputs. I'm wanting the LED's to fade when they come on and off and I am experienced with many different circuits that fade LED's. I have tried basic cap and resistor pairings at the LED's and also by using the 4017 outputs to drive bc547's transistors that turn on the LED's, again with different arrangements of caps and resistors on the base and/or emitter sides and I've also tried resistor/cap arrangements that can turn square waves triangle or sine, with and without the transistors. In all cases, I can get a very controllable fade out of the LED's but cannot get them to fade on. Is there something about the output of an LM4017 that will not allow it's waveform to change or for a capacitor to slowly charge? Or something else that I just can't figure out?

Do you have a po box? I had jlcpcb make me some breadboad friendly 5 smd led boards and i can send you a couple. Keeps the breadboard clean (resistor and led are on the board, both smd)

No I don't, but thanks for the offer! This might be the first reason I special order PCBs. I am not finding anything close to what I want so far.

@@Electronzap no worries, if you use jlcpcb and panelize them you will end up with more than you will ever use so they are good to share with people, i think i got like 400 for $8-10. Since you have to pay extra to panelize you get to pick whatever color you want too
