- Today I'm driving that rarest of things... a Jaguar with a manual! A 1995 XJR (also known as the XJR6) which has been lovingly converted to manual by its owner, Lee.

The best line for me, "You have to plan ahead, and you have to know what you're doing, -pause- takes a breath, it's what we used to call driving". Salute to all the drivers out there!!!
So pleased the car's appearance hasn't been messed with. A very desirable motor and a great review.
It has x308 headlights on it :) a common mod and i am doing it soon to mine
"It's always a good day when I can drive a Jag..". That's why I bought myself a Jag...Now every day is a good day for me....
Old Jag = thumbs up.
As an owner of a XJR6 (albeit an automatic) myself I just want to say you did a great job understanding and explaining what makes these cars so special. They have a unique charm all of their own. Basically when you drive one, you either get it or you don't. This converted car is a real credit to it's owner, especially having a usable clutch. Many old X300s/XJ40/XJS with this gearbox suffer from catastrophically heavy clutches for one reason or another, mainly due to age. I drove a factory manual XJR6 last year and the clutch was so heavy it hurt to use it! Also the exhaust on this car is perfect. It has just the right amount of 1960s Mk. 2 Jag bank robbery getaway car to it without being too loud.
Ah, I can explain the clutch. There is apparently a heavy duty return spring on them normally which this one does not have
JayEmm on Cars Yes, that is an interesting point of note for us keen on the idea of having our own cars converted.
A perhaps slightly interesting addendum to my earlier post. I now own another converted manual XJR6 (also I got a test drive of the car in this video just after it was released). I'm absolutely delighted to have the manual over the auto, it is so much more engaging to drive. It certainly takes some time to build a a rapport with the car, but every time you drive it it feels special.
non stop high quality content at the moment...keep it up...
I love these reviews. I prefer this type of content personally than high end. As a budget petrol head I respect anyone who drives this sort of thing
I was dozing off watching the RS6 vid; this is much more interesting. Audi's have no soul, this car oozes the stuff!
Tis funny for me usually the 'better' the car is the less interesting they are. Give me flawed beauties over perfection every time
@@ferociousmullet9287 Was going to say I've had 4 XJs. Love them to bits. Will not bother with it again. Had a glorious XJR (8) that cost as much to run over two years as it cost to buy.
@@ferociousmullet9287I have to agree; car's with 'character' are more interesting to watch
@@fettlemaster Let me have my rose-tinted specs on this one...............
That's just because it's old lol
This is legitimately the car I want most in the world.
The main limitation with these XJRs is the brakes and the Supercharger. Getting an uprated one, a twin corkscrew, will increase the top end whilst leaving the torque at the low end in good stead.
Well Jay, you’ve inspired me. Five years ago I sold mine, one of very few in the US with a manual, and as of a couple of weeks ago it’s back in my possession. Time to live the manual XJR6 life again.
It's a very special feeling when driving a Jag. I have an X300 XJ6 and a BMW E61 and both make me feel good when driving but the Jag is the best feeling. Perhaps it's the low wide planted feel of the car when cornering or the fact that it accelerates well but the faster you go the harder it accelerates. Having said that it still feels great when stuck behind slow moving traffic. Then I simply enjoy the comfort.
An absolutely gem of a car. A real credit to the owner. I wonder if the slow steering can be improved.
PS Love the jaguar shirt.
Can probably swap it out for a later X308 rack.
You are dressed like a Spanish gypsy, great review and a nice motor, great to see your subs climbing. You do a fantastic job reviewing cars
Cheers!
This man’s shirt game is 10/10 as always. I guess this is the only thing you can wear when you pull up in the jaaaaag.
The comment on its double personality is so true! I have an X308 XJR, it's a rocket ship on a highway and comfortable cruiser all in one package.
I used to own a 4.2 short wheelbase series 1 in 1976 and absolutely loved the car. There wasn't anything I didn't like about it. I've not had the chance to drive anything more recent. Maybe one day...
Well Jay, I wouldn't call the GM 4L80E trans junk. Yes, it is not as fun as a manual trans. However, the 4L80E is a robust beast, very tough. I love me manual trans, which is why my sports car has one. And my XJR 100 has an auto. Wouldn't have it any other way.
A 4L80E is near indestructible. The successor of the mighty TH-400
Great vid on a great car. This is when cars were properly engineered with quality parts with no computers attempting to mask design/engineering/assembly shortcuts.
Love these quirky older cars, and this one seems wonderful.
I'm biased, however, as I have a modified 1988 manufactured SAAB 900 Turbo-16. Have had several other cars, and driven many more, but I have always kept this one. Amazing 'standard' equipment for its time, in fact still true compared with plenty of cars today. A joy to drive, I won't get rid of it until one of us dies. Given the reliability of the engine (393,000km/244,000 miles at time of writing and still purring) I'm not sure that won't be me, LOL.
p.s. another cracking shirt there, James.
As a Jaguar lover, this one is the holy grail: the ultimate incarnation of the Jaguar straight six in the most timeless of all bodies.
Years ago our garage had a mint one for sale for 10.000€. If only we had got it...
I'm convinced these cars will ultimately end up as highly desirable for any serious classic collector. Still a bargain I reckon.
@@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne
So do I. If only I was able to find a good one, though...
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X I know someone with the exact same spec xjr but with the auto for 7k(mint and only 74k orso on the clock) car is in the Netherlands tho
That is a Proper Jaaaaaaaaaggg!!
I can only imagine it is primarily used for ‘borrowing’ paintings from stately homes in the middle of the night
You say getaway spec Jag & I immediately think of the 60's spec S-type and the intro to the Sweeney. This is the spiritual successor, pukka motor when blagging the local bank :-)
Believe it or not, I have one of these cars. I bought it in 1997 and when I first test drove it, I could not believe it was a Jaguar. If you had blind folded me on an aircraft runway and gone for a hurl then the last car I would have guessed it was, would have been a Jaguar. Awesome.
That's my kind of motor. Nicely low-key to look at but with a suprising character and above all, manual! I'd love that car.
The original 4 door coupe. What a stunner
You just keep making me want more cars...... this is like when I started play grand turismo. Come on lottery.
Ahh Jay you have done it again, brilliant video. These are exceptional vehicles, reliable, well built, smooth. They ooze character and presence.
That's very rare!
A nice combination of XJR manual supercharged straight-six!
well,my sister got one from 1997.. its from 1995 ,120000km...left side drive, second owner .we newer see on market like this(manual)how much is worth ,looks like he is rare?
Your continue to amaze with the amount of cars and variety on this channel, great work.
Nice to see the jaguar content. Hopefully you get given to drive the 2010 XJ supersport or a Jaguar XE SV Project 8. Great review of the luxurious XJR manual rare breed and great video and keep up the great work
Nice, honest, informative and entertaining.. what more can we ask in a Jag review.. Well done!!
It`s quite amazing how many young people stop to talk to you and admire X300`s . Mine is a LWb Sovereign and 1 of 33 ordered with twin rear electric seats . it`s been my everyday car for 9 years .
Mark C nice, I had one of those too. Very cool car. Mine was a factory test mule for the 4 seater setup.
lovely!
I'm loving your videos. You are like a used car gems king. Digging out those sweet budget cars to look out for
Wow, nicest xj I've seen, those wheels and that red pinstriping, lovely stuff.
Used to have the supercharged 4.0, fantastic car for soaking up the miles, thirsty as hell and the back end on those long cars needs to be respected, once they swing out it goes fast.
yep my dad had one best car he ever had. Spun it on a roundabout in the wet
Yea I have one and the first time I drove it properly I almost broke my neck lol.. thus me nicknaming it Whiplash
Great video and assessment.
I have a x308 XJR and you made me fall in love with it even more!
dream car
you just dropping monster quality and amazing vids
keep it up
Cheers Ryan, I am just getting lucky with the cars coming my way!
Watching this is almost as good as driving that lovely Jag. Great work.
Wow! These were my favourite cars growing up…always lusted after the V12 Vanden Plas
But this! Amazing 🤠👍
That sounds great! Love the fact it’s a manual 👍👍
The sound of a supercharger makes a world of difference.
I love that old Jag
I have an xj8 3.2 v8 which I absolutely love to bits but I really want an xjr6 like this one. The manual box would be too much fun, love the videos Jay, you described the charm of the old jags perfectly here. Liked and subscribed!
And I thought I'm a fanboy with 3 Jags;) I'm in love with that manifold btw.
Ive just sold mine, the 5 speed really suits the character. shame more people didn't order one.
Had one! British Racing Green Cream leather black wood. So miss that car bought it at 20k miles to took it to 80k miles. It just handled, so comfy and a real Q car. But then again saw these Supercharged 6 engines in the factory peaking power on the dynos, ever seen a dyno boil?....the LSD was essential too!
Great insight as usual thanks
Awesome car. Keep up the good work.
Used to feel a bit uneasy about these, but they look & drive with so much character 👍
The gangster car of choice! Love it
Wow, i never knew they even did a manual. Great video!
Owned one of these for 6 years. Fantastic car.
If you can find one that hasn't twisted itself into a ball a Lister XJS would be phenomenal channel material.
God that's just phenomenal!
Much better J love this, so much more interesting than cars with screens and Tec with price tags out of reach. Where did you get that type R shirt from bud? More please
lovely vid from one of my favourite cars
Top Vid and top car, Love the Proper shape jaguars, Keep up the excellent content
Cheers Scoob
Dream car! Cracking video.
It is a cool machine and you did a great explaining why 👍
Brilliant car!
Very good narrative jay.
I had a manual XJ40 back in the day. That was a great drive.
Came for the lovely lovely Jaaaaaag content. I wasn't disappointed.
I loves me a Jaaaaag
Great review, I've always had fondness for these and they're a lot cheaper than an XJC or Daimler Coupe from the 7ts which I've always wanted to own. Excellent upgrades by the owner btw, wonderful stuff!
Good vid with an outrageous shirt, nice work fella
Great cars if you find one ,getting very scarce now ,I searched for 3 years here in Ireland and found one with 60000 miles fsh a 95 car without all the bells and whistles but Jesus what a weapon it loves petrol and tyres and I love it ,the last of the straight six twin cam with a SuperCharger wheeeeeeeee ,it’s also rust free and suuuperbly comfortably a real jaaaag
I love the one windshield wiper
I really like these Jag's. They look understated but they also look meaty. I'm still saving up for an early XKR.
@Hector Yea I picked a silver one up in September last year. It's great.
My absolute favorite Jaguar sedan first generation XJ6-R.
The GM auto transmission is actually good.
That sir is an outstanding shirt! Great video, I have a XJ 308 V8, love it.
Now *that's* a car worth learning to drive on the wrong side of the road for...
I love this
Great vid, thanks for this
Fantastic lovely carv
I have always loved the shape of the x300 beautiful design aged very well .Cool car in a manual but I have to say I always liked the slightly lazy big auto box in the jag, great video keep them coming
I had one of these few years ago and was out on the m55. It was dark and nobody else about so I thought I’d have a play. I hit 130 in no time. I took a quick glance at the digital read out on the dash and the inst fuel consumption said one (1) . 😂😂😂😂😂😂. Good girl.
What a fantastic sum up of the xjr6.manual.
i bought one in 1998, and still have it, im the second owner and its done over 180k, its made to be driven
Never in a million years would I think one of these would come in a manual
Great content
Great job on this video, I have 2 Jags, both XjR's 1998-2000
Nice video thanks for making it
Awesome car, awesome shirt.
If you enjoyed that, i think you should drive my 1997 Saab 9000 Aero 2.3T manual. The car that was advertised as being quicker than a Diablo (midrange). Mine will actually keep with an Audi R8 V10 to 100. Its very amusing shall we say. 70 to 100 is just 3.5 seconds in 3rd. Happy to bring it to you. Mine was in a private collection for 14yrs, so its in remarkable condition.
It's funny you should mention that, at one point I owned both that era Saab 9000 Aero (mine was a 1995 and mildly tuned) as well as a 1995 manual XJR. Both very different kinds of fun; the Jag had an immensely flat torque curve from low revs all the way through 4k RPM, in stark contrast to the Saab's need to get above 2500 RPM before the beast showed its true colors. The Saab's rally car noises were definitely hilarious fun, especially with my open intake and turbo-back exhaust, and quite the change from that straight six and supercharger harmony one got from the Jag.
@@ofmanynicknames I love it. Ive had 3 9000 Aero's now, and out of all the cars ive had its the best all rounder. Im getting 40.5mpg at the moment on runs into London and back. And yet it will leave an A45 for dead on the dash to 100. Also THE best seats of any car in the world, ever. The only Seat also that Saab contracted out and didnt make inhouse. So they are made by Recaro.
@@dj_paultuk7052 Speaking of it being an incredible all-rounder car, what's the biggest thing you've crammed into the hatch with the seats folded down? I moved house with mine and transported everything I owned in or on it; I needed the roof rack for my mattress, but everything else fit, including a 6-foot tall book case.
@@ofmanynicknames Well not in a 9000CS. But in an early flat front 9000 i got a full double divan bed in the rear with mattress and closed the hatch !. Dont think you could manage that in a CS given the rear speaker pods are just a bit bigger.
Very nice jaaaag :)
I really want one,
That manual really wakes it up and we have a ton of these old jags in Australia with low KMs in good condition and relatively cheap but none with a manual I don't think a single one made it to Australia
They are very expensive in Australia
Would love a an Arden XJ6. Great video James
Came for the shirt. Was not disappointed!
Love that car. I have a 99 XJR here in the states and I would put a 5 or 6 speed manual in it if I knew all the correct parts to get. That would make it so much more fun to drive.
Bloody love the x300. Always listed after a double six. Totally nuts but that’s the appeal. Lambswool, picnic tables. Mega.
Smart buy.
Purrrrfect
These are cheap as chips these days. Beautiful car and spec for the money
@John Mitchell that's also true!
@John Mitchell This is why you every day something like a cheap toyota. Keep it special.
@John Mitchell I know, I know......b-but!! Let me keep this dream...I know the reality is different....
@John Mitchell I'm 21 and I love these Jags, didn't know if there any good though as a daily car.
Jay you loved this car, you should get one 👍
Nice vid Chubbs
Cool car
I always wondered what the manual version was like(on the first edition, the six cylinder engine one). I wish they had it as an option on V8 one. It’s a great car.
Love the manual XJ ...
Tiff once drove a XKR-R special done by factory (in-house) engineers just to see what they could do - sadly never available to the public as far as I'm aware.
At one of my old jobs we had a guy come in with one of these with a factory manual gearbox, in black. It was such a mean looking car, but it had advanced bulkhead rot that meant the shell wasn't savable. Such a shame, hopefully the parts live on in another car.
I bemoan being in Australia. I want a Jag so badly. They aren't cheap here.
I ticked a box on my goal list by owning a Jaguar (XJ6 Sport 4.0 manual) over a decade ago. Really nice car in a reddish colour. Cream leather upholstery. Now I am driving a Maxda 6 which I had as a wallpaper image on my PC way back, to set as a goal. Hmm.
I wanted an 80's xj6 series 3 in racing green ever since I seen the tv show The Equalizer back in the 80's
