  • A wonderful day lugging stuff around on my Monopole Cargo bike.
    Stopping off at Hitch to pick up my Probably Riding hats, then at Calico to check out the sample of the Probably riding shirt. Should be for sale in the next month or so. Keep an eye out for info.

      @@probablyriding I second that first comment wholeheartedly 🚲☕🏞❤🙏 I discovered your videos/channel by chance with the Tokyo Toilet Tour (A man of my heart) and stayed for the calm and inspiring videos. They've really helped my roommate's and my mental health and inspired them to buy a bicycle and start riding and inspired me to try to ride more than just commuting and to have a few too many late night decaf coffees ☕🙏 I also finally got around to watching Perfect Days after wanting to since hearing about it when it came out. Infinite and eternal Thanks, I'm sure you're inspiring and bringing peace to so many out there 💛🙏 Also, congratulations on the wee one(s) 👶💚🙏 If you're ever in Canada (Ottawa) or I'm ever in Seoul I would love to have some coffees, join the clean bowl club, and probably ride our bikes 🚲🙏

    Glad to see the cameo of the OG cargo bikes. My oldest bike memories in Korea are of one guys carrying a squealing piglet and another carrying sheet glass, all with multiple reinforcing members. I occasionally see some homebrew cargo bikes out here in the country. The need is there, and your Monopole is really a cool solution.

    For two kids a long tail cargo bike with a low rear wheel is great. It gets the centre of mass lower and the longer deck can hold a combination of cushion or Yepp kids seats (Yepp are excellent - all of ours kids loved our seat). Put the Yepp at the back and a set of those mini bars on the seat post.
    Lots of the long deck bikes can be fitted with a frame to help protect kids and foot plates that also double as extra support for the panniers. Make sure you get the panniers - kids seem to require all sorts of extra stuff!!
    Oh and lovely news, very happy for you both!

    Ive been riding an electric harry vs larry bullitt the past couple years and I love it! Use it to lug my work tools to the various locations I work around chicago. As well as running errands or bringing friends in the front to the next pub. I see a lot of urban arrows around Chicago with multiple kids in the front! Seems to be a great option but it does seem large.

    I love the OG cargo bikes! TheSangju Bicycle museum has a few. I especially love the creative variety of front fork "reinforcements" (don't know how much strength it adds). It's interesting how the same modifications are made across bicycles and motorbikes: the rear is lengthened either by extending the swinging arm or by bending the exposed seatpost forwards; also, the ladder-like vertical rack behind the rider to accommodate tall goods.

    • @probablyriding
      @probablyriding  4 дні тому

    After hunting for ages I finally found an old Xtracycle kit last year and used it to turn my '90s GT Avalanche into a long tail cargo bike. I love it! There is indeed a weird pleasure in moving heavy things, by bike. I really feel the comments around 6:50. I've thought about it a lot, trying to figure out where this joy comes from compared to the stress of moving anything in a car... I think it's partly because you operate with no time expectancy anymore. You get to enjoy the process, the journey.
    Have you tried moving using mostly the bike? It's a next level challenge, but mostly doable except for the heaviest pieces (looking at you, solid oak table....)
    A local roaster has started stocking up coffee shipped by sail, so I'm looking forward to biking it across Denmark to some colleagues, and preserving the low carbon impact nature of the coffee. Of course I'll be doing it on my Omnium Mini :D

    When my children were younger, I used - at different times - a rear child-seat, and later, a seat bolted to the crossbar with foot-rests on the downtube.
    For utilitarian reasons, I now ride an Elephant-Bike (ex post-office Pashley Pronto/Mailstar) for shopping and general errands. You could easily seat two children on the rear-rack with an appropriate double seat.

      @probablyriding I used one of those single-wheel tag-along trailers for about a year to take my daughter to school and back. It effectively turns your bike into tandem, but I found it really disconcerting how the whole thing clunked from side to side on bends and corners, so I sold it and encouraged her to ride her own bike instead - under supervision of course.

  • @alexanderasdf2742
    @alexanderasdf2742 6 днів тому +2

    I used a Harry vs Bullit for a week with my daughter. She loved it but I found it was a bit cumbersome. Also because bike infrastructure is not at all designed for longer bicycles. Tight turns and "Umlaufgitter"(German), which are basically there to hinder cars from entering bicycle paths, are often times hard to navigate. But that's also true if you use a bicycle trailer or anything that's longer than your "standard" bicycle. However, I think long tail bikes look interesting. I expect they feel more like riding a "normal" bicycle. And they seem to be good at lugging kids around ;) Especially older ones (3/4 years plus). For very small children, I think I prefere a bike trailer. It's low to the ground, so they can access it as soon as they can walk. And you can use it together with basically any bicycle. And you can store both separately. A bonus if you have to carry your bike over stairs in order to store it.

    • @probablyriding
      @probablyriding  6 днів тому

      I was thinking a long tail might be better for multiple kids. Good call with the trailer though. My colleague uses one and his daughter loves it.

  • @jeffdible8171
    @jeffdible8171 6 днів тому +1

    I towed kids around in a trailer and grandkids on a long tail. I really think the bakfiet is the best because you have your children in front and can see them. Lots of great brands, but another option is the argo cargo version 2. You have great bikes so you just add a bakfiet box up front to your already awesome bike. If money is no object Riese and Mueller seems to be the cats meow. Good luck if your “friend” needs a cargo bike.

    Our next bike will 100% have some cargo characteristics. The monopole is now on the list.
    Can’t wait for the merch, please post here when it’s available, I don’t have Instagram. 🚲

    I don't ever hear you "dinging" a bell in any of these videos. Do you use bells on any of your bikes? Are they not effective when navigating the shared spaces of Seoul?

    • @probablyriding
      @probablyriding  5 днів тому

      I talk about it in some of my videos. Sometimes I feel people just get even more in the way when I use the bell.

    I don’t get why so many people walk in bike lanes. You’re very patient, I’d be shouting at them!

      I try to accept the ‘cultural difference’. I do say something off camera sometimes. 😇

    Omnium cargo bike, not as nimble as the monopoly, but more capacity.
    I take the big kid in the cargo seat area, I have a Shotgun seat for the little one in front of me, and the baby goes in the hamax on the rear rack

    Your MonoPole. is missing a rear rack!

      I think it’s good without one but they do have an option with rear rack mounts.

    I am sorry, but for a small east asian country South Korea had been pretty hostile towards cyclists and cycling infrastructure. I see cargo bikes in the carbrained US all the time, but only bikes I see in South Korea were either uber expensive aero roadbikes, carbon MTBs, or straight up BSOs from department stores. Hope it changed while I left.

      There’s a growing number of people riding for daily life, not just leisure. Still a way to go.

    For hauling my two kids, living in Singapore (flatter but much hotter than Seoul) i am ordering a Le Petit Porteur Longtail.
    Enough space for 2 kids plus their school kit. From end to end it’s about the same length as my Trek hybrid. And even more importantly it’s a mixte and green!

      Good call but it’s not just the environmental impact. Cities would just be a nicer and safer place to live with fewer cars and more bikes.
