Not every Marvel hero deserves a movie... Disney needs to get there heads out of the clouds and listen to the fans and get a feel for the room and most people don't think that these Heros deserve a movie. You can have them in a Dr Strange movie but not in a stand alone movie.
I really liked the first Captain Marvel movie and this one also. I like Captain America and Iron Man as much as the average fan, but they're well known already. Robert Downey Jr. is a human and experienced actor who can't always be Iron Man
Yeah not all characters have a good enough story to tell that last a movie length
This is why the original X-Men films worked. Some characters work better with an ensemble cast. Giving almost everyone a project especially the less popular ones has lessen the special feel of the movies.
They know that, but they continue to push Disney+ over the Theaters. They just want everyone to subscribe to Disney+, that's why they push these characters. John gets upset with Netflix for hurting Theaters, but here Disney is hurting Theaters even more.
The Marvels is on pace to end its entire worldwide run with less money than No Way Home's domestic opening weekend.
At least Disney is still breaking box office records. That is positive, kind of
@@badger3184 they broke it positively with the first Captain Marvel movie that was sandwiched between Infinity Wars and Endgame and now broke it negatively with The Marvels.
How low Disney Marvel has fallen on the course of four years...
Marvel needs to get rid of it's "Did this just happen" comedy shtick so to speak. And make movies on par with DUNE, Wonder Woman, The Batman, Logan etc.
@@jjstarrprod agreed 👍🏿
Robert NAILED IT!!! I don't think there is any "super hero fatigue ". I just think that post Endgame, NONE of the following shows and movies feel connected like the previous decade felt. This is supposed to be the "multiverse" saga and it has never felt so segregated between shows/movies
And it's also because it is just with uninteresting characters as if the Arrowverse kept on going with spinoffs based on the C list supporting characters like Cecile, Chester & Allegra expecting to be a draw.
So many reasons why this failed:
1. No promotion/interviews because of the strike
2. Bad faith in the marvel brand overall
3. Mostly unkown characters
4. Unpopular main lead who alientated much of the audience
5. Confusing marketing/trailers of the tone
6. "Bland" Superhero fatigue.
People still want engaging superhero movies with great storytelling.
I always feel iffy when someone says movie interviews are that important to convincing people to see a movie.
Like I'd get it if we're in the 80's but feel archaic to think it makes a significant impact (unless the star starts going on an antisemitic rant I guess)
You left out a lot of the movie going audience doesn't like Brie Larson.
If a Kang or Wanda or Doom or Hela, we’re the villains. I think this movie would have done well. These characters are popular because they are fun to watch. Great backstory. The Marvels are boring. Sry.
Barbie had no promotion/interviews going and yet smashed the box office to pieces
7. The word of mouth is also mostly "mixed", it got a B CinemaScore so any chance of it having legs is NULL.
These things happen when you forget who your main audience is
The general audience just doesn’t give a shit about these newer characters
I'm just waiting for the day women start yelling at women to watch things like this or the wnba instead of yelling at men for not watching.
Nobody is yelling at anyone. Take a break from Twitter
Well said sur
I lost it when John said, “C’mon…we used to love this shit!” 😂 So true.
That feels SO long ago.
I usually never miss a Marvel movie but this time around I decided on watching Thanksgiving over The Marvels lol
I'm skeptical that the X men will save the MCU at this point. This is definitely not the universe I want the x men brought into.
Same, im so worrieed. Deadpool, daredevil the xmen and the fantastic four shouldnt be a part of the mcu
Notice how John provides cover for Iger by blaming these failures on on Chapek, a guy who was in charge for 11 months. These movies were greenlighted years ago when Iger was still running the show.
Greenlighting Phase 4 movies and TV was Iger.... HOW the Production management has been handled has largely been Chapek. John has pointed this out numerous times that Chapek stretched Feige thin and on top of it took power from him on what projects would be made so there were several Disney Plus series added after Iger's greenlighting of the early titles for Phase 4
@soulofanerd9364 Chapek did take power from Feige, and rightfully so. He wanted to go to more a distributor based model where the creatives had to prove there was commercial demand for projects before they got greenlit. Iger obviously disagreed, and we see how that has gone. Again, Chapek wasn't a savior, but he barely had 11 months as CEO. Disney is in the state it is in today because of Bob Iger.
@@frankmurphy9374 I've just had the impression the lack of focus on quality control for Marvel has a lot to do with Chapek's pushing Disney plus content demands on Feige. It makes sense to me as a viewer that a bunch of these titles came out of nowhere. Echo, Agatha, Ironheart....even She Hulk and Moon Knight 🤷🏽♂️. I think that has a lot to do with the drop in quality of movies especially since other than Love and Thunder, the other movies aren't terrible, just not as good as Phase 3....in my opinion
@@soulofanerd9364 All those projects that you just listed off were greenlit years before Chapek took power. This content push was an Iger initiative. Also, a big part of the drop in interest from fans is due to Fiege pushing characters and stories that put simply aren't interested in. I think the best bet for Disney is to put Marvel and Star Wars on ice for a few years and come up with completely new gameplans.
@@frankmurphy9374 so John doesn't know what he's talking about? What are the sources you've used for this information?
The Marvels 'inconsequential to anything' ...you said it right there fella.......a piece of totally disposable crap that should never have seen the light of day. It is extremely important that these things lose tens of millions and that they keep on doing so - this is the only outcome that will force change.
That scene in winter soldier when cap breaks down the door chasing bucky and throws the shield is so awesome....oozing testosterone and epicness....now we're stuck with "girls get it done" scenes and movies....like seriously who are you making these for...know your fanbase Marvel
I know... good time it was
i have been a hugeeee Marvel fan. Ive read the comics, watched the marvel movies on openingsday, have been a collector for years. since she-hulk, I threw everything away and havent seen a single show/movie since and never will except Deadpool 3 and the SONY Spiderman movies in the future. The whole mcu storyline is ruined and I still can't believe that there are so many projects coming. Are they not realizing they're DESTROYING and ruining everything. like if people are excited and waiting for ECHO or that show about Agatha darkness. I am soooo confused what they're trying to achieve wthhh
"Give me woman make them diverse and make it gay" - south park
So small case study - of six immediate family members who went to every single marvel outing up until end game. All bar one have completely given up. ( guardians excepted). That’s an 83% audience loss of bums on seats in one family.
“I basically liked it.” - John Campea
The Multiverse has been absolute poop. Marvel fumbled the bag.
Even though most of the projects of phases 4 & 5 haven’t really focused on the multiverse
Agreed.
Like John, I too hate this whole "no consequence we can do anything" line of storytelling. Just absurd they thought this was the direction to go in.
Too convoluted for casuals
Spider-Verse and Everything Everywhere knocked it out of the park with their multiversal stories so well, that anything else in comparison just looks generic.
Just think if this movie loses 300 million, RDJ in Ironman 4 suddenly starts looking affordable
Deadpool won’t make a billion but it will make money maybe 500to 800 but not a billion
To fail this hard is impressive
😝All Messed UP!😒
Well the MCU is still not going nowhere any time soon despite this rare misfire as we have Deadpool 3 next year, echo, captain America bnw, blade, fantastic four, thunderbolts so it's going to take a lot more than these few misfires recently etc.
@@iraford5788nobody here WANTS the mcu to go anywhere, we want the quality back.
@@iraford5788 I'm going to worry.. blade film will never be made, the script is never completed, it's in a mess or development he'll?, I don't think about it too much.🤔 If the company struggling to turn it around, that saves me money.💰=🏦😒
Incel
Problem is they made a movie about characters that most people don't care about. Also Marvel’s fault that they weren't able to make the audience care. A great movie could've changed that.
One thing I've noticed is as a fan who's watched every single piece of Marvel content that has been released, I feel like throughout phase 4 there has been no "reward" for watching all the movies and TV shows. Aside from some small connections and the cameos, none of the content is really relevant to each other or the MCU as a whole and makes me less enthusiastic about watching everything that is released
people are fed up with this nonsense, the show is over
Everytime i hear about the Marvels I just see Eric Cartman as Kathleen Kennedy even though she didn't produce this movie.
It’s missing the cohesion brought by the Russos and Markus/McFeely. Their through line carried the MCU - story and planning is everything.
I keep banging on about this but I’m still of the opinion that The Eternals overall story would have made a better underlying story arc if done properly. Celestials as the big bad.
“I basically liked it” … grow some balls man!!!
Fr man i can’t stand this dude sometimes
@@cardsfan2161 I can’t stand him at all but I wanted to see the mental gymnastics he was going to do to make this POS movie sound good in some way. He didn’t disappoint.
Why can't he like it? More people that watched the movie, came out mote positive about the movie than negative. John isn't the arbiter of what's good and bad about film. You can dislike the movie, and another person can like it.
The Marvels, you have failed this cinematic universe.

Imagine if the movie was, Captain Marvel goes back to the Kree home world and kills the supreme intelligence thinking she was doing something right and the fall out, causes the death of millions. and she has to deal with the moral implications
It is just crazy to think this is where we are with the MCU now.
Campea is trying to get back on Disney's good side
"underwhelming box office" 🤣🤣
As someone who loves football as well as all things nerdy. I love when campea subtly drops his football metaphors when talking about the struggles of marvel 😂😂
Breaking news: Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Lex Luthor in ‘SUPERMAN LEGACY’
John nobody’s gonna come at you. Call a spade a spade, the movie sucked. I like miss marvel, and even captain marvel is compelling at times, but the story/plot was just 💩
He wants to be invited to future events
Good point
Ah right, because in the world of superhero/Star Wars fandom nobody is allowed to have a middle of the road opinion, it has to either be amazing or crap right?
Im just happy we had the infinity saga. Waited my whole life for that. It was a good 11 year run. These movies are no longer aimed at me (lifetime comic fan). I'm out.
It's for the people who want the message in everything 😂😂😂😂😂
Its really so much simpler than everyone is making it. Stop making superhero movies for girls. Call it sexist call it racist... whatever it loses money. Stop doing it.
I just call you bad at math. BLACK WIDOW released in theaters and on home streaming at the same time, during a pandemic, made more than Black Adam. WONDER WOMAN made $822 million. CAPTAIN MARVEL made $1.1 Billion.
Meanwhile, FLASH only made $270 million. Blue Beetle only made $129 million. Shazam 2 only made $133 million. Should they stop making superhero movies for men?
2 of those are D list superheroes that yea, should not have movies. So let's address Flash. $270million... okay so when The marvels reaches $270 you have a point. Shall we wait? How much you wanna bet it never sniffs the nuts of Flash box office?
@@johncampeaJohn, do you honestly think repetitive female lead super hero movies are financially sustainable? Be for real man
To appeal to a mass audience you better have a strong male lead they can identify with. Even women movie-goers want this. Notice how women did not show up for Marvels? This whole “the force is female” activism has divided and ruined Disney. The force is everyone. If they ever remember that the ship will be righted.
That’s part 1. Part 2 is regardless of male or female centric, you better hire mature writers who actually know how to write compelling stories. Virtue signaling and pandering will not sell movie tickets.
This movie should have headed directly to Disney+. Feels like a Disney+ movie.
John I like your stuff but making Dar-Benn a male villain in the movie might have helped since Dar is male in the comic and I know you don't like to hear it but people are getting fed up with the race & gender swapping and if the rumour is true the silver surfer is the next swap
She is just not menacing, even from the trailer, its so lame.
The Silver Surfer rumour isn't about gender swapping or race swapping.
It's about them not using that character and going with a different herald to Galactus that is female from the comics.
It WOULD'VE helped if the villain is well written. I don't think the casual audience has even heard of the character. I certainly don't and I'm not a casual audience.
@@sandyh2b it's a rumour from the last 24 is literally about a female silver surfer a female version of radd
They're trying so hard to jump around and not say that captain Marvel is a bad character and that nobody ask for the marvels, n they just keep making all of these different excuses and not just saying the truth nobody cares about these characters
That "nobody asked for this" argument is stupid. Nobody asked for a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but it was awesome. Nobody asked for a Shang Chi movie, but it was awesome. Who was asking for an Iron Man movie back in 2008? No one.
After the failures of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, a lot of people didn't want to see another Batman movie, but then we got the Dark Knight trilogy.
Fans are stupid and fickle. As an overall committee, we don't know what we want. We can only see things in hindsight.
The best movies you've ever seen are movies you didn't ask for.
@@looooooooobyUhh, no - fans are NOT stupid nor fickle. When good script writing is there, decent special effects added AND great talent TOTALLY vested into the project - success USUALLY is granted to the studio.

A movie franchise CAN NOT survive, and thrive, with a fractured audience. Look at DC. Look at Star Wars. I think that's the main takeaway here, and it looks to be one Marvel and some of it's fans seem to have forgotten. The MCU was built on movies that most audiences AND critics loved. And it appears to be dying on ones that some audience members like and some hate, and that some critics like and others hate. I don't know the exact path they should take, but if the MCU is gonna get anywhere near the point it started at, they're gonna have to start appealing to the wider, more general audiences again. Stay away from the politics. Just make fun movies.
And of course, Kevin Feige is gonna need to truly take the reigns again, AND IF POSSIBLE, find some actual MCU fans within the industry to start leading these projects going forward. Stay away from the people who have never watched an MCU movie/show or read atleast one comic book in their life. If you have true fans, like the Russo Brothers, pay them whatever they need to be paid to keep them involved. They were part of the rise of these movies.
the nerdrotic hate industry crowd has won
I didn't watch this film. Because the last several Marvel films that I did watch. I regretted spending the money on.
What shocks me is that they have people who should have known that this would happen. People who are probably paid a shit ton of money.
I hope this is the wake up call that finally wakes up Feige from his creative coma. The MCU films are no longer an "event film"
Maybe Feige never really envisioned where to take the franchise after Endgame 🤷🏽♂️. And the way Disney/Marvel pivoted to churning out too much content that in no way one man manage is why the Marvel is sinking.
They didn’t quit while they were ahead. They concentrated on low level characters with bad writing, and bad direction. The TV series were absolute garbage. They should’ve stopped, regroup, and start with a new line of storytelling. They also need Directors and writers that actually read comics. Unbelievable.
This is why I say that Marvel TV shows before Disney Plus were alot better though they had their issues but none of them were as bad as Inhumans.
@@danielgarnette5179 I gotta admit the in humans was terrible lol.
Is the Panderverse falling apart ?
John can't acknowledge the panderverse, he's Canadian.
Pander? By doing…..?
@@benm5970 it's well explained in a both educational and hilarious manner in the recent South Park episode called "Into the Panderverse"
People aren't rushing to a movie theater anymore to see the 33rd installation of a movie they've seen before. I've been supporting comic films for almost 40 years now and now it's just too much to care anymore good or bad.
Oh shit robs back? Haven’t watched in a while! Happy to see that :)
You know they're calling Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans everyday, leaving a trail of money from their front door to the Disney offices. They need to recast Cap and Iron Man if they dont come back.
Sisterhood of the traveling powers 🤣
The Marvels legs not only worst among MCU but worst all marvel/dc movies including Morbius, Catwoman, The Flash.
Nah The Marvels is Masterpiece
Mikes take is right on target……I saw every Marvel movie in theaters from Blade to Avengers End Game….now I really have to think about it to spend my dollars with them again. Not knowing what the content is and here is no bigger story to follow.
Now let's bring up that Alita movie again: 170M costs, 400M box office, with a low budged in advertising and running in low number of cinemas, against Captain Marvel in the height of the MCU hype.
But they go on making movies no on wants to see and do worse, while it's still not confirmed that we will get a sequel.
This movie was TERRIBLE ! Disney keeps churning out garbage, look at the Star wars and Indie IPs. Quality over quantity 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
The Sony Marvel movies aren’t giving the IP that break. Audiences think it’s all connected. Madame Web trailer looked like a skit, not giving Marvel a break from mediocre 😬
You Didn't Watch it, The Marvels is Good
It's crazy that they wasted whole Phase level potential ideas, like Civil War, Secret Invasion, and World War Hulk. Did nothing with Strange and Mordo. Wasted Gorr's epic story. Deprived us of T'Challa vs Namor. Wasted Kang 3 times. Used the fucking Illuminati as joke.
All for this piece of shit Multiverse.
When you put it like that - it’s actually crazy
It is kind of insane, isn't it?
Damn😂.
Disney+ literally ruined MCU……
Remember those days when it was exciting when even a minor superhero would get hinted in a MCU movie? Yup Disney+ shat on that too…Now every single unnecessary hero getting a 5+ episode series……
For me things started going down hill when they started doing t.v. show as well
Throwing this out there without yet watching the video - another thing really killing Marvel right now I believe is the mindset I’ve had since Shang Chi… why pay to go see the movie in a theater, if I can wait a month or so and watch it for free at home? Phases 1 - 3 you couldn’t do that. Disney+ is likely killing Marvel more than we think. It’s not just the over-saturation of mediocre TV.
Fanboys don’t read nor collect Captain Marvel. General public never heard of the Marvels. Most importantly, Brie Larson is polarizing. All pointed to guarantee failure. Even Stevie Wonder can see that this was a bomb before it hit the theaters.
I feel like the MCU is now resting on its laurels. I am just not invested anymore. 🤷🏻♀
I miss it though...the hype, the buildup, just the fun of it all.
Seems bots online don't buy a lot of tickets, oh well 🍿
John’s gonna break his back with all the contortions he’s doing to excuse this garbage movie.
He can't outright trash any movie on his show. His owners have owners, and they all in some way lead back to someone or something that has a connection to a movie studio that provides something to UA-cam. If he wants his show to keep making money he has to recognize what side his bread is buttered.

John C acknowledged that Trolls 3 ate up theater audience from The Marvels.
Trolls 3 is Marvel Cinematic Universe level.
This failure will hopefully be the final straw for marvel and their current film making direction. It is proof that that style is not profitable. They need to re ignite the passion from its fan base . They don’t need a reboot but they need start doing what the first few phases were doing. They don’t even need to come up with storylines….the comics have literally hundreds of fantastic arcs not yet used.
That’s what they’re doing right now. Remember they said after Ant Man 3 they were gonna cut back and start focusing more on quality than quantity
And Marvel tried to set the young avengers movie through this movie, this movie was already a BOMB I cant wait to see the Young Avengers Movie to be a BIG BOMB as well. Way to ruin the legacy of our beloved Avengers by discount female superheros who no one cares about
The problem with this movie. Is the writing the marvels is captain marvel 3, without giving us captain marvel 2 all these events that happened didn't need flashbacks it needed to be a movie. Carol says she fought a civil war in space 🤦🏾♂️That's your movie.
Well besides a lot of factors that have already been discussed everywhere …
a big reason why these MCU movies are failing is exactly the same problem that comic books in general have had for years ….
Too much confusion and continuity.
Very difficult for general audiences to follow and care about.
( especially all this multiverse stuff!)
Plus, there’s no doubt about it - people are just burnt out on Comic book movies right now.
Through the history of cinema, every single genre of film has had this happen.
So why should anyone be surprised that comic book movies would be any different?
They are really going to need to take a little break- both DC and the MCU.
Maybe even a couple of years.
Then come back with a huge event that everyone will feel they HAVE to see.
Probably the truest statement out of all of this.
Well, speaking of Death Proof, it was a group of women that took down Kurt Russell's character and the theater was clapping when the credits started.. It's like once this stupid narrative started to get pushed 5 or so years ago, all those movies were forgotten about.
The reality is super hero films has run its course. If its not the big guns Spiderman Batman Superman you can forget about it.
In the comics the villain is a guy. This movie was more concerned with virtual signaling and trying to attract a female audience.
If they made the villain a man, and the story was three women taking down an evil man, all of you people would be crying that it’s “man-hating.”
@@ethan-scott most (NOT ALL) of us wouldn't because the character that she is playing is a man in the comics. So that would be true to the comics. Last mcu movie I went to see was doctor strange 2 i like the movie but I had alot issues with it once the stakes of the infinity saga was over where do u go from there and then the Disney Plus shows not hitting like they thought from what I here u had to watch secret wars ms marvel to understand what was going on in the marvels
Nobody cares about a movie with an unkillable unlikable ‘lead’ and two nobodies who are all women, fighting a pointless unthreatening bland female villain with appearances from another unlikable character in Valkyrie.
My question is….where are all the feminists at? They surely should be going out seeing this movie over and over and over again because them women gotta rule the world
Well, feminists are people too and maybe not interested in boring nobodies
@@elenavorobeva6747Or maybe they are just full of it. All talk, no walk.
Agreed! There used to be story, plot and purpose with Marvel! but now, well now there is no story, plot and purpose 😢
Kinda like Kathleen Kennedy is running Marvel Now....
agreed on REALLY needing this break.
Deadpool 3 should be a good pallet cleanser while they do whatever fixing they need to do to figure out what on Earth they're doing with their direction overall.
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Fantastic Four.
Turns out the Ike Perlmutter was probably a good check on Feige.
He was fired before phase two started.
@@mankunfong4194 Perlmutter was relieved in 2015 over a dispute with the budget for the Doctor Strange movie, which was a phase 3 movie, all of which was already set in stone as far as movies to be released.
Phase 4 is the first phase in which Feige had no one to check him for the entire time.
@@mankunfong4194 Kevin Feige moved from under him after Civil war which was in 2016. That was phase three.
Honestly, this might be the best thing to happen to Marvel and maybe superhero movies in general. In my opinion, the writing in majority of these films have been piss poor. I think the studios feel they can slap any half-baked, unimaginative story and add superheroes to it, we as fans will come running. Fans are not stupid, we want quality in our movies, with interesting story elements and characters. The crap these studios have been putting out has been detrimental to their business. What makes it worse is when you have a good movie sandwiched in between all the garbage, no one wants to go to the theaters to see it because you lost all the good will and trust from the fans. We will just wait 45 days for it to come on streaming and watch it then.
