America's MMA and amateur wrestler Ben Askren competed in the 74 kg weight category at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Askren won his first fight against István Veréb from Hungary to the score of 0-2, 4-0. In his round of 8 match, he lost to Cuba's Iván Fundora 1-3, 0-4.

Ben was an Olympic wrestler, champion in multiple fight promotions and people will only know him as the dude who got ko’d in 5 seconds by Masvidal and got knocked out in 1 min against Jake Paul.
Not everyone will know as that only the 12 year old jake paul fans mma guys will always respect him as a wrestler his striking is the worst in the mma and also had surgery and he's retired

I'm so glad that despite his recent loss, more and more people outside of MMA discover Ben Askren and get to know that despite the memes, he has always been a spectacular athlete, a classy human being, and a far cry from his "boxing opponent" and that circus of an "boxing event".

Ben is the most chill high level athlete haha. The dude went to the Olympics, champion in two different MMA promotions and now doing a little boxing while retired and overweight. Through all of that he is probably the most down to earth fighter, super humble and as real as they come. I’m rooting for Ben regardless of the outcome.

As the ref was trying to hold his hand up in victory, Ben was literally trying to help his opponent up. That speaks volumes in difference of character between Ben and paul.

I'm sad to think that this guy became a joke for some people because of the fight against masvidal, the truth is that ben is a great fighter, his victories in bellator and in the olympic games prove this
The funny thing is there is a reason why Masvidal employed that flying knee! He had to lol!
If Madvidal didn't come flying out of the gate (literally), he would probably have lost the fight. There is no way he would beat Askren grappling, though he does train BJJ. He knew that Askren wouldn't strike and would dip his head for the takedown, so the victory was basically down to doing his research than it was about being the better fighter.
If Masvidal fought Askren without watching his clips, he probably would have lost the fight, whereas Askren would have beaten Masvidal without any research. I don't say this to take away from Masvidal, obviously doing research is part of fighting, so my previous point should not be taken too literally.
I only mean to say that Masvidal was relying HEAVILY on his game plan going perfectly. If Masvidal hadn't executed the knee so perfectly, it would have been a very difficult fight for him.
A similar situation is at play with Usman. The ONLY way Masvidal even stands a chance against Usman is if his game plan goes perfectly once more, whereas Usman can beat Masvidal in 20 different ways. He doesn't have to be perfect.

hes not really a great fighter though, all he knows how to do is wrestle, hes a 1 trick pony, which is why so many people dislike ben, including dana white because hes a one dimensional fighter and hes boring to watch because of that. its why he got destroyed in the ufc. not to mention is very cocky and arrogant despite his poor very fighting skills outside of wrestling.
Don't forget about ONE championship, ben was solid there as well

No, the unbelievable part is that this is his biggest fight ever. He’s been doing stuff like this after retirement forever. I think he entered the midlands after college, had an exhibition match against Herbert a long time ago, wrestled Burroughs a year or two ago. This is nothing new.

Being respectful is wrestling customs, the sport is very hard so it humbles yourself
I went to the same high school as Ben (I'm a lot younger) and my coach was his same coach. I later went on to train at Askren's Wrestling Academy when I decided to wrestle year round. My main coach there was Mesenbrink, his high school coach and business partner, but Ben and Max would come in regularly to coach. It's surreal to watch him at the height of his career when I just know him as Coach Ben. That cradle he used there is something we drilled non stop since kindergarten, and his effort to go out of his way to shake the hands of his opponent's coaches is something we were taught to do from the beginning.
It's just so cool to take a look at the past and see how these traditions have been passed on. Makes me want to go back to that high school and help coach the next generation.
Me thinking this video is another UA-cam algorithm that got recommended to me after 13 years.

This not only demonstrates Ben's technical skills, it shows his conditioning was/is next-level. He made Vereb gas after the first two minutes. Keep this in mind come Saturday. Jake is going to be sucking at air by the second or third round, Ben will be fresh.

Askren was the king of holding s position. That final pin, that single leg entry, at an olmypic level, never deserved to solidify that position and secure the takedown. He was an elite tactician, minimal effort maximum control.
