  • 0:00 This series is called, “How to actually play over Giant Steps”. My goal is to help beginner or new to jazz players navigate charts with lots of fast moving chords. In this first part I show you a technique called “harmonic reduction”. A great tool to learn to play over tunes with lots of chords.
1:18 In part 2 I show you the true skeleton of the form and how section 1 is actually the same as section 2.
2:36 In part 3 I show you how to use your chord tones with 2 measure phrasing. Also an easy pentatonic substitution for each chord.
3:58 In part 4 I show you how to add in the dominant chords to play one measure phrases and another awesome pentatonic hack. Please watch parts 1-3 first and Stay tuned for the final parts 5-6!
5:25 In part 5 I show you how to add in the ii in front of the dominant chords to play half-measure phrases. I also break down the hardest part of the tune and teach you another easy pentatonic hack and a symmetrical hack.
6:52 In part 6 I thought it would be fun to blow your mind a little to explain why the construction of Giant Steps is so complex. I have compressed a graduate thesis level analysis of the theory behind giant steps into a 90 second clip. You’re welcome lol and I hope you enjoy this!

@@jareddavismusic I play bass, I have watched many videos on playing giant steps, but never got further than playing the main melody by year.. This lesson opened up improvisation in new way for me because you broke giant steps down in this way

@@jareddavismusic I mostly focus on baroque composition right now, but I would love to see your perspective on learning jazz standards, this format through levels was wonderful. Maybe try using the same style of teaching, but on a simpler piece?

@@tavinmj Nice! Love baroque music and especially Bach, but also have other favorites like Corelli. and I could definitely do that!
