I was worried about replacing my high-end older oasis with this one ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCgPI5O2AtmcHq9SJhgsCGbpAzJAJfrJp but it is surprisingly light and the screen resolution is just as good. I never had the warm light on my old kindle, but i do not use it on the ipad so I will probably not need it. I think the only thing I'll miss is the self-adjusting light, but this is so worth it!
If you are having this issue this video is a god send, I will admit it took me a few minutes to find the proper page to download the precious software update but it was well worth it and I am beyond the moon excited! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!
Hello My friend. With the firmware update 3.4.3 for the kindle 3, can you access the web pages (wikipedia, amazon, etc.)? I am with the "3.4.2" update, and I cannot access Wikipedia because of the message: "kindle web browser is unable to establish a secure connection...".
This worked well HOWEVER, keep in mind that if you have older versions of the software on your Kindle you'll have to install 1 or two previous versions before you can install the latest version for this device. Great content...thanks!
As of November 2021, these instructions were still useful. Thank you so much Seven Layers! I was able to connect to my Amazon account and view my books. The only thing that's not possible is browse the Kindle store from the device as this has been retired.
Holy Moly you did it! I'm relatively tech savvy and I've been at this for hours (finding an app/program to open BIN file, trying to convert a BIN file, you name it, I googled it). I even downloaded 3 programs that could convert BIN to ISO but kept giving me errors when selecting the software update file. Who knew it could be so difficult to update a kindle? Why update in the first place, when you should be able to transfer an ebook from Amazon directly onto the device plugged into PC. Thank you very much for this video, it saved me from pulling my hair out!
Thank you so much for this - I received an older model as a gift, and this really helped me update it. As a note for others - the Kindle Keyboard serial number B008 seems to have a flawed update on the Amazon site for 3.4.2. I ended up going to Softpedia for that, and took a chance on the download, then finished up as described for the rest of the updates off of the Amazon site.
I can’t be sure this is the exact same link, but I searched for amazon kindle 3.4.2. You might try this link: drivers.softpedia.com/get/Tablets/Amazon/Amazon-Kindle-Keyboard-Firmware-342.shtml
june 2020 and this was what I needed. Followed amazon stuff but was missing the version number match step... I only had 3.4 and needed to click for the older version updates. All good now. YOUR R THE BEST!!
This worked perfect April 20, 2020!!! Thank you so much. Customer service was closed and the last time I called they told me the kindle was old and they would just sell me a new one. I didn't want a new one. I wanted my Kindle Keyboard with lifetime 3g to work again. You saved the day for me!
It is now 2020 and this video helped me get a kindle that I bought for $20 running again! I was so afraid I would have to throw it out. Thank you so much!
I couldn't figure out why I was having problems with the kindle despite my connection being okay. Your video was just what I needed. Thank you so much for sharing 👍 ☺
Thank you so much for this video. I thought my kindle was broken, and I was going to throw it out and buy a new one. But this video helped bring my kindle back to normal, working condition.
Thank you! We have fixed a used kindle that was gifted to us. Thanks for making this video. Having a step by step video guide made this process much, much easier.
love from Korea. I recently bought an old (4th gen.) kindle and it was impossible to log in with it. BUT your video saved me!!!!!!! i can finally use my kindle! yay!!!! thank you so much!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO!!! A friend of mine gave me one about 6 months ago, as it was just lying around her house, and I wasn't able to get the thing to do...well, anything. I was about ready to throw it away but something told me to Google it one more time and here I am! (Yep, I get long-winded at times, lol) Anyhoo, I'm just thankful to have found this video so i can FINALLY use this thing! God bless!
Thank you so much for this video! I recently fixed my broken Kindle keyboard screen, placed a new battery and with this software update - it's as good as new!
Thanks for the video. Regarding Kindles with Serial number B00E versio 4.0, my advice is to download first two updates (version 4.1 and 4.1.1) together and install other updates (4.1.2, 4.1.3, and 4.1.4) one by one
Had a Gen 4 still running on version 4.0, and I was at my wits end trying to get my new First Reads downloaded. You're a life saver - I only wish I'd found this before doing a factory reset T^T
Thank you so much for this. I was very frustrated by not being able to activate my recently bought Kindle from Ebay. One bit of advice for others, I was receiving a text to my phone to input a one time use passcode instead of my password. More than a bit frustrating, several attempts, but now everything is working properly. This is a very well produced video with easy to understand instructions. I cannot thank more than enough.
How did you end up doing it? similar boat where I got it all updated but it wont register. It's been a tricky puzzle for sure. I managed to get that one time passcode once but never again. Mines a keyboard model from 2010-ish
Thanks! I'm smart enough to be able to do this myself, but UA-cam recommended this video to me as a side effect of my research, so thanks for producing this video for people who may not know that they could do it! I bought a Kindle 3rd gen that the previous owner last used in 2012 and tossed in a drawer somewhere. After 10 years, the battery swelled up, so I replaced it, and it was running firmware 3.3, so I had to manually update it all the way to 3.4.3 in order to sign in. I've also seen some people on eBay and such who sell 'spares and repairs' Kindle e-readers because they couldn't log in, but I imagine they didn't figure out that they had to leave it connected to Wi-Fi for some time for it to then sync the time and log in, and/or they may have had to update the firmware.
Thank you! This was so tough to figure out on my own!!!! I was on version 3.3... 4 updates behind. I was confused about why I couldn't connect to wifi anymore. You're a saint, sir.
@Luiza Habib if you’re are like me you can’t connect to wifi anymore. You’ll need a computer and then go to “Amazon.com / Previous Software Updates for Kindle E-Reader”. Download the closest update to to your currently version, plug your kindle into the computer, and drag the file (the update) onto your kindle (it should start the update automatically). Then repeat this for the next (newer) update. And so on. I was on 3.3 at first... had to download and add 3.4, then 3.4.1, then 3.4.2, then 3.4.3... AND THEN I could finally connect to the wifi. Just a heads up, it takes a while to do. If I recall correctly, it was something like 45 mins to get it all updated again.
so helpful your clear instructions and video..so grateful to people like you who are thinking of others like me who are at times clueless why things don't work...muchos gracias!
Mine was a 4th Gen with 4.0 version. Brand new still in box sealed. Thanks to your video I got some idea of what to do. My issue was a few steps different but very similar
I purposely bought an older kindle not knowing that it wouldn’t be able to register my account. I wouldn’t have bought it. But I’m updating it now so I’m really hoping it works out 🤞
I want to share my experience in case it helps others. A few days ago I bought and received a used Kindle Touch (4th generation) D01200 from a seller online. I wasn't sure it was going to work. When I received it, it came with a charger that was not the original kindle charger. When I plugged it in, it didn't even turn on the little light. I was worried it wasn't working. I looked through my stuff and found a charger I already had that might fit, and this at least turned on the little power light. But on the screen it showed a picture of an empty battery. This worried me and made me think that the kindle was not charging. As I was sitting next to it, I was googling the issue and after several long minutes the screen changed and the kindle powered up on its own. I was VERY happy to see this. After that, I put in the information to get it connected to our wifi, and this connected pretty easily. I had no problems with it recognizing our internet. But the next step of connecting it to my Amazon account did not go so well. It kept saying "Unable to connect, try again later". This is how I ended up here at this video. Now the guy in the video does not have the same version of kindle as me, but I followed his instructions anyway. And also, this video is several years old too, so things change. So I went to Google and I googled "amazon kindle software updates" and the page comes up that the video shows. The page has a list of kindle models, and I scrolled down until I found my kindle model (the Kindle Touch 4th generation D01200). It then instructed me to check which version of the kindle updates my kindle had. So to do this, I had to go to the Settings menu inside of my Kindle and go to where it says "Device Info" and this told me which update was currently being used. My kindle had a very old update, so I needed to download 2 updates. I made sure to follow the links on that Amazon kindle update page. To get the updates onto the Kindle, I plugged the charger into the computer but guess what? The USB cord that I was using to charge the kindle didn't work to get the computer to recognize the kindle. I found a USB cord that was made for a gaming controller to plug into the computer, and I used that to plug the kindle into the computer and this worked! The computer was finally able to recognize the kindle after this. Also, the kindle is very slow, so take your time with every step. This is where this video helps a lot again. The kindle showed up as another drive ( drive E ) and so when I click on the update from Amazon's webpage, it downloaded it to my computer (make sure to download the file to a place on your computer where you can find it). After downloading the first update that my kindle needed, then I drag and dropped (or copy and paste) the file into the drive E Kindle file that shows on the computer. This could take a couple minutes to go into the Kindle. Once that one was done, I decided to disconnect the Kindle. You must right click on the Drive E Kindle file and click "Eject" so that it will disconnect the kindle from the computer safely. After that you can unplug the kindle. I then turned the kindle off and back on again, and then the Kindle started to update on its own, and the it showed on the kindle screen a message "Updating, please do not turn off your device this could take a few minutes". If this does not happen you should do what the video shows and find in the menu where it says "Update Your Kindle" and click on that. Once the kindle has finished that process, what I did was go to Settings and look at Device Info so that I could make sure that it showed the new update. And it did work! So I repeated the process for the second update, by plugging it into the computer again, moved the downloaded file of the next update into the Kindle Drive E. After that was done, I ejected the connection of the kindle to the computer and unplugged it. Then the Kindle updated. After this, my Kindle was able to connect to my Amazon account. I am VERY happy with the result.
This did not work the first couple of times i did this. Then i realized i was running on an old update 3.0.1 so i had to download the lowest update they had then download the new update for it to work. Thanks for the head start and the information. I have a new kindle i bought from the thrift store for $1 that now works. what a steal!!!!
Thank you so much for this video. My kindle keyboard is like brand new only used it one year after they came out and wanted to use again and was having a hard time doing anything with it but your video helped me tremendously. Now I can use it again and use my fire for just videos.
A bit confusing at times, but nevertheless the video was very helpful and I was able to update my Kindle Keyboard. Thanks for posting this video...much appreciated!
i kept trying to do this but my kindle wouldnt connect to my computer. i assumed that even though it says it's connected to the internet, it wasn't really for some reason. but then i saw this video, and knew that wasn't the case. i eventually changed out my usb cords, and it finally worked!!! woohoo!!
I downloaded the update and put it on my kindle but the option to update on the kindle is greyed out so I can't choose it. I restarted it and it's still coming up with this error message. Any ideas?
Thank you very much for your video. It is really useful. Finally, I could manage to shop at the Kindle store with my "Old" Kindle paperwhite 3rd edition. Thanks again:)
I know I am super late with seeing this. I'm trying the update my 3rd gen kindle but can not get past usb drive mode when I connect it to my computer. So even with transferring the file I still don't get the update feature in setting. So sad.
You're still helping people in 2023, well done and many thanks from Australia!!! :)
Were you able to successfully update a Kindle Keyboard in 2023? Mine is in perfect condition, not used for a couple of years but it keeps failing : (
I was worried about replacing my high-end older oasis with this one ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCgPI5O2AtmcHq9SJhgsCGbpAzJAJfrJp but it is surprisingly light and the screen resolution is just as good. 7.10.20 and this video is still relevant and more helpful than Amazon Tech Support who said it is unfixable.
Thanks so much for this video
If you are having this issue this video is a god send, I will admit it took me a few minutes to find the proper page to download the precious software update but it was well worth it and I am beyond the moon excited! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!
If you are way behind like I was (version 3.3) you need to download the newer updates between your current and the newest one by one.
This was so helpful. I bought a used Kindle and thought that it was broken until I found this video. Thank you so much!
Now this video is relevant in mid-2020. Thank you!
Well, it worked just fine. Thank you for posting this. The instructions at Amazon are very confusing. I appreciate this video very much.
This worked well HOWEVER, keep in mind that if you have older versions of the software on your Kindle you'll have to install 1 or two previous versions before you can install the latest version for this device.

Just used this guide to update my 5th generation paper white I have not turned on in about seven or eight years. Worked a treat! Thanks so much!

Much better than Amazon's explanation -thank you!
Amazon's explanation lead to web of multiple solutions that are for other purposes. this video is quick, straight to the point...
Amazon’s explanation was useless.
I'm so glad I found your video. Worked like a charm, thank you.😎
Thanks for the great video. Simple and concise and easily understood. Helped me get my old Kindle Keyboard model back online!
Your little hack saved a 4th gen kindle I just bought. Gracias!

Thank you brother, this video is still relevant in 2021.

I know I am super late with seeing this. I'm trying the update my 3rd gen kindle but can not get past usb drive mode when I connect it to my computer. So even with transferring the file I still don't get the update feature in setting. So sad.
