Sweet, savory and spicy together is a wonderful combo! Love the crushing sound effect with the garlic. And very interesting to hear the history of the national dish!
All your recipes are so hearty and comforting, thanks for this one, appreciate your personality, jokes and also the funny comments you leave on other videos which is how I found you!
Absolutely amazing, incredible and delicious. Looks superb tasty and yummy... Great recipe my friend. Thanks for sharing this yummy recipe. Stay safe. Good luck :)
I've never heard of this dish before but I really like the name. It's gonna be in my head the rest of the evening...Bobotie bobotie bobotie haha. I make turmeric rice all the time not knowing it is a thing, I just like the color so I thought I made it up 🤦♀️🤦♀️. I'm not a raisin fan in food either but I guess it could work cos I like a lot of Middle Eastern food and they always have dried fruits and nuts in them. What a beautiful dish, it's so vibrant and has excellent flavor profile. Would it be wrong to add some fresh chilies in it for extra spice? I'm enjoying your South African Recipes because I like to imagine and virtually taste new foods. Excellent job on this one! 👍LIKE #19
Thanks! Yeah very rarely do I like fruit and nuts in savory stuff but for this it's perfect! I'd love some extra chilies in there, my wife's a bit of a wimp when it comes to spicy 😅
Interesting dish! Never tried this before! I like new and unique dishes! I like the spices and raisin with nuts here! Looks full of flavor! I like your rice!😋
That looks really great and I love all the different flavors with the rasins and chutney / tumeric / curry... The custard was a surprise for me but it makes a lot of sense. Looks really good and I'll have to play around with similar recipes. Really cool dish!!
I’ve never heard of this recipe before but I know that I would enjoy it. I love rice and mince, garlic salt and the eggy custard at the end. Very nice 👍
Bobotie you beauty!!! What a delicious looking dish!!! I've been *ground* into submission with the glorious beef and amazed by the *grape* decision to include those raisins...Wonderful cooking Graham, more South African food please...How about Bunny Chow or something using Rooibos?
I had to Google bunny chow.. and now I'm in a *curry* to make a big batch of that and eat it all myself 😂 Oh South africa, you're crazy. But I love you! Thanks for the suggestion patrick, that's a good one for sure!
Pretty good actually, well done. Of course I have gripes with your pronunciation but you are indeed right that it has variants. I usually brown my onions first and leave out the nuts because of my daughter's sensitivity to it but that's no big deal at all. I love that top layer so my recipe has it doubled, when cooked it's all spongy and light and lovely. The rice had the perfect colour, I was impressed! My grandmother usually just adds an entire packet of "spice for rice" to get that so I was impressed by how easily you got the same result! Overall well done and thankee for making one of my favourite dinners!
I consider that high praise from a proper South African! Thanks Coreen. I actually almost doubled the egg mix on mine too but I wanted to ease my wife into this, sometimes "new" things freak her out! But she liked this enough to request I make it more often. So how do you say it? I got how I say from my mom so we can just blame her 😂
I really was impressed it's quite close to what you'd find here @@Passionforfoodrecipes and every household has their own take so it is actually perfectly on point. This is can now be a family recipe for you haha so be sure to pass it down. I think this is how such recipes are created, then adjusted then written down. I've told you about how vol kak my husband and son is too and they adore bobotie so I'm glad that translated to your wife too! I'm so happy you found something that she likes that much! Say it as: The bab baboon The long u from jury And a short tea Bab.u.tea That was more difficult than anticipated amazing how it has no o in the pronunciation. Also as I said, there are variants, and as you said, it's not a Safrican only recipe. Very much inspired by the melding of Dutch Colonial and Cape Malay cuisine. Some people make in in a leaf! Not sure how that works though and it's more of that meatloaf type you spoke of. My recipe gets both chutney and jam and has many more ingredients and parts and steps than yours, you simplified it greatly! Perhaps I should make it, my husband loves it... I'm taking mince out to defrost as I type this. Maybe I'll let you know how it went!
Welp I've made it @@Passionforfoodrecipes and my hubsand lOved it! He was so happy seeing it, totally worth it. Now, my measurements were totally off because I just threw all but the almonds in there after I browned the onion so it didn't come out crumbly or dry enough but still, very nice! I made it even more one pot by making the rice in the same pot after the mince and putting that rice at the bottom of the baking dish under the mince and egg. My pot doesn't go in the oven lol. I do think I added too much turmeric and too little salt.
Sliced banana sounds like it would work here. Raisins freak me out in anything that's not baked, but Ill take your word for it. You definitely know your African food, I don't remember but you either lived there, or were born there right? Either way this looks unique and delicious.
