I really like the New Matt FC Pitt pencils. I previously had the regular (non matt) FC pencils, they were good quality pencils consistant in grading but not as dark as I wanted compared to other brands. I have the full set up to 14B, that way I keep 1 with a sharp tip and the next grade with a broad tip for covering large surface. For sharpening I use "Uni Mitsubishi KH20" mechanical sharpener which I strongly recommend for graphite or colo pencils. BTW I also like Mitsubishi Hi-Uni graphite 22 pencils set, they do have a shine but they go up to 12B and even the high grade hard one are quite soft which I like for soft skin texture. Another good no shine dark pencil Are Staedtler (not Stabilo) Mars Lumograph BLACK, alternatively for portrait I also like Wolff's carbon pencil. somewhere between graphite and charcoal, but not as dusty as charcoal.
Lovely tonal portraits! I have these F-C Matt pencils, but I don't like using them as much as I thought I would. Although I like the matt finish, and they also smudge less than regular graphite, I don't like the the way they feel on the paper. Very subjective and not related to the quality of the pencils -- just me.
It's smudging less indeed... If I was using a normal 8b or 12b the page would have been a mess. But I get your point, it feels like they are not sliding on the paper as much as normal graphite pencils .
Have you tried Faber Castell or Stabilo black graphite matt pencils? What´s your impression?
I didn't know Stabilo made a matt pencil! Now I'm curious.
they are called stabilo lumograph black
Such a good tutorial, watched and enjoyed till the end ☺☺
