The split is used for 10 meter repeaters. The major flaw in this radio was no backup power for the memory channels. There is a solution for that, but it sucks. I purchased mine in 1986 and it still works well. In time those frequency switches will start to go bad. There are owners manuals out there on line. Good luck
Had 1 years ago great radio , the clarifier would slide between freaks, I have an external verbal power knob.
