i’m slightly surprised Williams didn’t do a Senna co-lab with MCL. I know he didn’t see the same success at Williams, but it definitely meant a lot to them too , and I always feel these two greatest of British F1 teams have so much common history that shouldn’t be denied.
Just like Lando and Oscar, I was born 6 years after his accident, so I never saw him race live, but if there's one person from the past from F1, that I would love to meet or even just see him on TV, it would be him.
I get you. I was fortunate enough to see him on tv for many years (was 15 y.o. when he passed...). Also, I happen to be Brazilian, which makes those times even more special. RIP, Ayrton.
I was 14 when he died. ANYONE who was an F1 fan can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when he died. Senna was bigger than Schumacher, Hamilton and Verstappen combined. The nearest person he was like was Muhammad Ali. Senna was bigger than F1. The only other driver who might have been better was Jim Clark (Senna thought so). Ayrton was definitely the fastest driver ever, no doubt.
couldn't be prouder to be a Papaya girlie - a heartwarming, respectful tribute to one of, if not the, greatest drivers to grace Formula 1 - Senna Sempre 🕊🧡
Aryton was my hero growing up, I always rooted for him above everyone. Some of his qualifying laps were just unbelievable. I was watching the race in Imola in 1994, live. It didn't look like that bad of a crash, but I knew it was a little more serious when they got a helicopter to lift him out to take him to hospital. I was devastated when I found out what had happened. To make matters worse, I'm American, so when I told my friends "guys you're not going to believe this, Aryton Senna died today!" with tears in my eyes, no one even had any idea who I was talking about. F1 was not big here at all back in the 90's. So that sucked. But I def go back and watch his race highlights over and over again. Great person, as well, from all accounts. Senna Sempre.
Everyone who followed f1 back then cannot forget that day, still this day remains not real... something truly hard to let go. Totally the worst person to lose!
When he moved his head, I (5 years old at the time) was absolutely sure he was still alive. I would never imagine that was his last breath. That was my first death, that I actually saw happening (I didn't watch Ratzemberger's accident on Saturday, and was all happy Barrichello survived his horrible one - it looked worse than Senna's! - on Friday). Imola 94 was such a tragic weekend for all of us.
McLaren done a whole lot of absolutely beautiful tributes to Senna. Not only this video but everything McLaren made for this weekend: livery, uniforms, documentaries, and even choosing Monaco to do that. It means a lot to me to seeing that Senna is not only a Hero to Brazilians but to the whole world. What a great person Senna was. Cheers to the King of Monaco!
For some of us, we weren’t fortunate enough to watch Senna race, but his impact is still felt 30 years on. Me, I’m only 20, but watching Senna’s races, seeing videos of him as a person, hearing stories from my father and my uncles who were lucky enough to watch him, to see him rise to the top of F1, it all means so much to me. Generally I don’t get emotional when I think of people who’ve come and gone, but for some reason that I can’t quite express, or at least a multitude of reasons of which I cannot pick just 1, Senna is one of the very select few who I feel so emotionally attached to and invested in. I don’t know if it has to do with his character, and how kind and down to earth he was, how humble he was, how much he gave to his people, how much he stood up for what’s right, or how he drove, how he never half-assed what he did, how he rose to greatness, how he never forgot his origins and what racing means to him. I think for me, that’s what I connect to most. We all have our stories, and racing means something to us all for our own reasons, but for me, the purity of racing, the drive to achieve perfection, to go faster, to get better lap after lap after lap, that’s what i connect to the most with Senna, and he was the embodiment of pure racing, but he was that with a pure heart. This is a wonderful reflection, and it’s heartwarming to see all these comments and stories of what Ayrton meant to everybody. Formula 1 is so different as an environment than what it used to be, but our love and admiration for one person brings us all together at times, and I find that beautiful. Senna Sempre 💚💛💙
Wonderfully said. Senna was pure racing indeed, sheer passion and dedication. He drove as if demons were chasing him, always on the edge, eager to push further and beyond the limit. He was also very charismatic and driven individual, who was captivating through and through. To put it in one word: special. He was very, very special. Racing to him was almost on the level of religious experience at times. He loved pushing his limits and sometimes performed miracles behind the wheel. In my opinion, he is the greatest, the soul of F1.
F1 nowadays is all about the glitz and glamour and I honestly don't care one bit about it. So when moments like this happen when teams take a moment to remember what truly matters, it makes me feel very happy to be a fan of racing and a fan of Formula 1. I'm really stoked to see the Senna-McLaren on track this weekend, good luck out there!
It’s great to hear these young drivers acknowledge the differences in difficulty in driving cars of the past to todays. A manual h-pattern gearbox and clutch among other things adds another dimension of physicality to an already physically challenging sport.
I was 22 years old in 1994, I followed Senna since the beginning, even other drives like Piquet, Prost, Lauda, Hunt, Villeneuve (I was watching when Villeneuve crashed), all those guys were amazing drivers but Senna had something special, It was not only his talent, but the way he managed it. He was so committed, aggressive, compassion at the same time, taking risks and fight with the organization for more safety conditions, it was something inside, something like the instinct vs conscience. Definitely, in my opinion, the best driver in F1 history and McLaren did a beautiful job celebrating the 30th anniversary without Ayrton in a great honor. 👏👏🙏
As a Senna fan I would dearly love to see Prost at McLaren this weekend. Senna would not have been Senna without him. Prost was Ayrton's benchmark and that must never be forgotten. The two of them were magic!
When I was a kid here in Bolivia the world class pop culture rock stars were: Ayrton Senna, Michael Jordan, Diego Maradona, Michael Jackson and Myke Tyson. I still remember the day of the terrible news.
Lovely piece. I wasn’t much of a fan at the time, as a youngster (I was 18 when the accident happened), I was obsessed with the GB drivers (Nigel and Damon primarily), so I didn’t see what he was doing as clearly as I can now, in retrospect. I remember Nigel picking him up at the British GP and I thought ‘hang on! They’re friends?!’ It blew my mind. It changed the way I viewed what he did on the track. It speaks volumes how many pro drivers have Senna as their idol. Senna was always respectful when talking about other drivers, which stood out - not all of the grid were like that in the 80’s
As a Brazilian, by having 3 years old I can barely remember his driving skills by watching it live. But judging few years later, by seeing people talking about him, I could understand that it was definitely not just the driver, but a hero for most people in Brazil. By watching him in the Sunday mornings was just a tradition and a moment to get out together in the family barbecue right after the race, meant so much to make a good part of Brazilians families that still have this tradition of getting together like then. But, personally, I believe that his spirituality was the most impacting thing. His eyes e calmness when speaking, especially talking about things offtrack, was such a relief for me. I'm obviously speaking about my self and he impacted me and a few people around me, but it's a joy awalys when I watch his videos. Senna the best...
The creative/production team at McLaren deserve huge respect. They are producing such incredible content. This was just beautiful, bravo! Two of the best and arguably most thoughtful, young men on the grid! Senna is the reason I found this sport and why I love McLaren. Thank you!
Love McLaren tribute to Senna. The livery and team wear looked fantastic at Monaco. Interesting to hear Lando + Oscar's thoughts. Senna was a legend on & off the track.
Thank you for the vid. He was so important for us in Brazil. I watched him race all my childhood until I was 12 when he died. I wish you guys could have been in our living rooms on Sundays...the atmosphere was electric. We couldn't wait for the races week to week. He was an amazing human being 😢💔🇧🇷on and and off the track. @@nollienick1121 As I said, although it's PR, McLaren is showing a lot more respect towards the man is what I feel, especially Oscar was quite honest about his opinion.
I was lucky enough to see Senna drive at Silverstone in 91 and remember Imola '94 like it was a couple of years ago. This was one celebrity death that cut deep - it hit very hard and F1 for me was very difficult to watch afterwards. It somehow seemed unreal that they not only carried on with the race but that the season itself also carried on after losing two drivers that weekend. As for Senna, absolute raw talent to drive these V10 beasts around with none of the technology of today and a manual gearbox - it's what makes him No1 in my eyes - the power and danger of the cars he took to the limit.
Oscar sounds like he has a genuine reverence for the history of this sport, which is very refreshing in an era when half the grid are nonplussed by it.
The end was by far the best part. Seeing that car driven by the master dart around and the sound is spine tingling. You never forget hearing the F1 V8 or V10’s for the first time. Senna would want smaller and lighter cars that are more visceral and harder to drive so the best drivers, like him, can differentiate themselves more from the mediocre drivers.

Got to see him race at GP in Phoenix. Witnessed him dominate Monaco to the point where it was boring. Very fortunate. Did not realize what was lost, it just took forever to hit me.
Senna doesn't have the most Championships or wins or poles. But Senna did more with a trash car than any driver in history. A measure of a driver's skill is in how fast they can make ANY car go, not just the best car. Senna proved time after time, he could produce results in a bad car or in adverse conditions on a level far above the rest. In fact, probably still above almost all drivers since.
