The only person more surprised about it's MOT success than you is me! Fantastic achievement for you and your son to get this back from a spare n repairs car.
Love the videos - bought a p38 in online auction about 3 yrs ago. 1996 4L v8. Been brilliant - yes like you guys list of jobs - radiator,, coolant bleed, handbrake, oil changes, fixed original radio / cassette, paint fade, hatch back hydraulic supports, battery changed,, parts easy to get - even in NZ. 26 years old 110,000kms sails through WOF (mot) every year. Love them
There's always a few jobs to do on a P38, just work through them one at a time had a long list of to do's on mine when I bought it three years ago, still need to sort the roof lining though 🤔
Great news! I'm really looking forward to you getting the red Safrane fully sorted and roadworthy. For some reason (possibly related to sitting in the driver's seat of one on the Renault stand at the 1992 British International Motor Show), I really like Safranes, especially the phase 1 versions. By the way, my Club PetrolBlog stickers arrived today! I'll stick them in my Volvos' windscreens at some point tomorrow.
Welcome to the club, James! Glad the stickers arrived. Red Safrane is on the list for January. The plan was to MOT the RR and 406, then move on to the rest of the fleet. Exciting times.
@@Petrolblog Good news. All of your fleet are interesting in their own way, so there is much potential for entertaining content while the Safrane waits its turn.
@@Petrolblog Well I took it out for its first proper drive yesterday, after smothering the sills with Bilt-Hamber. There really isn't much wrong with it, apart from it overcooling. The dash lights are pitiful, but the lack of PAS isn't a problem and the car feels very pointed and the engine has lots of Lazy power. You don't feel encouraged to thrash it as 40mph feels like 55 or more. The Passat steering wheel is quirky, and I might change it for an Audi one down the line, but right now priority is to 'run it in' with us and work out why it is overcooling. Maybe I will write an article...
Cool video as an owner of one of these. If the driver's door handle not returning fully annoys you ever, you can by the cam for it, not very much money at all, couple of quid from memory.
@@Petrolblog no worries, the part number is STC3063 and Rimmer Bros do them for just under a fiver each. Though appreciate you might not want to bother. I did them as the "last" job only to find another five jobs (all non door related) appear within a few days !
@@Petrolblog of course it is, but the next aim is to reduce the number of advisorys at the next test.. - It is better than having a list of failure points.
My Son turns 16 in a few weeks time and has been looking at cars for a while now. Sadly we dint have space to park anymore cars off the street let alone private land to drive them.
@@Petrolblog He's looked at a number of options that are probably a little beyond reach. 😅 We've gone from an Alfa MiTo to an Alfa 147. Problem is he will want the sporty one rather than the one that's insurable. He does like the MK1 and pre facelift MK2 Clio. He loves my Mégane coupe too. He found a very tidy looking MK1 Clio RSI advertised recently but at almost £5k and with a 1.8 engine it's not going to happen.
Hi Peter. I can't post a link because UA-cam will remove the comment, but you can buy the sticker from the shop on PetrolBlog [dot] com. Window and bumper versions available.
Trouble of the country where I live is that tax on an old Range Rover diesel (£2442 annually) will exceed its value. Though it might be a price willing to pay for German "Laufkultur" of the straight-six BMW engine.
If you have to pay someone money to ‘fit’ an exhaust, or repair the air suspension, then the P38 is not the project car for you or your son. The EAS is a very simple and easy to maintain system. Mostly everything on these cars are, but you need a good manual like the Rave manual, and spend some time to get to know the systems, like the EAS. These cars quickly gain a reputation for being expensive, because the owner takes the car to a shop every time the air suspension spits it’s pacifier out, or a light comes on on the dash. Learn to repair it yourself. And before castrating the thing by ripping the EAS out in favor of bedsprings, rather sell it to someone who is willing to keep it on air.
Proper size and proper font 'plates!
So happy to see it. In my opinion 'plates can either make or break a car. You, Sir have absolutely made it!
In fact, my colleague is looking for period plates for his LS400... Who did you get to make them up?
Thank you for noticing!
Try fancyplates.com. Also check out retroplates on Instagram. I'm going to ask them to sort plates for the ZX 16v.

Thanks. It's great to be able to drive it on the road.
What a great boost for your son. Excellent news. Most folks with an RR are complaining about how brokem they are and he gets to say how fixed his is.
I'm sure the 'here's everything that's wrong with the P38' video will follow next year!
Congratulations on getting the car through the MOT. As a real amateur myself, I think you've both done great work!
Thanks Nicholas. This and the Peugeot have been steep learning curves, but there's nothing like going in at the deep end!

Great news on the MOT! Glad to hear it can now be used on the road and off the road more often.
It has been used daily since the MOT, but I'm sure the novelty will wear off.
Great news!

That's fantastic news! Going from spares/repair to MOTed is really good. Wish the Audi 80 was the same, MOTed but it wouldn't pass now...
We need an update on the 80. Such a special car.

Great news on getting the P38 on the road, I’ve not long bought one of these myself on a 2000/W plate. They’re very addictive!
Good luck with yours, Paul. I've responded to your question on Twitter.
4x4 AirSeals do a great kit for reconditioning the EAS compressor..best I’ve come across
That's great news now I would get the dents all sorted and get the tailgate paint sorted and then it will look a lot better
Absolutely. We should be sorting the tailgate over Christmas. Actually looking forward to it.

Brilliant 👏 but the dents are doing my little ocd brain in... a bit.. maybe.😁 Excellent job all round..
Yeah, the dents aren't great. They'll be fixed... one day.
MOT is due very soon. how is it going.?
Update to follow soon.

Good lord! It's £280 over here, which is reasonable.
Have you still got the Laguna?
Yep. There was talk of moving it on, but it remains on the fleet... for now.
Such a cool first car. End of.
Better than a Lego set, too!
All the people, so many people, they all go hand in hand, hand in hand through our…park life.
Where are you based?
The West Country.
They're a good old bruiser the 38s. Don't rust like an L322, and hasn't got a GM gearbox that's made of chocolate...
Yep. Things will almost certainly go wrong, but getting it tested was a big step forward.
