Useful and straight to the point unlike a lot of these vanlife people who love the smellof their own farts
Thank you, it's simple and it works.
Dude, nice no frills build. Agree with others, “vanlifers liking own farts, fancy lights etc”. It’s been a few years, but thank you for sharing.
You Sir are a Master of many skills. My Uncle loved to take on projects and would usually come up with simple, effective solutions like you do. He called it "Homemade and handy". Lovely job on the van and if you drive for HI mileage it is easy to get 30 MPG in that van... PS My workshop solar has a 100 watt panel and a 12 volt car Battery. The battery has a vent for a small hose to take charging gas's outside. It was standard in most Saturn's with trunk mounted batteries. Good luck on your coming adventure...
Thank you and I appreciate your comment. Homemade and handy, I like that one. Thanks for watching.
I just got a small Van also...and Im going to do that Tarp canopy also...BUT...I m going to make the two poles slightly lower than the van and then put a center pole that is higher than the van...make it more like a tent. That way when and if it rains it will not fill up like a bath tub and collapse on you. Give the tarp better rain run off. Have fun on your trip....
Those are some good ideas. Thank you :)
omg that Cricket is killing me lol
Looks awesome!! However I would slightly rise the side of the tarp closest to the van so the rain can run-off, saving it from pooling in the middle!
Thank you and thanks for the tip!
That tarp/awning works great and it is huge! It more than doubles your living space. Is it difficult to set up? Now all you need to do is fill it up with gas and point it west.
Yes the final tarp set up is fantastic so far. It's real simple to set up, takes about 3 to 4 minutes. The same to take it down. Hopefully I'll be headed out in about a week. :)
Hey! Greetings fellow Iowan. Nice video, I'm looking at buying a Ford Transit connect to convert into a camper as well. Have you had any mechanical issues with the van or any odd things happen with it? Thanks! -Kyle
Hello Kyle, yes I have had transmission problems with my Ford Transit Connect. It's a common issue with this model vehicle unfortunately. I have made three videos on this subject if you are interested in watching them.

Have a 2012 Connect I plan to start touring in next year. Got a lot of good practical ideas from this. Thanks!
Awesome, have a good time with your build and even a better time touring it. I do recommend that you keep the van as light as possible. :)
Cool !
Wow!😲😲 Great work! Now you can go play! 😀🤘😎
I'm excited to take it out and see how it's all going to work. Thank you!
WannaBFree
Get Er done! Get that thing on a dirt road somewhere!
😬
I'll be on the road in about a week. YIPPIE!
I'm actually headed your way.
WannaBFree
Let me know when you get close... I should warn you, it's about to snow here in the next few days. 😬
I really like your awning, very good build and alot of ingenuity on this project!
Thank you.
Wow!! Looks Great!! I like the idea of putting the memory foam into a sleeping bag. Might have to try that. 👍🚐✌
I think it will work out just fine. Give it a try it's cheap, affective and multi purpose.
Yes, i put memory foam on top of my mattress pad in my car and it was such a great decision
Like your setup!!! Good job, looks great and can't wait to see how your travels go.
Take care,
Tina
Thank you :)
how tall is the cabin of the Ford Transit? could a short person stand up inside?
I'm about 5' 6" and I can't stand up straight but I can stand bent over and get dressed standing inside.
Wow, dude. I bet you are super excited to be doing this. Heck I'm excited for you. You leaving this month?
Thanks man and yes, I'm hopefully leaving in about a week. YAHOO!
I have a 2012 TC built out. Is your bed too high to sit on? My original build was too high. Had to lower it. Looks bice
My first bed in this van was a little high for sitting on. The second bed I built in this van is just right after some modifications. It's currently just right.
Looks great, and also very practical! It´s been fun following the process. I like the modification to the tarp setup. Have a great trip, and hope I can follow you on your way!
Thank you :)
Nice job.
You have done a great conversion.
You must be looking forward to getting on the road.
Thank you and yes, I'm getting excited to get started on this trip.
you should put your solar panel on top private Versailles you know like a curtain like privacy
Interesting idea you have there.
Nice job man.... enjoy the road.... thanks for making the vid!
I never thought of putting a solar on the back the way u have it mounted, will u get enough solar as compare to having it on top of the roof for maximum efficiency
The solar intake would be the same as long as I park or position the van so it doesn't shade the solar panel. There could be times when driving that perfect positioning is impossible and the panel is shaded by the van, in those instances this set up would not be as good as on top of the roof.
Im interested in some sort of mobile vacation machine, and that just might be my style LOL I have seen other videos of "Van life" that explain some of the drawbacks, have you come accross any of those similar drawbacks with this kind of rig? How long have you been going and what are some cons do this design(if there are any)? keep chasin the sun my brotha!
I think every rig has it's own drawbacks and those depend on the user's expectations. I am happy with my set up but I always think it can be improved upon. I've been on the road with this rig for about three months now. Since this rig is limited on space you just can't bring along a bunch of stuff. It would be real easy to overload this rig with a bunch of stuff. I am focusing on keeping my design, items and daily life simple but practical and so far it's been working out well for me. Thanks for watching :)
What kind of poles did you use for the awning and where did you get them from?
I am now using extendable paint roller polls from Wal-Mart. (Cheap)
I am looking for similar van. But I need it to be just a tad bigger (longer)
A little more space would be nice for sure.
They make a LWB Connect. That's what I'm looking at buying.
What did you use on the back of your window reflectix to make it black? I was thinking maybe fun foam and gluing the reflectix to that.
I have a video showing exactly how I made the window coverings. I just spray glued some dark felt to the reflectix. I was going to use black but I couldn't find just plain black so I used a dark grey and I'm pleased at how they came out.
They look great!
Thank you :)
Hmmmm....not bad WannaBFree. I like the simplicity and utility of ur build. The awning is a nice touch. What are u using to clip the tarp to your van with?
Thank you and so far it's been working out good. I am learning about the usefulness of this build. As I get more use out of it I am learning what I like and dislike and what possibly needs changed or adjusted to make it work the best for my needs.
Oh and I just used three cheap spring clamps that I picked up at the local hardware store to clamp the tarp to the mounts. I show them on my first awning video if you want to see what they look like.
No fancy wood panels or curtains?
No, I wanted a simple build on this van so I could get it on the road. After this first trip with it I'll know better what I need to add, subtract or change to make it suitable for my needs.
Great job,I've been watching this whole thing!one question is what are the poles you're using for your awning and are they available easily?also from experience I can tell you the fuses in the cigarette lighter style plugs are an odd size.no go from parts stores so had to order from Amazon.i think they're 5a 250v but odd diameter and length combo, just wanted to give you a heads up before you found out the hard way,lol
Yes, those poles are cheap paint roller extension poles. I got mine at Walmart but all the big box hardware stores carry them too. Thank you for the heads up on the fuses. I'll have to pop one out and see what size it is and order a box of replacements.
WannaBFree Check at Napa auto parts..they're an 8 amp fuse. Not normal diameter. Had a problem with my Dometic fridge and was replacing them alot. They're fairly expensive as well..10.00 for 5 I believe.
Use shade cloth instead of blue tarps for shade, wind does far less damage to it, no blow downs wind blows thru it. Shalom!
Thanks for the suggestion.
hey, is that a swb, or the lwb version? thanks!
To my knowledge the 2010 Transit Connect only came in one wheel base version. I think they started the long and short versions in the more recent model year. My 2010 Transit Connect is a 114.6" wheel base.
@@WannaBFree thanks for the quick reply! Here in Europe Ford offers two wb: short with 104.9, and long with 116.4 inch versions. Maybe your market wouldn't consider a short wb desirable, so it was not offered. I have an estate focus, but it's just not practical enough for my needs. And so as my wallet thickens with s*itloads of working hours, i'm considering to get a Connect like yours. So thanks again!
You are welcome and good luck with your project.
@@WannaBFree Before the "extended/LWB" the 2010 was the longest version. You did good!
Were did u get your solar panel at
I got it off Amazon
what battery are you using? lead-acid or lithium ion?
lead-acid
These small vans must be just like driving a normal car
That is exactly right. Drives like a car, parks like a car and gets fantastic gas mileage. Just can't beat it for one person in my opinion.
Careful you don't rip your license plate off going through a dip. Thanks for the video.
Thank you, I am afraid that may happen too but so far so good. Thanks for watching :)
Whats the lenght of the bed?
73"
You have such Rad Skills!! Say Hi to your sweetie!
Thank you and I will :)
Why did you put all the weight on one side of the van?
That's just how it worked out. First I wanted the right sliding door to be the entrance and exit. That door will be used the most and I wanted it on the curb side. That meant the bed had to go on the driver's side. I wanted to store the refrigerator under the bed to leave an open space to dress and maneuver and that open space had to go on the passenger side. I did put the heavy 12V house battery on the passenger side and I'm pretty sure it is heavy enough to offset the weight of the refrigerator on the driver's side.
WannaBFree Well the battery probably offsets the weight of that half bench you left in. But it couldn’t possibly be heavy enough to offset the bench, fridge and its contents, and clothes/gear in the totes, and wood for the bed, and your weight when you’re driving. When I first saw it I thought for sure you’re evening out the weight with a motorcycle or something a couple hundred pounds in that long open area. I would thing it would affect the drivability and maybe wear out the tires unevenly and also affect the anti-sway function and braking. Maybe you should check into it with some online researching or auto mechanics before doing expensive or irreversible damage to components of your vehicle. Just a thought that I wanted to share.
Anyway, I like the simple build you did. I’m going to follow your adventures for awhile 🙂
Those are all good points to consider and definitely worth some research. Thank you for your comments, suggestions and support for my channel. I appreciate any input you may offer.
Congratulations I'm super proud of you
Thank you :)
