Gensets were one of those things that looked great on paper but in real life were mechanically complex diasters. Instead of one prime mover and generator you now had to maintain multiple prime movers and generators in one unit. The hybrid units might be next to go. Hi Ethan, glad to meet you!!
Hi Ethan! I waved back at you; Thank you for the salute!
You guys should play taps when you catch a genuine funeral train.
BTW, as a Yooper by birth, it always warms the cockles of my heart to see Soo Line rolling stock still out there. It's getting pretty rare.
Not a bad idea for playing taps while a funeral train passes by. I like it.
0:13 two warbonnets, and two units that used to have warbonnet colors
1:38 CN and BNSF double heading with an oil train. the rear barrier car is a Wisconsin Central hopper and the DPU is a CN100 unit. I've seen similar CP+BNSF oil trains too
2:24 this BN green SD60M is leading quite a few trains recently
4:55 BNSF executive MAC as mid-train DPU on a UP train
6:26 Amtrak 108 "Red-Head" leading the Lake Shore Limited
9:38 CP plow train
9:58 closeup of BNSF 25th anniversary GEVO 5869
11:43 welded rail train reversing over the Plant City diamond
12:46 the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's full dome they got from Amtrak!
14:22 very unusual Santa Fe tall gondola
14:32 some old hoppers including a DRGW one
14:46 last door on the autorack wasn't closed right
15:46 wow, SP gray unit leading that still has the SP on the front is visible
16:24 all these units were stored in Galveston . Five gensets, seven B40-8s (two in yellowbonnet colors), and a warbonnet B40-8W. I last saw B40-8s 580 and 565 in Kansas City in 2017 in active service (this was after a UP B40-8 ended up in the IRYM). 563 is in Minnesota and last worked in 2020. 570 also last worked in 2020 and wasn't in this power move either. 578 was last seen in Saginaw in December 2022, so those three still have a chance of being preserved.
17:40 two Ferromex units trailing
19:20 new units for Fort Worth and Western
20:11 CP 8781 leading through Elkhart
21:30 Strasburg 8618 heading home with an Ontario Northland boxcar to beat the incoming snowfall
22:06 rear-ended in La Grange. That pickup is too tall compared to that car and couldn't see it. Such personal vehicle heights should be illegal!
22:41 Amtrak 160 "Pepsi" leading the Coast Starlight
23:08 Sperry truck crossing the Desher diamonds on the single track line
bro lit people recognize these cameras and make stuff for this guy.
Kudos to the person writing that message in the snow at Deshler, OH at 11:35.
Missed the 'R' and had to squeeze it in, it's all good though! 2 thumbs up! 👍👍😊
I would have been tempted to install a Van Halen logo lol
🙏 R.I.P. GENSETS. 🙏 I will be Looking 👀 for them here in St. Louis most likely to be Scrapped on the Illinois Side of Downtown St. Louis. 🙏
4:33 There's been a lot of wildlife on the VR cameras; bear, deer, rabbit, fox, coyote, hawk, etc. But that's got to be the first Dragon that's shown up crossing the tracks!
Happy Year of the Rabbit!
Thanks!
Wow, you got sssssooooooooo mmmmaaaannnyyy rare trains in this one!! Reminds me I'll have to go to those places!
Awesome, B40-8’s are my absolute Favorite Loco’s, that’s why it’s sad to see the Dash-8’s and 3GS units on there way to be scrapped. Thanks for including a Plant City catch though, there’s often really neat stuff going through there
Would love to see them running somewhere. B units were a bonus to see when I was kid
@@matthewrinehart9514 awesome; unfortunately I was never able to witness that old power. Csx doesn’t own any of those units
I grew up on the c&nw Chicago to Omaha mainline so I got to see them as UP run through power and on the burlington northern just a few miles away.
seeing a 4,000hp locomotive being scrapped is sad since i feel railroads should save them for how i never grew up around them like i did with SP but wont forget get the GP9 SD9 GP40-2 SD40-2 and SW9 that had there light package still on them
19:51 "One wheel on my wagon, and I'm still rollin' along..." 🤣
Yep. And we have more folks who ride wheelies down here. This, however, is a first on the AMTRAK platform.
7:37 Dual P40s! That's a rare sight nowadays with P40s being retired and replaced, and P42s getting ready for retirement. They'll be around for a while longer if the issues with the Chargers and ALC-42s keep up.
that Warbonnet leader had good paint and was clean!
Nice colors!! 🎨🎨🎨
I found out that "Spaghetti Works" in Wichita, Kansas is an apartment complex. I thought it was a restaurant. Silly me.
Thank you for Lagrange, KY...i needed to be cheered up today.
Another great grab bag as usual. Love the V R F at the end.
Exciting seeing multiple silver bonnets elephant style
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but I never realized that Flagstaff gets that much snow. Looks beautiful though.
Flag is on its way to record snowfall this year. This follows a massive monsoon season that was much needed after a miserable three years.
I think the mesa-like elevation of Flag gets it some snowfall 🤔🤔🌨️🌨️❄️☃️❄️☃️
14:36 Missed the MoPac hopper ahead of the DRG&W. 🙂 (And, cool ending!)
@18:57 I wonder if that edge leads to killing birds?? Hi Ethan!! I will look your site up.
@22:32 Love your added sound at that rear ender!!
Bnsf needs to get serious about heritage units. I would love to see a Frisco or burlington route heritage unit.
I agree 👍👍.
BNSF heritage units look like someone waited till the last minute to do their final project for school while UP CSX and NS planned since the assignment was given.
Agreed but money talks I guess. They could do them when the have a major paint job coming..
I think that they think a little bit like their warbonnets bluebonnet executives and cascade green locos are heritage units thats what I think .
@maathewrinehart9514: And CSX also.
I miss the Blue/Yellow Santa Fe and the black/green Burlington Northern locos.
The Norfolk Southern rail train showed the rails splayed out as the train went around the curve. The rails were splayed way out at 20:54 and were back even at 21:15. Good illustration of how they move while on the train.
I still miss the Chessie System kitty.
So I've been reading the comments about the locomotives getting scrapped, a shame that they couldn't be repurposed. I miss the old navy blue and yellow ATSF units.
Hoo-Raaa for Ethan 😃👍, maybe he’ll get enuf kids interested in the Railroad to start a local club, learn more about what makes them run and keep folks in lumber, groceries and new cars, not to mention tourism 🙂
@@CSX-1836-Ethan howdy Ethan 🙂
bro BNSF 770 looks like it came right out of the paint shop
Looks like the "boingee" at La Grange already had boinged into someone him/her/they self! lol...
so glad that my local railroad saved 5 dash-8s from the torch
The auto train was 36 cars long that's amazing for a passenger train
Unusual for the Auto Train, too, as a full house is 2/16/34. I guess there has to be a little 52 Pickup occasionally.
I counted 46 cars (16/30) plus two locos.
@@alanjanos652 2/16/30 is more usual. Over the holiday they had a few 2/16/34 and some 2/16/28. Very occasionally they’ll have three engines on.
I had no idea that some B40-8s and B40-8W's still existed on BNSF! I thought the B40-8 standard cabs were all gone by now! The Providence and Worcester received three of the B40-8W's in 2010 or 2011 and I knew that those locos were being sold to some railroads. Those wide cab B40-8W's have for the last decade been used for local service, and BNSF sees little use for them now in this era of PSR. Also, hard to believe that the railroads are getting rid of their Genset locos, but they seem to be inefficient. Hopefully though, BNSF still keeps some ex-Santa Fe power on their roster for years to come!
Love LaGrange!
Great catch😮 virtual railfan
Excellent
🎉🌿🇮🇳🌿🎉
Magnifique cette vidéo. Merci de nous faire vivre cela
Oui, c'est vrai!!
Whoa 😮should be in museums.
Nice to see how the person at Deshler wrote out that message in the snow at the end of the grab bag. Just for future reference, make sure you space out all the lettering when writing it. I noticed you forgot the R but it's all good. Still nice work and braving it out I need the cold 🥶❄️❄️🥶👍👍.
Yes, THANKS!! ❄️☃️❄️🌨️☃️
15:49 I dedicate my like to UP 6310 & the SP speed lettering she still wears.
Not only that but seeing the ditch lights flash as it passed by was a treat as well. At least for me it was because I'm from PA and I mainly see NS, CSX, and Amtrak locomotives flash their ditch lights when approaching railroad crossings.
6310 still dodging the paint booth
@@parailfan Yeah, I was a little confused by the flashing ditch lights on 6310. I dont recall UP or SP having that feature on their locomotives.
@@drubarlow Actually it was SP that had that feature. I know this because I found some videos on UA-cam where SP AC4400CWs before they got patched by UP were flashing their ditch lights for crossings.
I don't know how a company can justify scraping product when there are so many smaller local lines they could just give them to. But that is what we live in, a throw away society.
19:50 Unicycle with training wheel.
Hello Ethan! Greetings from railfans in Northern Oklahoma. Keep on Trainin'.
Cool
Sad seeing old classic ATSFs headed for scrap.
😭
Great video, well filmed.👍🎥👍👍👍😊
Saw tooth pattern also good for filleting birds on the wing !
Keep it going
0:48 “Caution Hy-Rail Vehicles Lift Frog”
The Gensets did not last a quarter of the time of some early EMD units. great video work. Thank you.
Bad design. No tractive effort and too small of prime movers.
4:35 👀🤔😄
watching videos of trains hitting vehicles at crossings a question occured to me that i've never had before ... is there a way to contact the rail dispatcher for whatever line you're at to tell them that something is tuck at the crossing?
Was that a Happy New Years parade in Flagstaff? I could not completly see it. Amtrak has its own freight train too. BNSF everywhere. Plus a showing of a duel team of fort worth engines. Fun ending! Thanks
The car that got hit at La Grange looks like it already had a problem with its hood.
Virtual Railfan I haven't watched any of your videos in 80 years and now it's 2023 I know what you been doing open up new big grab bags.
Must have gotten to watch steam in revenue service then. Virtual Railfan is pretty old too!
*Awesome*
Looks like BNSF is reusing a lot of there locomotives from the 90s especially Burlington Northern and one day ima go to Barstow and find the camera LIVE
16:00 Surprised this wasn’t captioned - final westbound fueling stop for #1 Sunset Limited, with #2 making its final Tucson fueling stop this morning. Sad times for us Tucsonans. No more fifty minute hangouts at that cam. No more Banana Boat, Sunshine, and uh…the other one.
wow! 90230 is still running
3:00 - That chubby fellow with the beard looks like me. Poor guy.
Chubby is loving, chubby is 👍 GOOD!! 🥰☃️
Amtrak... we don't need no stinkin' baggage car!!!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍀
It's always funny to see how uneven the tracks are laid in the USA. Shameful for an economically leading country
Those Locomotives Are Going To Get Scarped In 16:52 ?
There was a derailment at tehachapi over the weekend a couple of container cars and a couple of tankers went down
Those bnsf scrap locomotives have been stored in Galveston at the port . Probably another 75-100 still waiting to be hauled out .
right but where r they going...
Who knows maybe the gensets will survive on a industrial railway like a steel mill or factory
Were those wind turbine fins??? HUGE!
Yep!
So rare to see a Amtrak dash 8 leading
I see the shots from Hisperia and just expect to see a coyote chasing a road runner.
You mean "scrapping", not "scraping". Scraping would occur if there was insufficient side clearance or an over-width load on an adjacent track.
OR if about to be repainted!!
I know one GE B40-8 is in a museum. It's a Union Pacific one but I can't remember the road number its at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union,, IL
The road number for the Union Pacific B40-8 is 1848, also it's an Ex-SSW B40-8 8049.
5:13 faito daiyo
12:48 I wonder where WMSR's full dome car is going?
Hopefully it is going to a railway museum
Scrap.
But seriously,
Was never owned by wmsr. Railexco owned it, and its off to Chicago to a new owner.
@@angryscooter77 oh... Thx.
Great sign Ashland.
What did they scrape?
It's "scrapping"; not "scraping."
That car that got bumped had a damaged hood also.
I noticed that too. An ideal car for an insurance scam.
1:31 where is the caterpillar bulldozer going to
Where is the ocean view going?
darn shame about the locos IF I had the money I'd of bought a few 😉
"... I would have bought..." (I'd have bought a few...) 🥰 I wish you'd had the $$ 🤑🤑! 💰💰
Can anyone explain how the continous welded rail is loaded ONTO the train? I know it is dragged off but it seems like a little more care would be needed to load it onto the cars.
They back it up to the plant and the rails are slid onto it. The rails are only fastened at the middle and rest on rollers the entire length of the train. There is a Norfolk Southern rail welding plant in Atlanta where they weld together rail to make the long lengths then load it onto NS trains.
Strangely interesting!
Why are they being scrapped? They look fine to me.
😭😭😭😭
Do anyone know how to stop at a Stop Sign RR??
What’s ocean view doing in Ohio???
"Auto Train" with with somebody waving in the 4th passerger car. Why two locomotives for the "auto train" of 41 cars and two locomotives also for the SWC #4 with only 6 cars? Is it because the route of the first is less hilly?
auto train is a Amtrak route between DC and florida where people can take their vehicles. Both have 2 engines in case of mechanical issues
I think scrapping has two 'p's. Don't you just love wise guys like me? But yes, sad to see otherwise nice machines meeting the grim reaper.
Don't apologize for correcting spelling, grammar.....if it's done politely and in a kindly way.....I LIKE being korrectted 🥰🥰
Geenset/Green Goat, Started in 2001, now Owned by RJ Corman since 2009, Gen Set the operation was shutdown in 2020. Adios...
"SCRAPING 13 GENSETS!"
For us that don't know, what's the time stamp?
I do love scraping locomotives. Hint: the word you’re looking for is scrapping.
It's amazing what can slip by when you have a fast approaching deadline, lol!
Yes, but if a loco is being repaired (saved) isn't it first scraped & repainted, not scrapped??? 🤔🤔🎨🎨
They started using those GENSETS in like 2011…….what a waste……
Scraping ≠ Scrapping. Can nobody in the USA spell anymore?
Are the FWWR New or Refurbished Units??
I believe they are former BN SD 60’s
Not sure how the perfect meet at La Plata didn’t make the cut. Hopefully it’ll be in a future grab bag
Regarding BNSF Heritage Units . Write a Letter to Warren Buffett since he Owns the BNSF Railroad. UP and NS are Onboard but BNSF and CSX are Clueless. 🤪👎
2:59 looks so empty…….
5:35 more of our tax money on its way to being destroyed. 🤷♂️
America: Ukraine’s 🏧
Gensets…. Proof that trying to help the environment is a waste of money….
Scrapping....not scraping
GENSET junk.
I counted 6 plus some B40-8s.
04:35 Looks like people in dragon costume for the Chinese New Year...?? 🥢🎉
🎎🎏🎎 😉
