We have a WW2 and WW2 boot camp just south of town. I used to go there and get 5 gallon buckets of fired bullets to melt down and recast into the bullets that I would use for my M1 Garand and M1 carbine's and 03-A3 Springfield rifle. I thought it was cool to use the bullets again for the rifles that they were originally made for. The park district made me stop because the EOD is out there digging up unexploded ordanance from the howitzers and hand grenades. Once a year they collect all the Ordanance and blow it up and you can hear it for miles. The news tells us when they do it so 911 doesn't get overloaded with calls. I want to go out there and video the target carriers and the 200 foot bunker that they used to hide behind so they didn't get shot. Great video thanks.
Target area called Butts, heard many slaps of different rounds breaking the sound barrier back in the day when we had to put em up, take em down to patch then up again
That airfield used to go out a lot further, the prison is built on the former base near the village. That was a massive place built for the raf and then used by the usaaf for repairing battle damaged b24 bombers
The range looks like a small arms range the small enclosed one looks like it may have been used for officers to be pistol trained. We had an old garrison dated back to the 1700,s in the seventies we used to play in it as a kid and the rifle range was used right up to the eighties. This range we played on had target up to 600m it was also used in the 1800s as well. It has a local heritage centre nearby that’s worth a visit. They even had a v2 engine on display. The garrison has been partly knocked down and a housing estate built on it and yes they call it the garrison estate. It’s just north of the river Purfleet heritage centre.
This is a similar facility to the one I discovered in1960's at Dunkeswell (RAF Fighter Command, then an RAF Coastal Command airfield, Navy Patrol Bomber Squadron VPB-103, Fleet Air Wing 7, ...) plenty of .45 and 38 bullets and some casings were found but the US .45's used steel cases that by now would be rusted away.
Jesus! Great find! It looks like an aircraft firing range. They had to test the guns/canons during WW2, so maybe the aircraft positioned themselves outside and fired into the sand, which, Chris you are right would have half-filled the whole space where you pointed out that diagonal line.
The last building would be for harmonising the guns on the fighter aircraft. They would support the tail and fire the guns to get a cone of rounds at a certain distance
Nice ranges, the buildings look to be in good condition. The room with the blue paint would have been a small arms store, with the rifles held on numbered hooks. The light switch would have been an intrinsically safe type.
It’s a 25 m range and you can shoot full bore and pistols. I think the wood at the bottom of the butts retains the sand or bullet catcher. The covered area is the 25 m firing point and you could move closer to shoot at 15 or 10 m which would be marked off.
Enclosed pistol or aircraft gun range with steel baffle plate on the rear wall, tiled with top out and bottom in to send ricocheted bullets into the ground. And the damage to the concrete is called "Bullet/projectile spalling".
I'm pretty sure it's an aircraft gun harmonizing range called a butt they were used to get the guns to converge at a certain distance ie 100 yards all rounds would high the same spot ish these were usually outdoors though
The latter part of the video shows shrapnel damage and impact from something with high explosives in it, I think. Perhaps a light anti tank weapon? The hole on the roof looks like an impact from outside, like a shell or rocket strike...
Pistol and SMG Range, too small for rifles. And the complete unit is a cartridge which consists of brass case, propellant, primer and projectile (Bullet). 😎
At RAF Swinderby I used a short range for SLR. It wasn't so much target practice but to be introduced the the weapon. Nit saying your wrong in this instance but short ranges were used for other things than side arms.
Fun rehashing a IKS Video is seeing them tromp through the woods finding History's Secret Golden Gems!!!; )

Cheers Guys good watch we used to fire the old SLR on a 25yd range at RAF Swinderby when it was school of recruit training.
Almost 100k subs and a deserved you tube silver award , wow Bullets from ww2
Sound's like a metal detector needed. chaps keep safe love the vids
Ya even a pinpointer would have been perfect for the task.
Feels good to get out of quarantine and explore some bunkers!
9:56 Graffiti with the name Flt Lt Pocock. He was a man who'd rose right up through the ranks to the top. Interesting war time record.

It wasn't me writing on the wall honestly 9:43
thanks again IKS exploration always a pleasure and fun
17:20 I think is the area for testing the gun barrels. The sand is used to absorb the blast.
congratulations on your 100k subs

bullet heads = Projectiles. the bit that stays behind is the casing. when complete and together it's called a cartridge.
The angled metal in the rifle ranges is designed so that the ammunition gets angled down to the ground when it us hit...usually into sand.
That gun tho omg but doesnt beat the german mouser kar 98 fkn tasty
Mouser k98 is my favourite gun :)
IKS Exploration I want one so bad
The bunker shot to piece’s was to set and test the 50 cal guns on the planes.

Another fabulous video chaps just what’s needed with a few tinnies. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🛸🛸👍.
Another nice one lads
Chainsaw and a bobcat.....You could put that back in service. Looks like it was a pistol range or 50m.

A very cool find, did Chris manage to find any old blanks in the sand ??. Thanks for sharing. xx
Looks like where they would test fighter plane guns.
How many different projectiles did you find Ian nice work and Matt's secret Vault video's got pulled strange indeed folk's
