Study, study, study. Here's my story. At 19 years old, I wanted to go for the Air Force. I took the test and was told at my interview that my scores were below what the Air Force were looking for. I was bad at math and just took the test a year after high school. While still working, I got several study books and began studying. My supervisor helped me a lot in the math and of course, the books gave me a heads up as to the type of questions to expect. I studied for a few months and went back and took the ASVAB again. This time I scored well above average in the Navy's Battery test. I don't remember my score, it was in 1971. Back then you took a series of tests for a particular branch. Therefore, I joined the Navy. While in boot camp, I hated everything about being an average sailor on a ship. I figured I had made the mistake of my life. I wanted to do something special since I was stuck for 4 years. About half way through boot camp, a chief came into our class and said that the following recruits were invited to attend a seminar on Nuclear Submarines - those who had higher test scores. After seeing a video and speaking with several men on submarines, I was hooked. I had found my way in the Navy to be something special. After boot camp, I went to sub school and later, on to "A" school and finally got orders to an SSBN nuclear submarine. I made 6 patrols in the north Atlantic. Qualified and earned my dolphins on the second patrol. I've experienced things very few people will ever do, even in the Navy. Moral of the story: Kim is absolutely right. Your scores will determine your path in the Navy and maybe even in life.
I went in in 92. I took the test but I never had a way to study for it as there was no study book for it. I scored super high on the administrative abilities section and I was placed in supply administration and logistics clerk. it worked out perfect for me.
I want to be a Culinary Specialist, you know anyone in that position and if so would it be recommended? I love to cook and I want to make it into a career.
+FireBattalion I have not looked at ASAVAB for dummies. My personal advice is study up. Take the practice tests online. Go take the real one. If you got a score you don't like then study a lot and take it again exactly a month later.
Yoon Kim Well I did take the practice ASVAB with my recruiter and I got a 27. Then a month later I re-took it. I was doing well until I got to the arithmetic reasoning section. I didn't seem to have enough time to finish and I only answered 5 questions and I got those right but time ran out. So I got a 37 (could of gotten a mid 40 or higher if I had more time on the arithmetic section). So now I'm gonna re-take it again really soon. I have been studying quite a lot. Each day for 2-3 hours a day.
+Yoon Ho Kim Do u remember ur ASVAB score and in ur opinion is 72 a very high score I mean I study a little but half stuff on test I knew the other half did not know also I did not have the book!
It means scores from the Arithmetic Reasoning and Word knowledge added together must equal 95 or higher. With the minimum being 45 on the word knowledge.
+ryanzzification No not really. For that job I can tell its Master at arms. It means that both subtests of Arithmetic reasoning and Word knowledge have to be added together to 95 or higher say on arithmetic you get a 65 and on word knowledge you get a 48. Add those 2 scores together and it'll be 113. that's enough to get that job. Even if you scored a 50 or lower on the ASVAB
+John Prieto Yes and no. RPOC, Yeomans, Starboard watch, and anyone who has a position that requires them to wake up early can wear a watch if they have one. It all also depends on your RDC. Some RDC's don't care that you wear a watch (like mine was) and some RDC's don't want people to wear a watch. It all depends. Keep in mind you want to being a functional watch and not a flashy watch.
My Recruiter told me to focus mainly on the Math, cause even if you bomb the other sections, Math is a big chunk what qualifies you for the jobs. I scored a 66 on the ASVAB. But I was qualified for 90% of the Jobs in the Navy. Now, I'm shipping out in May. Got HM!
I scored a 75 luckily, landed me a great job if I can make it past the schooling. My mom back in the day scored a 97. I'd say the average is around 40's

Hey I have the ASVAB for Dummies 2015/2016 book and I wanted to know if the ASVAB was similar to it, the math?
+FireBattalion I have not looked at ASAVAB for dummies. My personal advice is study up. Take the practice tests online. Go take the real one. If you got a score you don't like then study a lot and take it again exactly a month later.

Hey can you explain what this means WK+AR=100(minimum of 45 on WK)
+ryanzzification Not a clue. Ask your recruiters or people at MEPS.
It means scores from the Arithmetic Reasoning and Word knowledge added together must equal 95 or higher. With the minimum being 45 on the word knowledge.
+FireBattalion so pretty much I have to score a 95 on my asvab ?
+ryanzzification No not really. For that job I can tell its Master at arms. It means that both subtests of Arithmetic reasoning and Word knowledge have to be added together to 95 or higher

+FireBattalion thanks man you really helped me out
Hey Yoon, You said that it's good to have a watch at Basic, but my recruiters said that unless you're RPOC you don't get to use a watch, is that true?
+John Prieto Yes and no. RPOC, Yeomans, Starboard watch, and anyone who has a position that requires them to wake up early can wear a watch if they have one. It all also depends on your RDC. Some RDC's don't care that you wear a watch (like mine was) and some RDC's don't want people to wear a watch. It all depends. Keep in mind you want to being a functional watch and not a flashy watch.
+Yoon Kim Okay, thank you! Yesterday I went a bought a G-Shock and hopefully they let me take it to Basic. Thank you for the reply!
hey I have a question, after boot camp do you get to ho home? or straight to A School?
+Linda Bahena You go to A school.
So you don't get to visit your family?
So I got a 97... You mean I'm 2 points from getting it? Noooooooo
Got HM!

I scored a 66. I'm a Navy Corpsman.
can you renew your contract after 4 years?
+Rovie Torres As long as you have a 4 year contract you can reenlist after 4 years.
What did u score on your ASVABs??
+Julian Garcia I think if I remember correctly around 70
+Yoon Kim dayuuuummm
I scored a 75 luckily, landed me a great job if I can make it past the schooling.
My mom back in the day scored a 97.
I'd say the average is around 40's
